    My uncle was Captain of a B.C. Public Works vessel , the Walronda, with almost identical lines of Argonaut! She was powered by a pair of Gardner 5L3's. When I was around 13 or 14 she had telegraphs, and an Engineer in the E.R. I had some occasions to relieve him at that impressionable age! That's why I became an Engineer! Now retired 86, and still sailing a Challenger 32!

    Most modern boats look like an iron / ironer (in dutch 'strijkbout'). Technically advanced, but plastic all around. The Argonaut is a real boat, looks like a boat and you live on a boat. It has a soul and you fall in love with this ship.

    What a great treat to watch your videos! Thank you for sharing! 50 years ago I worked on a charter salmon fishing boat MV Marabell which would crawl up from Victoria to Alaska in the summer months. The boat was an old wooden minesweeper I believe. There were about 5-6 guest cabins on board. Your videos bring back a lot of great memories of my summer. I was 17 years old at the time!😮

      I believe later on Oakbay Marine Group, bought the MV Marabell, and they used it as a floating charter fishing outpost, It would follow the fish and was there Northern outpost. You would fly in and they had a Float with a fleet of small fishing boats. Very cool.

I met you through Leo Goolden, who I came across on RUclips the same week he visited Tally Ho, all forlorn in a field in Oregon. I grew up right where you were in Powell River. Spent a lot of time in Desolation, Toba, Jervis and to be honest ... I had no clue how beautiful the area was until I moved away to Alberta, then California where I now work. If I could figure out a way to live and work back home I would do it in a blink. However the Mill is closed and housing costs have increased well beyond the possiblility for a local resident can afford.

    Wading through the salal is always, at some point, an immersion into the West Coast experience.
    You always come away with itchy scratches, and for the first half of my life I didn't understand why. It's the dread Pacific Blackberry, which subtly entwines itself everywhere, but especially loves climbing through salal. You'd hardly notice it, if not for the scratches.

      Good question! I’ll maybe add something in on the way back - it’s pretty quick and straightforward as you clear yourself on a customs dock in any number of ports of entry. It’s rather a boring experience but I do get that question often and it’s a great idea to include on my trip south

  • @SailorDon
    @SailorDon Месяц назад

    Great video! I never realized how complex the coast of BC is. Does Argonaut II have a SSB radio? If so, is it equipped with Pactor? Is it normal for vessels in your cruising area to have SSB and Pactor?

    • @MV_Argonaut
      @MV_Argonaut  Месяц назад

      Hi Don! I am less familiar with SSB, but it might be used on larger ships? Requirements are for vessels to carry VHF radios, which have different channels assigned for different purposes - with everyone monitoring 16 as a hailing channel / emergency channel. Other designations are for commercial traffic, marinas, pleasure boaters, etc.

    • @SailorDon
      @SailorDon Месяц назад

      @@MV_Argonaut Single Side Band (SSB) a.k.a. shortwave, has a much longer range than line-of-sight VHF, e.g., thousands of miles if conditions are right. Pactor is a system that enables SSB to do data communication, albeit at a slow speed. It is good enough to transmit and receive email. It would seem that a vessel that operates out of VHF range would have SSB on board as a backup to the now widely used satellite systems.

  • @boatrat
    @boatrat Месяц назад

    First-rate travelogue. Even if I don't personally favor the super-quick-cut editing of the montage bits, I know that's the accepted modern style for this sort of thing, especially if you're attempting to limit the overall duration.
    The part I was carefully trying to pause and repeat a few times, was the segment of Tally and Argo both pitching head-on into that infamously typical short-period medium-size Salish Sea chop. Which at its worst, is well known to often be ironically much more "uncomfortable" than some of the much bigger stuff offshore. I wonder if you have some more of that footage that could be posted in a longer continuous clip without too much editing effort. Just to see the visual documentation of how a really legendary "sea boat" like Tally Ho handles it.
    I'll hope that Leo with his hard-core offshore sailing experience, will specifically comment on this issue from that day, when he posts his next installment. When he surely includes some of this footage (which the two of you are obviously swapping to some extent), perhaps that obviates you posting it redundantly. But at the least, I would be interested in your perspective on how Argo feels in those "lumpy" conditions, how often you've encountered them, your personal tolerance re. resulting sea-sickness, etc. From what I can see, Argonaut does seem to have the sort of relatively "gentle" motion that used to be a design priority in the old days. A virtue that has been lost with most modern types built for speed and/or capacity at all costs.
    Oh, I almost forgot... Leaving all these other issues aside, that whole hand-drawn-diagram bit about the tidal "rapids", the back-eddies, and Perilous PNW Passages, was more than worth the price of entry (so to speak). An Education all by itself. Outstanding summary.

    • @MV_Argonaut
      @MV_Argonaut  Месяц назад +2

      Thanks so much for the thoughtful comments! To answer some of your questions - the boats have been performing quite differently in different sea states - mostly due to the significant difference in hull sizes (48' vs. 73') so different wave periods are more comfortable on one vs. the other. I personally try to avoid any sea state at all, given the amount of rot that still exists in my port side (see the episode I put up on the Emergency Haul out I just had to perform after hitting about a 4' sea state across Juan de Fuca Straight).
      Always, when Tally Ho (or any sailboat) have their sails up, the boats stabilize quite a bit and will cut nicely through most swells. Argonaut does well head on or quartered, but is extremely rolly on a beam sea which is very uncomfortable and maybe a little dangerous. My goal is to find a way to help perform the repairs to the port side, as well as the stern stemson which is quite rotten at the moment (the starboard side doing much better after we replaced 37 planks and 20+ frames last year).
      I do have some longer footage from that day, as does Leo - let's see what he puts up in his next video.

    • @boatrat
      @boatrat Месяц назад +1

      @@MV_Argonaut
      Well, now you're onto another issue well understood by the old timers. Specifically, the use of a "steadying sail" on a short-ish mast retained for that purpose, on some workboats otherwise designed with engine-only propulsion. Anyway, we'll leave Argo to her design intent: Not offshore, and not bound to the productivity-schedule demands of fishing. Hopefully you are thus afforded the luxury of "choosing your angles" for comfort.

    • @MV_Argonaut
      @MV_Argonaut  Месяц назад
