i gotta say i hated simmerson when i first watched sharpe but he became my favorite character after watching the scene of him and sharpe at the end of sharpes peril
Hogan was a tremendous character. Master of Spies, seeing everything for what it was, false naivety, elegant prose. Loved that it would take Simmerson an hour to realise Hogan had declined his company and hospitality in favour of washing his horse. 😆
The loss of Major Hogan really hurt the series. All of the other exploring officers we meet just seem like intelligence analysts, but Hogan brought that extra element that is he is a master spy as well.
Brian Cox had a serious health issue come up.......... that is why he left the series........ I think it was a heart problem. Hogan and all the Exploring Officers were not spies per se. They rode around collecting intelligence......... but they never infiltrated or embedded with the enemy...... their roles were more about overseeing covert missions in the field. Monroe was pretty good....... he didn't have the pitter-patter like Hogan, but he was just as devious....... and I think he was also an Engineer. In one of the episodes Monroe is seen hanging around to assess the breaching of a fort with artillery.
@@andrewsmith8729 Brian Cox is on record several times saying the reason he left (in his opinion) was the miserable working conditions and suffering 'misery' during filming. He's never mentioned anything about a problem with his heart. I think he got to the stage where he couldn't be arsed travelling to Ukraine for the filming anymore.
Girls: "I can't, I have to wash my hair." Boys: "I can't, I have to see a man about a horse." Major Hogan, the absolute legend: "I can't, I have to wash my horse's hair."
Simmerson appears in only two novels and is mentioned in a third. Michael Cochrane turned him into such a fan favorite that he got to play him in five Sharpe productions
I have two favorite simmerson scenes, the first is when he tries to blame major lennox for losing the colours and gets reemed out by welsley, "Major Lennox answered with his life as you should have done if you had any sense of honor!" The second is at the end of the last sharpe movie when sharpe calls him sir henry and he calls him richard and they shake hands
Captain Leroy was a fascinating character. On one hand he was a despicable racist, thinking that 'the lash was 'below the white man', and having had money that came from slaves. But on the other, he was quite empathetic to working class/rank and file soldiers, did right by them, proved to be a loyal and competent officer and was brave and valorous in the face of death. Really good character.
@@stevenwiederholt7000 Years ago, I saw a very good short interview with Michael Cochrane - another British actor who has played all sorts of characters, on stage and on TV or in films. I wish now I'd written down the exact wording, because he was tremendously witty. The interviewer was mentioning some of the roles Cochrane was known for, and Cochrane had a good laugh (and an honest one) and said that playing a nasty, pompous rotter who was also a complete coward was great fun, especially when those opposite him were also wonderful in their roles - Sharpe, Hogan, and of course Wellington. I saw Cochrane some years later, playing a character who was the complete opposite of Simmerson, and he was just as believable and convincing - to the point where Simmerson didn't even come to mind!
@@flyingbeaver57 "said that playing a nasty, pompous rotter who was also a complete coward was great fun" I have heard actor/actresses say that. That playing The Villain is always The Best. Same with the Hornblower books. (as always) The Books are better.
LOL! No more European swallows to deliver them, they'd all been scared away by the sounds of battle. And sad to say, Robin's minstrels are long dead by now...to great relief of many. ^_^
Bravest of the brave - Never he ran from a battle, nor overstepped his authority or misused his power. He treated women with utmost respect, and his behavior always soft and kind. A true gentleman and great skillful general. Truly British ought to have more of his like in the army.
There's a neighbour in my neck of the woods that doesn't look or sound like Simmerson, but he certainly embodies the shittery (?) of the character. I shared my observation on my/our neighbour to a few good folks whenever the topic came around to Mr. "Ahem". I mentioned that I had started playing John Tams, Over the Hills... a little too loudly every morning before I went to work. My other neighbours got the jest and laughed. A few weeks later I came to realise there's a bit of Simmerson in all of us. I stopped the early morning soundtrack selection. I think that's why the character works so very well in the series.
His full name Sir Henry " MAJOR LENNOX ANSWERED WITH HIS LIFE AS YOU SHOULD HAVE IF YOU HAD ANY SENSE OF HONOR, YOU LOST THE KINGS COLOURS, YOU DISGRACE US SIR YOU SHAMED US SIR AND YOU WILL ANSWER!" Simmerson.
Just a thought but Hogan may have been sarcastic when he said he missed the parade. And then Simmerson called for another parade, to which Hogan looked back with "God save this old fool" written all over his face.
"Well sir, I'm an entitled, pretentious, cowardly little shit who hides behind his title, lies about my victories and blames others for my overwhelming failings. That's my style sir!"

Its astonishing but in the late 90s and early 2000s I met officers that you could have swapped with Simmerson and not noticed the difference. I doubt things have changed significantly.
Sir Henry Simmerson was an officer & a Gentleman unlike that common disrespectful brute Sharpe who deserved a damn good flogging for his disobedience towards a great man like Sir Henry.
I find Sharpe and Simmerson relationship one of Father vs Son. Stubborn to the core.... As Sharpe and Simmerson seem to find respect at the end of their Journeys. As they both Survive everything..As to shake each others hands and part ways...
I saw a video entitled Sir Henry Simmerson, so naturally I commented, that's my style, sir

There's an interesting paradox to a character like Simmerson. The more you hate the character, the more you have to respect the actor.
i gotta say i hated simmerson when i first watched sharpe but he became my favorite character after watching the scene of him and sharpe at the end of sharpes peril
And also respect the writing. Love Simmerson. Brilliant character and brilliant acting!
