This layout tour remaster comes from The Great Train Show in San Jose on February 26, 2017. The Great Train Show features all kinds of railroad-related memorabilia as well as several modular layouts.
Having seen The BAZ Boyz in Sacramento and Pleasanton prior to this show, it was my privilege to get a video tour of their modular layout. Several of the modules in the layout are award winners, and you will be able to see why in this video.
Come along as we take a look at the San Francisco Bay Area Z Scale "BAZ Boyz" modular layout!

I remember seeing my first Z-scale setup. I was used to HO and the next one down or so. Id never seen such a small railroad and so detailed. It was in a giant local mall and the model train store wasn't there but about a year or two. But it was wonderful.
N scale the next size down from HO then Z
@@ryans413then T after Z
Absolutely amazing, anyone who can build Z scale should win an award
What about T scale?
I agree.
I have never seen this level of detail in Z scale. Even in N scale, it is rather hard to find.
Retirement goals!
The level of detail is incredible from the mountain faces to the gator mauling a person
During the description of the scenes, I forget the scale is so small until the narrator points with his finger. It throws me off if every time the relatively enormous finger comes floating in. This type of detail makes you forget just how small Z scale really is.
Good ole Florida.
😳
This is as good as it gets, hats off to you, to have locomen on board is awesome. Its my major gripe with the larger scales that there is population at large but no passengers or train crew. Blows me away ( from a retired BRITISH RAIL train driver). I can only presume you have won lots of medals, you deserve them. Terrific.
My goodness I wouldn’t have thought that level of detail possible at that size. I felt like I was going to break those things just by looking at them.
I have a hard time with O scale anymore!
Afterthought, you really needed the HAND OF GOD toshow you every now and then what actual size / scale you were looking at. Without the giant finger and thumb, you would be hard put to it to guess what actual size it is. Superb.
Agree!
*Laughs in the third rail of O scale*
Every time his finger came into the frame, I was reminded just how tiny this is. I’m still blown away that anyone can make stuff so detailed at that teeny tiny scale.
You need to watch a gold smith set tiny stones in metal.
Awesome z scale! I Like the buildings
George
As a 32 year old I couldn't imagine scratch building Z scale. I work with N scale and that's hard enough.
22 year old here. I only have space for Z scale due to my limited living space. Im scared to even start when I see this as I am building my collection up atm. But I'm going for German inspired layout.
Yeah man makes me glad I chose O scale lol
For real. Definitely is more intimidating going for the smallest scale in the hobby. Especially considering the lack of abundance in all aspects of build.
Man, Z would do me in for sure..I did n scale for a lot of years along with Ho, but I’m 43 now, I’ve got kerataconus and a astigmatism (could be worse I guess😂), but I’m leaning a little more on Ho these days.. yeah, enjoy your vision while you have it!!!
@@bannanapancake yeah recently I moved to HO scale, I didn't realize the items I wanted really wouldn't be available in N scale. Modeling about 1913, at least in HO there are plenty of kits and steam engines.
Amazing detail!
incredible ! your use of laser cutting and 3d printing is impressive , and your group's attention to detail is amazing . WOW !
Beautiful layout! Thank you John for sharing. The detail is amazing! - Joey
Awesome to see this beautiful series of modules. Wow!
You need a bigger like button.
I'm from Venezuela, it is almost incredible, but wonderful to see this side of model train layout. You should call yourself the AVENGERS of Z Scale trains layout. You guys do miracles in making those layouts WUAOOO. Like we said in my coutry .
Wow this is fantastic! Z scale, you guys are amazing.
What a collection, immense amount of time and invention used here...incredible modelling
AWESOME, EXCELLENT and PERFECT!!!!! I enjoyed it very much!!! Amazing what can be done in Z-scale. Thank you for sharing and keep up the good work.
Just incredible! Thank you so much for posting this beatiful Z scale video! Amazing skill and workmanship!
Absolutely incredible!!! Real talent with such a small scale.
Wow so cool John! Thanks for sharing! Happy Modelling! Hans ...
Now ZED Scale is something I might actually have room for.
Wow 👌 Great job. These are some great z scale layouts!!! Thanks for Sharing ❤️
Incredible the technology and design to accomplish such a tiny layout and here I am was happy with my first HO scale set
I know a Friend that had a Nscale now Runs Z Scale and Does a Very Nice Job on his layout love when I try to wrap my head on his Layout.
Incredible work has gone into this....time and patience..wow
Simply amazing and no matter what scale. It can be amazing
VERY NICE JOHN, make me want to get into Z scale now....thanks for sharing....Jack
Very Impressive and I love your use of magnets!!!
This is just awesome! I would love to visit this place.
The layout is amazing.
Amazing! Very nice video.
Thanks for sharing this video and information
You've got climbers. Right on
Very nice Layout !
Awesome. Keep up the good work.
Z scale!!?!? Man that’s patience right there. I didn’t even know that there was even a decent selection of motive power and rolling stock. If it did man the modeled distances must be super nice
Amazing what you have accomplished. It is already difficould building in N-scale but this is mind-blowing. Thanks for showing. Greetings from the Netherlands.
Z scale never really caught on in the UK when it was introduced. Now that the technology is better it's time to try again. You can get a great Z layout into a space where OO could only fit a simple plan.
Great video. While I model N scale I really like Z scale. Thanks for sharing.
man those things are SOOOO tiny and yet look better than a lot of O scale stuff...i thought HO was as small as could make sense and look good, and MAYBE an extra N scale loop for perspective forcing. This is crazy well done
This looks interesting Finally there will Be Train shows Coming out And my Wife and I Are looking forward to going to it. Yeah!
One word "AMAZING"
This Island Earth is one of my favorite movies.
Outstanding!
Glad you like it!
Well done
Great video about layout and world building for any scale.
Glad you enjoyed it!
amazing
Brilliant love Z gauge
Great!!!!
Great video, I've subbed
: OUTSTANDING : All Aboard, may the rails be with us. 🐢 🚂 🐢 👍 🐢 😀
Killer Music. Great video.
Wow!
Z scale trains always look big in videos.
Wow didn't think those little engines could pull that much rolling stock
I agree with you on the z scale saying. if you see it buy it:)
Huge money here.
Pricey but neat.
The tiniest trains in the world.
Was that a DPU at 10:48 until 10:55 in Southern Pacific colors? I didn't know they used smaller units as such and, all the DPUs I have seen have been GEs. That doesn't mean a thing though because I'm sure I have seen it in the big EMDs like Mac70? or whatever it is called.Nice layout, it is truly an award winning place. You guys are the best at what you do and , you all are an inspiration to us all.
Those trains are cute tiney little things
This layout tour is the best I every seen
A lot of the buildings and landscapes were probably painted using a pin.
Awesome work! I struggle with details in N Scale let alone even smaller!!!
Guau una gran maqueta escala Z , sus vagones y sus maquinas los detalles de graffiti en los boxcars . Se tardaron demasiado en hacerla . Los trenes escala Z son mas chicos que el N . Cambios electricos , vias flexibles y rectas encarriladoras .
Wow - Rodger is a master craftsman! (Robert?)
I’m very impressed seeing this layout. I am in O Scale narrow gauge so it’s quite a difference.
How do you clean your rails? The smaller the scale, usually the more difficult it is to keep trains running.
Rail erasers for z scale is what I use. Marklin also makes a rail cleaner locomotive but that's only for german inspired layouts
Wow, was gunna do n scale since z seemed too small to look realistic. But man, this video proved me wrong, those locos look like they run smoothly too.
4:00 that is cool
O scale your like it’s not big until you see HO next too it. HO your like it’s not big until you see N next to it. N scale your like it’s not big until you see Z right beside it.
The Bazinga boys.
Could you guys advise what maker the ABB Sante Fe with passenger consist is? I didn't know MTL had a ATSF passenger release
in Canada, we call it ZED (Z) scale
What is the company that makes the palm trees?
How on earth do you fit a motor and a decoder in something that small??
Can you remember me the Z scale value?....is it 220:1???? many years ago I had a kit, big kit from MARKLIN from Germany , is it the same size?
I'm a Car Inspector for NYCTA. I inspect and repair the subway trains for the city. I've always wanted to get myself a small electric train set replica of either the Redbirds, R-62/62A R-142/142A R-38's any one of these would be great but the R-32/33 Redbirds are my favorite. Do you know if they make these in the Z Scale? If so where can I purchase them?
Sadly, I have not seen any subway trains available. There is very little available in Z, and when it sells out, usually it is never re-ran, so if you see it, get it, ot it will be gone.
I want to do a pacific north west 1950s logging theme in Z scale. Any advice or direction?
Whatever you do, report back to all of us when the building begins and share photographs, videos, and information.
I saw the yard
Was the freight house modeled after a prototype? If so, which one?
Despatch Junction, East Rochester NY
I'm not sure how off micro machines cars would be as far as scale but it might be something to look into lol
Sometime I get confused N From Z I am Learning The Difference Slowly Bear with me But I like My N scale.
Moar z scale please! Some of us still have to hide our sickness when the Mrs. is home
There is no way T scale could get this level of detail. Then again, I believed Z scale could never get this level of detail either.
Isn’t this smaller than n scale?
When can we play battletech on that layout?
What is the name of the German company who repaint the bulk Preiser Figures you mentioned,
HI Jason, you're probably best off just to search for it on Google, as the Baz Boyz guys probably don't check in on RUclips very often.
Trafofuchs. www.trafofuchs.de Birgit is member of our z-group here in Wuppertal (Germany). GreetZ over the pond.
I built an N-scale layout on a 2' x 4' board that I built into an eventual chest. Nobody was interested in buying it when I tried to sell it and it was pretty good, I thought, but of course nothing like that. Wow. How big is Z-scale? Half N? (which is half HO, which is half O).
N is 1:160. Z is 1:220.
Ok. But how well can you play a game of Battle tech on it? It's roughly the same scale. 1/220 for z gauge compared to the 1/285th scale for battletech. I know cgl upped it to 1/265, and no I don't care. It's still 1/285.
Never heard of Z scale. How does it compare size-wise with N and TT? (I'm old-school HO).
Thomas Ewing z scale is1:220. Nscale is 1:148 so another 50% smaller than N. N scale may range from 1:148 to 1:160 depending on what part of the world you are in
Is z turning into the new n scale? Try running 75 car trains on your ho scale railroad.
With the advent of neodymium permanent magnet motors, a lot more power can be made by tiny motors.
Please tell me where I can order the palm trees. Thanks for your time!
I'd say if you can't find them by doing a search on the internet, they're probably not available any more.
Can and do you also combine N Scale products on these layouts?
In most cases, scales are not mixed, as they are significantly different from each other.
No it’s against the law
I gonna buy Z scale trains for my collection . Engines and freight cars .
I have N scale trains .
GP38-2 Santa Fe and U36B SeaBoard Coast Line engines .
Does anyone make a Z scale starter set?
I keep hearing “no longer available “. Is this because the owner died and no longer manufactures the item or did they go bankrupt because there was insufficient demand or simply a lack of interest? I’d like to try my hand at this scale but I’m reluctant because of this seeming “lack of availability”.
Always wanted to join this group. Any more info on it?
That's all the info they provided! Are you local to the bay area?
@@tsgmultimedia Yup, San Mateo
@@YuriySklyar I think your best bet would be to go to one of the local train shows and meet these guys. They're very approachable and cool. I might be able to try to reach one of them but I'm not sure I have their contact info still.
@@tsgmultimedia I swear, all this info is top secret around here. Either that or not enough promotion...
@@YuriySklyar I don't think they're actively looking to grow the group through outreach or publicity or else they'd probably have a website. However, they're pretty easy to find at most train shows that happen in our region. I think I have seen Jeff & company at all the "The Great Train Show" events I've been to in the bay area and Sacramento and I'm sure if you talk to them and express your interest they'll be cool about it!
Wow! That scale size train is no bigger than my thumb! That's way too small a scale for my eyes, but so cool though!
Can you post a link to the palm tree supplier please.
Hey Terry, you'll probably get a quicker source by conducting a Google search. Just saying, because Jeff, Matt, and Robert don't check on the comments regularly.
@@tsgmultimedia right. So random architectural model maker in asia Google search...
They were "Samtrees" that we ordered from www.samtrees.com/ We (as a group) ordered $1000 worth of every kind of trees they offered, just to see what is available. Their Banyon and Palm trees are exquisite! I still have hundreds of them left to use on my new home layout.
