I just simply believe in what Geri says about her departure - there were MULTIPLE reasons. Geri was being destroyed and overhelmed on many sides. And I can see these reasons. She was burned out, exausted, not so independent since she couldn't even do cancer interview. The band became her prison and did not gave her any of free time. She was propably afraid of dancing and constant singing live - losing her voice from touring live (which can be heard in interviews from that period). Bulimia, depression, complicated relationship with difficult person as Mel B in much more homophobic times than nowdays. And propably she felt cheated by Mel B with a guy (leaving the band on her birthday is a clue). Except that Mel B was attacking Geri and harassed her mentally, which is evident in some 1998 interviews (quote: "we have 4 trained dancers here" or "shut up now" and other examples... I can't even imagine what was going on behind the scenes). And maybe the other girls didn't support Ginger that much as they could (I remember Victoria was so busy with being in love and angaged). Maybe they also stressed Geri and teased her to some extent - she was the only one who has the issues with her voice due to constant live singing on 98 tour. Lip syncing shows was the most common thing in Spice Girls career so they finnaly decided to prove the world that they could sing... Beside that, Geri was the most controversial one in the media - the press was very nasty and ruthless back then, especially when her naked pictures leaked out... All of that might have made the other girls angry (Mel C was always the most worried about the press and singing quality). But still the other 4 girls grew stronger and got more valued than ever... and Geri fell in the opposite direction. Mel B was the the first one among of the girls who slowly began to mention about solo stuff... That's all (and most likely even more) why Geri felt "not needed anymore" - as she said many times. Maybe Geri had solo attempts in her mind somewhere as well, but I don't believe it was the priority with so many problems and such mental/phisical tiredness. She lacked "Girl Power" (so she left the band to avoid being a hypocrite), and some may call this an ultimate "girl power move". I think Ginger Spice just initiated that what was going to happen ANYWAY -- 2 girls became pregnant few days after she quit, so 2 weddings in preparation, and at least one of the girls announced solo. Spice Girls were destined to split in 1988 - this or that way. Perhaps Geri's sudden/dramatic departure made them even more iconic. p.s. Although, it's still a big grief that they didn't finish the world tour as 5 pieces : (
They did have a reunion tour as 5, around 10 years ago. Update: It was 15 years ago - In 2007. It was that far back that a friend even forgot she saw them then. But they did it. All 5. And it was nice that each one sang some solo singles as well !

Omg same . I was heary broken. I continued to walk through their journey as four but it wasn't the same. They all gave us different pieces of spice girls and that made the band.
She turned to her teen crush George Michael to help her. By then she didn't care that he was gay. I think it was at his house she was hiding out. Mel B was a bully in the band. Geri wasn't as talented at singing or dancing as the others but she worked harder often staying longer in rehearsals to compensate. Plus she came up with most of the ideas. She was the mother of the band when they first formed and the only one with a car and who could drive so drove the others around. Emma Bunton was the last to join as she replaced someone else who left the band before they found success. Geri felt very protective towards Emma as she was only 20 at the time & Geri was 25. I read her autobiography. She was holding down several jobs in the few years before joining the Spice Girls and going to college at the same time. She would fly to Turkey and back every week to appear on a game show there. She spent a short time on a psychiatric ward over the Christmas period after the first year the Spice Girls found success.
You know. Geri was and still is and will always be my favourite Spice Girls and I blamed Mel B for Geri leaving and that it was her fault. The Spice Girls really weren't the same without Geri. I was depressed when I heard the news that she walked out on the Spice Girls. Maybe being a Spice Girl and the fame that it gave her, and the loss of her father got too much for her. Geri put everything into the Spice Girls. Geri is a special woman.

Geri said in her book she left the band because they didn't give her a permission to talk about cancer. I always thought it was a weak explanation. What those teenagers and kids need to know about cancer? I understand why she lied. In the 90's lesbian relationships could be the end of the career. The band fell into pieces soon, so they were not that strong. "Forever" i actually a good r&b pop album.

Geri should have stuck it out until the tour was over. Then she could have left and done her solo thing. Ginger was my favorite, and she was many peoples' favorite. It was very disappointing for the people going to the concerts to not have their favorite member there anymore.

With Geri it was the latter. Far better for them to leave than be found dead from an overdose. That's how Richey Edwards of the Manic Street Preachers ended up disappearing. The band couldn't handle him not being in the band though they did give him carte blanche to leave at one point.

🌟The Spice Girls were and are the female Beatles. They stand the test of time and do amazing whenever they want to return. The 2019 tour sold even more than they did in the 90s. When you look at the crowd it's mainly 30 year olds to fans in their 60s which is awesome but then again they gained new fans, older fans and fans like me who grew up listening to them who are now in the age range of 30 to 40 years old. Parents who love them passed them on with their children and now bond with them. So once again to our parents who love the Beatles and may have said like my dad oh well kids made them popular.. No it's not just kids who made them rich, famous and popular. It's all different ages and types of people who love and support them just like how The Beatles had tons of kids and adults making them the #1 all male group, it's the same with how The Spice Girls are the #1 all female group. They need to stop being a guilty pleasures type of group to people who have them as that so they can be within the top of everyone's favorite bands they show everyone so that they are taken even more seriously in the world because they are absolutely HUGE and are very popular. They are AWESOME! Please put out a new album of all new songs and please put out all unreleased songs. They're not the female Beatles. I'm not a huge Beatles fan but there's no denying their innovation, talent and influence on other respected artists. Their legacy will never be matched, the Spice Girls aren't on the same level in my opinion.

We would not have Adele, Britney Spears & Lady Gaga and the girl groups after them as just a small example. Adele is obsessed with them to this day and Britney first started put in a girl group after Spice Girls Revolutionized Pop rock again during the grunge, rap, alternative, hip-hop era. They brought the music back with tons of flavor and fun. 🌟They are talented and wrote their songs, did choreography really great and each songs in their own special way that compliments the entire group and songs on the album. They were and are the best girl group of all time with the best songs and they have 9 or more #1 hits of you count the b sides on two of those I would say 11 but it is definitely 9 #1 hits. its so sad that they haven't released anything new since Headlines (friendship never ends) which so unfortunately was released independently. They really are the ABBA of our time. Only without as many studio albums, ABBA has 9 . As a full band now Spice Girls semi reunited, well unofficial reunited but soon to be 2023!! right Posh (my favourite member)!!! Spice Girls only have 2. One not as the full band and the non album single headlines. Two albums and one song, ABBA has 9 albums, it's a little disappointing I really wish headlines came out on a full new album. Take That couldn't have dreamed nor fathomed the possible idea of putting Headlines by itself on a greatest hits album, in that sense its almost a disgrace.

Yeah, you know everything ins & outs, as if you were there when Geri left the Spice Girls. Even the other four (Sporty, Posh, Scary & Baby) never said that Ginger's departure was because of the solo career). Geri did want to be famous since she was a kid & in her late teen, she received so many rejections in the showbiz. She didn't know which direction she would be heading until she found the other four in her life.
Really the reason was her relationship with Mel B fell apart and Mel B was mean to her and hooked up in front of her with Jimmy. It broke Geris heart and then there was exhaustion, eating disorders, stress...She released her solo album a year after leaving though, not a few months and Victoria and Mel B were pregnant anyway, so Spice Girls in spring 1998 were falling apart anyway. If anything she was the least hypocrite. She actually left when she was unhappy. The other carried on and pretended to still want to do a third album and be best friends when we know Mel C hated being a Spice Girls post 1998 and only wanted her solo career as well and did not even record Forever with the others as she couldnt stand it.

I remember a regular at the the gym who had a crush on Geri. He would buy the pop magazines for photos of the Spice Girls. Then nearly two years later it was my turn to have a crush only it was on the Manic Street Preachers but I would only buy the NME. I felt too embarassed to buy men's style magazines for photos and articles of them because they were aimed at me. Thank goodness for the internet which I was using in cyber cafes; at first once a week and then going up to almost every day at the time. So I searched for them online.

As a young Man she was my Favorite.....she had that Mature but Sexy Look...like a Woman you know...Not a "Girl". We Recognized that Sporty Spice (Mel C ) was by Far the Best Singer. Most Guys liked Posh. I didnt buy the Album, but not all of their Songs are Bad. I had a SG Poster on My Wall with Drawn Devil Horns on their Heads. :) But as almost all Men i liked how they Looked and the Attitude right Back then. Compared to the Music today they Made Solid Pop Smash Hits. So. ....Long live the Spice Girls and their Fun Loving Approach to the World.
Most of my male friends at the time had a favourite Spice girl who they had a crush on. I saw them live on a makeshift stage near the City Hall in Cardiff just as they were getting famous but I vaguely knew who they were as there were several girl singing groups in the charts at the time. It was at the Big Weekend in the summer and I was passing by and had planned to see the rock bands later in the evening. My friends envied me. By the late autumn they were playing arenas with a proper stage show.

In the Spiceworld Tour 2019, only 4 Spice Girls agreed to do the reunion. When Geri left in 1998, Emma, the Melanies & Victoria had no choice to continue the unfinished The American Spiceworld Tour. But in 2019, all five of them had the choice & VB wasn't around. The Spice Girls without Geri was really sad, but Spice Girls without VB, was a blessing, at least before the pandemic.

She and Baby were always the most popular and she was the loud one saying Girl Power plus wrote great lyrics which is why Forever was missing a lot of Spice. Anyway I feel bad for her weight gain die to her father's death but she put in the work as a solo artist to be skinny and not for the Spice Girls. Mel C put in little effort into Forever and all effort into her solo album so she's not my favorite member neither. We are all owed all of the spice girls projects and unreleased songs when Geri left. That will repair things for many of us who were there and extremely hurt by it all. So far they released one and there is said to be about 100 unreleased songs. Please get them out!!! ❤

I've seen comments about Geri being "selfish" and whatever, I see that pattern all the time when people discuss celebrities and their personal choices, it's always them being selfish and yet, the fanbase ask for an endless stream of entertainment, as if people are expecting them to never ever get tired or even break. I just simply believe in what Geri says about her departure - there were MULTIPLE reasons. Geri was being destroyed and overhelmed on many sides. And I can see these reasons.
She was burned out, exausted, not so independent since she couldn't even do cancer interview. The band became her prison and did not gave her any of free time. She was propably afraid of dancing and constant singing live - losing her voice from touring live (which can be heard in interviews from that period). Bulimia, depression, complicated relationship with difficult person as Mel B in much more homophobic times than nowdays. And propably she felt cheated by Mel B with a guy (leaving the band on her birthday is a clue). Except that Mel B was attacking Geri and harassed her mentally, which is evident in some 1998 interviews (quote: "we have 4 trained dancers here" or "shut up now" and other examples... I can't even imagine what was going on behind the scenes). And maybe the other girls didn't support Ginger that much as they could (I remember Victoria was so busy with being in love and angaged). Maybe they also stressed Geri and teased her to some extent - she was the only one who has the issues with her voice due to constant live singing on 98 tour. Lip syncing shows was the most common thing in Spice Girls career so they finnaly decided to prove the world that they could sing... Beside that, Geri was the most controversial one in the media - the press was very nasty and ruthless back then, especially when her naked pictures leaked out... All of that might have made the other girls angry (Mel C was always the most worried about the press and singing quality). But still the other 4 girls grew stronger and got more valued than ever... and Geri fell in the opposite direction. Mel B was the the first one among of the girls who slowly began to mention about solo stuff...
That's all (and most likely even more) why Geri felt "not needed anymore" - as she said many times. Maybe Geri had solo attempts in her mind somewhere as well, but I don't believe it was the priority with so many problems and such mental/phisical tiredness. She lacked "Girl Power" (so she left the band to avoid being a hypocrite), and some may call this an ultimate "girl power move".
I think Ginger Spice just initiated that what was going to happen ANYWAY -- 2 girls became pregnant few days after she quit, so 2 weddings in preparation, and at least one of the girls announced solo. Spice Girls were destined to split in 1988 - this or that way. Perhaps Geri's sudden/dramatic departure made them even more iconic.
p.s. Although, it's still a big grief that they didn't finish the world tour as 5 pieces : (

They did have a reunion tour as 5, around 10 years ago. Update: It was 15 years ago - In 2007. It was that far back that a friend even forgot she saw them then. But they did it. All 5. And it was nice that each one sang some solo singles as well !

The suceeding singles were even better like Chico Latino and The one with the Aliens. Because Look At Me is not timeless. Listening to it now, its just cheesy.

Omg same . I was heary broken. I continued to walk through their journey as four but it wasn't the same. They all gave us different pieces of spice girls and that made the band.
She turned to her teen crush George Michael to help her. By then she didn't care that he was gay. I think it was at his house she was hiding out. Mel B was a bully in the band. Geri wasn't as talented at singing or dancing as the others but she worked harder often staying longer in rehearsals to compensate. Plus she came up with most of the ideas. She was the mother of the band when they first formed and the only one with a car and who could drive so drove the others around. Emma Bunton was the last to join as she replaced someone else who left the band before they found success. Geri felt very protective towards Emma as she was only 20 at the time & Geri was 25.
I read her autobiography. She was holding down several jobs in the few years before joining the Spice Girls and going to college at the same time. She would fly to Turkey and back every week to appear on a game show there. She spent a short time on a psychiatric ward over the Christmas period after the first year the Spice Girls found success.
You know. Geri was and still is and will always be my favourite Spice Girls and I blamed Mel B for Geri leaving and that it was her fault. The Spice Girls really weren't the same without Geri. I was depressed when I heard the news that she walked out on the Spice Girls. Maybe being a Spice Girl and the fame that it gave her, and the loss of her father got too much for her. Geri put everything into the Spice Girls. Geri is a special woman.

The band fell into pieces soon, so they were not that strong. "Forever" i actually a good r&b pop album.

With Geri it was the latter. Far better for them to leave than be found dead from an overdose. That's how Richey Edwards of the Manic Street Preachers ended up disappearing. When you look at the crowd it's mainly 30 year olds to fans in their 60s which is awesome but then again they gained new fans, older fans and fans like me who grew up listening to them who are now in the age range of 30 to 40 years old. Parents who love them passed them on with their children and now bond with them. So once again to our parents who love the Beatles and may have said like my dad oh well kids made them popular.. No it's not just kids who made them rich, famous and popular. It's all different ages and types of people who love and support them just like how The Beatles had tons of kids and adults making them the #1 all male group, it's the same with how The Spice Girls are the #1 all female group.
They need to stop being a guilty pleasures type of group to people who have them as that so they can be within the top of everyone's favorite bands they show everyone so that they are taken even more seriously in the world because they are absolutely HUGE and are very popular. They are AWESOME! Please put out a new album of all new songs and please put out all unreleased songs. They're not the female Beatles. I'm not a huge Beatles fan but there's no denying their innovation, talent and influence on other respected artists. Their legacy will never be matched, the Spice Girls aren't on the same level in my opinion.

We would not have Adele, Britney Spears & Lady Gaga and the girl groups after them as just a small example. Adele is obsessed with them to this day and Britney first started put in a girl group after Spice Girls Revolutionized Pop rock again during the grunge, rap, alternative, hip-hop era. They brought the music back with tons of flavor and fun.

Brilliant. I am in the USA and have been a huge fan since the beginning. No other group can compare to them when it comes to their success and likability. They were and are the best girl group of all time with the best songs and they have 9 or more #1 hits of you count the b sides on two of those I would say 11 but it is definitely 9 #1 hits. Just be happy for them if you are "a fan" because you shouldn't shade them or try to hide their records that no one can ever hide since it's all confirmed in the public and online.

The truth is, solo projects are also already in their plan after the tour. They all know they will all be releasing solo albums after their US tour.
I do think they really plan to do their own thing after the concert. Also i think the last singles would be viva forever and never give up on the good times but only viva forever was released. Spice Girls only have 2. One not as the full band and the non album single headlines. Two albums and one song, ABBA has 9 albums, it's a little disappointing I really wish headlines came out on a full new album. Yeah, you know everything ins & outs, as if you were there when Geri left the Spice Girls. Even the other four (Sporty, Posh, Scary & Baby) never said that Ginger's departure was because of the solo career). Geri did want to be famous since she was a kid & in her late teen, she received so many rejections in the showbiz. She didn't know which direction she would be heading until she found the other four in her life.
Really the reason was her relationship with Mel B fell apart and Mel B was mean to her and hooked up in front of her with Jimmy. It broke Geris heart and then there was exhaustion, eating disorders, stress...She released her solo album a year after leaving though, not a few months and Victoria and Mel B were pregnant anyway, so Spice Girls in spring 1998 were falling apart anyway. If anything she was the least hypocrite. She actually left when she was unhappy. The other carried on and pretended to still want to do a third album and be best friends when we know Mel C hated being a Spice Girls post 1998 and only wanted her solo career as well and did not even record Forever with the others as she couldnt stand it.

That church is full of celebs and models and was lampooned in the sit com Rev when they borrow Rev Smallbone's church building while their church is going through refurbishments. They set up a smoothie bar and serve smoothies before the service. They eventually get kicked out by the Rev for being too evangelical.

Scary said that she had sexual relations with her, as well as British papers explaining how ginger spice is now hardcore Christian(because of husband?) and was saying that "lesbianism wasn't feminism", which was the headline I believe, after putting together a lot of the facts it makes sense that it was a religious backlash as scary has said several times that she not only had relations with ginger spice, but also that she has huge commitment issues because she doesn't believe in it the same as most people. Pair that with ginger going missing the night that she found that out...

I remember a regular at the the gym who had a crush on Geri. He would buy the pop magazines for photos of the Spice Girls. Then nearly two years later it was my turn to have a crush only it was on the Manic Street Preachers but I would only buy the NME. I felt too embarassed to buy men's style magazines for photos and articles of them because they were aimed at me. Thank goodness for the internet which I was using in cyber cafes; at first once a week and then going up to almost every day at the time. So I searched for them online.

Most of my male friends at the time had a favourite Spice girl who they had a crush on. I saw them live on a makeshift stage near the City Hall in Cardiff just as they were getting famous but I vaguely knew who they were as there were several girl singing groups in the charts at the time. It was at the Big Weekend in the summer and I was passing by and had planned to see the rock bands later in the evening. My friends envied me. By the late autumn they were playing arenas with a proper stage show.

In the Spiceworld Tour 2019, only 4 Spice Girls agreed to do the reunion. When Geri left in 1998, Emma, the Melanies & Victoria had no choice to continue the unfinished The American Spiceworld Tour. But in 2019, all five of them had the choice & VB wasn't around. The Spice Girls without Geri was really sad, but Spice Girls without VB, was a blessing, at least before the pandemic.

She and Baby were always the most popular and she was the loud one saying Girl Power plus wrote great lyrics which is why Forever was missing a lot of Spice. They ALL contribute perfectly for the group and made it a huge success. Geri hated that she wasn't getting everything her way! She became a Diana Ross! It's a group not a solo gig! Anyway I feel bad for her weight gain die to her father's death but she put in the work as a solo artist to be skinny and not for the Spice Girls. Mel C put in little effort into Forever and all effort into her solo album so she's not my favorite member neither. We are all owed all of the spice girls projects and unreleased songs when Geri left. That will repair things for many of us who were there and extremely hurt by it all. So far they released one and there is said to be about 100 unreleased songs. Please get them out!!! ❤

I've seen comments about Geri being "selfish" and whatever, I see that pattern all the time when people discuss celebrities and their personal choices, it's always them being selfish and yet, the fanbase ask for an endless stream of entertainment, as if people are expecting them to never ever get tired or even break. With that in mind, is it Geri being selfish or is it really the fans being selfish? We only know what we read and see on TV, we don't know the full story, who are we to judge?
The Real Reason . I think Geri thought she'd breakout and become a bigger solo star than The Spice Girls but she didn't have the talent to back it up. She's now back where she belongs in the best Brit girl and of all time.😅
