All Jennifer Jason Leigh, all the time on jjlchannel & jjlchannel2.
I watched this on Showtime back in 1986 when cable tv was brand new, was great then , its great now
plcnic is truly a great play
Whenever I read or see an Inge play, the word that comes to mind is ... longing. For purpose, love, identity, respect, kindness, attention, youth ... you name it. A surprisingly touching and well-acted production ("surprisingly" because cable quality was not always great). Thanks for uploading a rare find!
this is been a great story, lots of famous actors and actresses
Delighted to find an Inge play. Thank you, jjlchannel2.
Just found this excellent version. The film version had William Holden in the lead. Though a great actor, he was too old for the part. Harrison was perfect. The play makes more sense with this casting. Thanks for uploading.
Madge's sister... the girl from European Vacation. Left us too soon. Passed away at age 32 from a stroke (complications from diabetes). I think she won an award for this act, though. May she RIP.
Dana Hill was the standout as the little sister, and won the L.A. Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Featured Actress in 1986
I cannot ever tell you what your posting this means to me. I saw this version as child, and it moved me so.
For many years, I wanted to find it. I searched everywhere, asking for the version of "Picnic" with Rue and Jennifer Jason Leigh. Thank you soo very much. I am crying now. So moving. So moving.
I saw this at 16 and it has never left my consciousness. I was engrossed in the whole production.
I feel you, David. And it was just something about Rue McCluahan (misspell on that last name)
Me too
i really am developing an appreciation for Jennifer Jason Leigh as an actress!!
Have you seen her in "Washington Square"? Dont miss this, she is spectacular!
Yes,and Flesh+Blood is a great one@@averayugen7802
I have commented before on this...
THANK You soo much for posting this. For years, I have looked EVERYWHERE to find this one w/Jennifer Leigh in it. I watched it as a little girl and just wept. I wonder how I knew (at that age) what the plot really was~
My mom just passed-dementia :( This movie makes me think of my childhood w/my mom
It is Thanksgiving, and I am going to watch Picnic...
This whole cast showed awesome chops/outside of what we see them in/ Rue playing the patient, tired mom and Dana Hill the smart, snarky kid sister....they ALL killed it in this play!
Picnic is my favorite play
What a treasure! I remember loving this play when I saw in my teens. Thank you for preserving this gem.
OMG. IVE LOOKED FOR THIS FOREVER, ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I so love this. Young love at it's finest. Jennifer is so beautiful !!! Gregory Harrison is so handsome. Everybody looks great. Love it 4 stars !!!
I have been looking for this forever. I saw this when I as a teen girl and it her performance resonated with me. I love Jennifer. Now that I'm in my mid 40's I can watch this and remember what it felt to be young. Thanks so much for this download.
*Upload.
420FlowerPower Kim Novak and William Holden were the stars of the movie first...oh, it was steamy hot with passionate love...and besides Blanch and Libby (stars on the Golden Girls and the Waltons), this was a flop! But free to watch... Why did they feel the need to do a re-take...it didn't warrant a re-take, and really hurt the memory of the original movie/play. Blanch is Rue Mc Clanahan, may she RIP. And Olivia's name is Michael Learned aka, Libby...short for Olivia on the Walton's.. which ran from 1972-1979. Love that show almost as much as Little House on the Parairie., ran from March 30 , 1974 to 1983, nearly 10 years. Wonder if either show is available on RUclips TV? A free trial is offered constantly, but never gives a lineup.
I think Gregory Harrison is perfect as Hal and Jennifer Jason Leigh is the full embodiment of Madge. You can feel and see the chemistry when they come in close together, they absolutely sparkle. I must also say that even though I enjoyed the original movie, William Holden seemed a little too old to play Hal, but I enjoy both versions but this one resonates with me the most.
Once I was Madge and fell for a Hal a drifter passing through at a Halloween party, I danced with him all night to the dismay of friends and family.
Holden, who I love, was too old for the role. It's too bad Newman wasn't cast (he wasn't a movie star yet but played Alan on stage and then was the replacement Hal)
Barbara Mowrey Michael Learned played the mother on “The Waltons,” an excellent TV show from the 70’s. Her name was Olivia. She was affectionately called “LIVVIE” by family and friends.
A very good production of this classic. At first I was resistant to the casting, but have to admit, they won me over! I've only seen the movie - never the play. The writing really is excellent.
A fine interpretation of Picnic
Thank you so much for this! I watched this over and over on Showtime when I was about thirteen and haven't seen it since. What a treat!
Thank You. Thank You Dana Hill.
Picnic,a really good play,good acting!
Conchata Ferrell died today...sad...goodbye Mrs. Potts...RIP ❤
Jennifer Jason Leigh channels Jessica Lange in my opinion.
Nice
Jennifer Jason Leigh is great in this play
The cast in play is great
The tragic thing here is the unfulfilled potential of friendship between these two men.
Thanks so much for posting this. I've been wanting to see this version of Picnic for a while. I thought Jennifer Jason Leigh and Gregory Harrison were great! What a sad play it was really. Each of the characters had such desperation underneath. What a commentary--that people and their ambitions, what they want for themselves, youth...have an expiration date on them.
Thank goodness I found this. I'm performing Act 2 in my drama 2 class with Madge and Millie as they talk about boys etc. and this really help me get a feel on the whole situation.
Lexi Myles omgosh me too!!
Picnic has been my favorite since I was in high school, 1955. I even bought a tape to watch it whenever I had the urge to. That " Moonglow " dance I would remember it for the rest of my life ! Now I see the stage version of it being acted beautifully. It made me to realize how powerful love is in life ! What a comfort ! George Wu, ARCHITECT, A.I.A., NCARB 2018-2-27
georgewu5 its been my favorite too it has such a sweet melancholy aftertaste. I listen to "Moonglow" just about everday
@@beverlychase3587 I read that the song Moonglow was actually two songs put together. It worked out well. It's a romantic song.
Just amazing acting.
Thanks for posting. Wish I could find the movie 😌
What an amazing cast!!!
This Hal fits the description when they call him young man. In the movie, the actor playing Hal, William Holden, looks like he's 50 years old and they keep calling him young man. lol It's been years since I saw the play version. I saw it on youtube years ago. I've never seen it shown anywhere else. Thank you for posting this. New sub!
Thanks for posting this. I've been wanting to see it for a long time.
I'll dry my eyes now.
we're putting this play on at my school & i auditioned for madge!
Why is this play not available anywhere else in the world? Not on DVD VHS or streaming anywhere. This is one of my all time favorite plays.
2018 and I still love this movie.
Loved this version -- xxoo!
Oh blanche plays on golden girls play in this looks like.
7.22. love the way Bomber adjusts his 'package' when talking to Madge!
Thankyou uploader,i'd never heard of this play/ movie before now and i thoroughly enjoyed it.The whole thing played out in the back yard. All that was missing was a dog!
Yes, I noticed ...a nice 'touch" from the actor..... Make your mark- if you know you only have two scene bookending the show...
Had to watch this for an assignment, and I taught I would hate it... but dam was I wrong. Actually loved it; it's really complex if you look deeply into it. Super underrated.
Wish this version was captioned on You Tube. I have seen the original.
This was a nice movie ty
Thanks , I loved this!
Anyone else here because they’re gonna be in a production of this? Our school’s putting it on and I (a fifteen year old girl ¯\_(ツ)_/¯) am gonna be playing Howard
Damn that's rough 😔
Bel Snow lol it wasn’t that rough, I’m not a girl anymore

Thanks for posting this! I loved this when I saw it on Showtime. It's hard to find.
Wow I haven't seen this in many of moons Wow
This is a great play
This play is great 👍
I had the fortune to have dated and danced with a beautiful actress who said she was in the role of Madge on stage before. Too bad our dating did not last long enough for me to find out more about her. Anything related to "Picnic", including the photography by Howe Wong was forever beautiful in my mind as long as I live ! George Wu, ARCHITECT, AIA, NCARB 2018-2-27
What a pleasure to see Rue McClanahan with her true talent here in a part worthy of her ....beyond that stupid, witless part on Golden Girls.
Try to get hold of the video of HOGAN’S GOAT. Rue McClanahan is amazing in her one dynamic scene. The cast includes Faye Dunaway, Robert Foxworth, and George Rose.
Iv always loved that movie. The older version with Kim Novak is good too
the girl playing the little sister is the best part. Hahaha
Dana Hill. She died far too young :(
Yeah too sad she passed
She had some of the funniest lines!
In real life, I have a feeling, neither of these guys is any danger to Madge. They can barely keep their hands off each other. Of course, that could be a "directorial choice."
yes! seemed very gayish to me.but the film version slightly hinted at that with the sappy girlish praises and attention paid to the queen of newalah and her hair in the moonlight. they fought not about the stolen car. but by Madge interfering with his lust for the older jock roommate
one thing I like about this play despite of the time period sexism regarding mage and milie, which i feel like the play does comments on in a way. Is that it shows a man being open with a women compared to how Alan treated mage like a living doll rather than a person.
I find it hard to believe that Millie would wear trousers to school! That was not done in the 1950s. I got into trouble when a few of my friends and I wore trousers in the late 1960s to school.
Wow. Is this a stage play? Not bad!!!
rip Dana Hill 👑
I got my copy on ioffer. Unfortunately there is not much of a dvd market for plays shot for TV. Very good acting all around in this one.
That is for certain, BTW? JJL is the best actress I ever worked with in Canada... and it seems like yesterday, yet if was back in 1994. best regards from New Zealand Cathy
I thought that other lady was Micheal learner? from the Walton's??
Hey! I saw this performed live for Florida State Thespians :D
A rare and unexpected find. And what a pleasure it is to ogle Gregory Harrison's bare chest.
Wow!!!!...
Thank you, interesting. Do Watch the Holden version, much stronger and more convincing.
There was lots of good tv in those days. Better than all the garbage on tv today.
She's my favorite actress just about
It is 20 minutes into this movie and I am going down with a heart attack over Gregory Harrison's torso. Fatal. LOL
Contrasting this 1986 video-taped play with the 1953 film and score is a plentiful and super learning experience to study.
Study and discriminate the sets and contrasting acting styles. Film, video,
and movies are great, but personally
I really go for stage productions.
Romance, when really intense, is like 'tragic-magic'. I just love it when Agony & Ecstasy are thrown together;
True Romance that empties the mind,
destroys your heart, starves you, makes breathing a solemn labor, and makes sleep a careless bother. It gives you a euphoria that makes you lazy and limp, but suddenly, your in love with everything. I love it. I just love the way it completely destroys you. It's like a continuous drip-feed of love-heroin.
When Hal and 35:38 Madge begin dancing on that softly-lit deck along-side the river, it's like Cupid filled them both-up with arrows, two people mated to each other. After that, you can't even imagine the two of them anywhere but next to each other.
I Love it 💕.
Classic!!😘😘
Sweet.

i don't suppose very many people pay much attention
to the list of cast credits at the very end -
but something definitely seems amiss
e.g. I'm fairly certain that Jennifer Jason Leigh did NOT play the part of "Bomber"
among other discrepancies
I never noticed that - what a flub!
"Bomber" was a flub. Period.
Rue Mac was'nt even mentioned in the credits.
charles ranalli Actually, the only discrepancy among the cast list at the end was that Jennifer Jason Leigh's name was transposed to the character of Bomber, and Morgan England (who played Bomber) was listed next to the character of Madge Owens (played, of course, by Jennifer Jason Leigh).
At least we get to see who played Bomber and Irma Kronkite and Christine Schoenwalder and Olive in the credits; none of them are listed on the IMDB page for this.
Um
jennifer jason leigh is very beautiful
Heavens to William Inge! This was so very interesting & intriguing to watch! I've always loved the movie version with Bill Holden & Kim Novak (what a great cast, powerful script, memorable music and on-location Kansas photography!). As good as Bill Holden was in the role, he was a tad bit too old. But too big a box office draw to give it to anyone else...I can understand the studio's choice. I saw this performed at a local community college back in the 80's. They did a pretty good job. This is a fine production too. Being such a huge fan of Jennifer Jason Leigh I suppose I'm a bit prejudiced. And though I did like the late great Dana Hill very much (she plays the younger sister) in most of her roles, she comes across too strong & forced here. She's the weakest in the cast. But overall quite an enjoyable experience! THANK YOU very much for sharing it with us! The late Bill Inge was one powerful writer! :-)
I thought William Holden was maybe too old for the part too, but I think that's to his advantage as it makes Madge seem like his last chance. You can feel his sense of urgency that time is running out for him to make his mark on the world/
You flatter me, but I think it's more the case that as I get older, I empathize with other peoples' need to make their way in the world. I always thought it would be a little rough at first for Madge and Hal, but I'm a sentimentalist, and always thought they would make it.
sueluvu Well said.
Thanks very much, farswept ! Your kind words have made my day & my week ! CHEERS !!
Dana Hill is dead???!!!!!
This play should be on dvd or blu ray
Nothing beats the movie. In the dance scene in the movie Madge's eyes never leave Hal's face from the time she starts clapping. It was very seductive. (Go Kim Novak!) It made all the difference as you could sense the real connection between the two from then on out. Not feeling it here....
I agree that scene is what earns it the title of "sexiest movie of the 50s"
Nada se compara à primeira versão com Kim Novak e William Holden.
That businessman had the "smoothest" accent.
When ever I hear a train comin into town ....it means work....allot of work
Not sure why but the credits at the end of this Showtime production of “Picnic” by Wm. Inge are both inaccurate and incomplete. For instance Rue McClanahan isn’t credited at all and Jennifer Jason Leigh is credited as Bomber the rowdy paperboy instead of as Madge Owens the lead love interest. There are also other inaccuracies, it’s difficult to believe Showtime would have gotten these credits wrong, perhaps it occurred by whoever pirated the video.
Michael learner of the waltons did a great job its a different performance different from what she was playing mama on the waltons she did the best job in this play the young girl is over the top Gregory Harrison is a great actor any way so underrated the rest of the cast did good performances good play not into plays but I enjoy this one
it's always a great piece of art, but the William Holden and Kim Novak version is better.
Why is there an intermission?
@@peanutsmom5279 there probably was an intermission when it ran as a play, and I guess the producer & director felt the TV audience also
needed a break halfway through! This was made for cable TV back then, and I wouldn't be surprised if it was shown without commercials. I remember seeing it then, and I think there were none, but I'm not sure.
You can't beat the original. This isn't the original.
Oh...boy....I'm waiting for the "marry me, Howard" scene. pleeease!
I thought this was the 1956 Movie, apparently they blocked it!
Hmmm... I guess the credits were not proofread. It says Bomber was played by Jennifer Jason Leigh and Madge by Morgan England. And Rue McClanahan, as Flo Owens, is not listed at all.
So much better than the movie.
William Inge has a talent for infusing such pathos into his plays that it’s almost too much, it’s so powerful!
The men were pretty good, Van Patten a bit more so, but the women! Wow! They all did very well. Rue Maclennahan was great, and Jennifer Jason Leigh did a wonderful job and they made her look so glamorous and pretty.
And Millie (name of the actress ?) was excellent!
But the real star was the director! He knew just how squeeze every last drop of emotional power out of the script! His stage business, his blocking, timing and pacing, the rhythm, everything was just SPOT ON!
I’ve seen many plays here on RUclips and it is usually the directors that fail, but this guy was fantastic!
I saw The Rainmaker, with Tommy Lee Jones, who did great, but John Frankenheimer didn’t handle it well. It was a bit slow and blocky, not a smooth rhythm to it, and other problems. But here, I can’t find any faults!
Bigtime bravos to this director.
There’s NOTHING sexier than a man who can dance.
I can't get over how much young Gregory Harrison looks like Henry Cavill from Man of Steel and Man from UNCLE.
Nothing like the original
I'm enjoying this, but they are acting like they're all in a high school play.
Two key miscastings: the still dewy, soft voiced and mannered Michael Learned nowhere near projects the loud, raucus, aggressive, scrawny old maid desperation of Rosalind Russell in the film; and Dana Hill as Millie looks and acts a raucus tomboy of twelve, nowhere near the high school senior, college scholarship winning maturer, intellectual, sensitive teen girl that Susan Strasberg portrayed so beautifully.
JudgeJulieLit Yes. Miss Learned, its kinda embarrassing.
yeah but Dana Hill's voice was hilarious! like a female Gilbert Godfried!
I like when Madge was dancing with another boyfriend in the middle of the night and he gives Awkward Kissers at her. Before he had an Unforgettable advice.
❤
Gregory Harrison is much more believable than William Holden. Bill was just too old. I still love the movie and this production too. Jennifer Jason Leigh is good as always.
i agree i also felt that the movie was a bit choppy in places.
Rue McClanahan and Michael Learned should have switched parts.
Agree
Are the dialogues exactly as 1955...? It seems so...
Uhmmmmm! Tho I was in love with William Holden, back in 1956, Gregg did a far better job as Hal. Neat play!!!!!
you should Sebastian stan play him he did a great job as well
better then the movie
Madge Is Always The Pretty One... 😁😎
