When I first saw this video I thought "yah it always works for other people" but I gave it a shot anyway, it took me literally 10 minutes and it fixed my leak, I still dont believe it. Best $10 fix ever
THANK YOU! I followed your video step by step. Problem for me was a very clogged line from the disposal to the dishwasher - right near the disposal side. I simply loosened the screw holding the line to the dishwasher and used a small snaking tool to clear it out. Ran the washer on rinse only and it drained completely! Total cost - $2.98 for the snaking tool and a bit of my time. THANKS again!
Fixed mine and have a few thoughts. Get a pick set from your favorite store which will make seal removal easy. Then get the new seal. When you install the new seal use a socket to help press the seal into place. Boom!
Nice video. I just finished and it made my life a lot easier. One addition, it was clear that you and a number of the commenters found removing the gasket the hardest part. I found that if I used your idea of using liquid detergent as a lubricant it worked well for removal, as well as installation. I poured Dawn over the grommet - rotated the grommet with my pick, so the Dawn slipped down the sides - give it ten minutes and it came right out. Also, I found vinegar helped a lot to clean up all that dishwasher detergent residue. Thanks
Another grateful viewer here! Between yours and Scottthefixitguy's video, we were able to fix this problem for around $20, including getting the right tool. We thought we were going to have to replace our six-year-old dishwasher. Luckily we found the leak early and our hard wood floor only sustained minimal damage.
Step by step, this video is guiding me thru. And all the comments are so helpful, especially "twist the thingy while pulling off the big tube" and "put a little Dawn dishsoap on the thingy and wait for 10 minutes." Hopefully I can finish it up as soon as the new part arrives today!
Thanks for posting this. This ended up being a cheap fix. In this economy, the idea that Kitchenaid/whirpool would force its customers to replace the whole sump pump is absolutely disgusting. I mean, I am doing okay, but there are so many people who can barely put food on the table.
Same problem that my Kenmore had. Video was a very informative guide. The old grommet was a pain to remove. It's a combination of rubber and steel, and you have to really pry on it to pop the old one out. Use the small pick set. You'll probably bleed some. You will be better off pulling the dishwasher out and flip it on its side to remove the motor from the underneath. After that, it was a bit easier to do.
This video helped me fixed my KitchenAid KDFE304DSS1Dishwasher, it was very smooth. My advise: read ALL the comments, there are so many warm-hearted people left their experience here, made me get job done without any issues.
Incredibly, i have the exact model shown. Same issue. Ordered for 2-day delivery, will pull seal and spring when i have parts in hand. Great video, thanks!!
Drip pants are for small leaks like the one caused by this grommet that needs to be replaced on a regular basis. I install a drip pan after this repair. It didn’t help when the hose on the recirculating pump popped a hole. I installed a GFI so maybe next time the washer shuts off. I installed a water alarm underneath and will only run a cycle if I’m home.
This was awesome and so appreciated. Took some additional plumber's tape, but the problem was solved. FYI, in researching this, I found out there is a class action suit that is in the settlement stage covering most of these dishwashers. Thanks again for taking the time to share this fix with others.
Thank you so much for the video and Amazon link! The install went perfect and the part fit as well. I saved a lot of money with not having to hiring the pro to come out! Thanks again
THANK YOU!!!! This fixed the leak on my kitchenaid dishwasher. I was considering replacing the diverter valve but thought I'd try your method first and it worked!!!
Dude your awesome. You saved me so so so much time. All fixed. I even bought extra, and put a Home Assistant Aqara Water Leak Sensor because my dishwasher is hidden on the bottom and leaks into the basement area. Thanks you so much.!!!!!!
Thanks for the video. Would never had know how to fix this. Saved me from just buying a new one. If u do this fix i recommend using the hrc brand on ebay. Little more expensive but better quality and more stringent tolerances. Thx again
Thanks for this video. Seems like this is a design flaw. I just experienced this leak with my KDTM354DSS5 installed early 2018. After diagnosing the leak source underneath, google took me straight to your video.
A few things I want to add: - When removing/reconnecting the big pipe, try to twist the bottom cap at the same time, it will make it easier - Mine still leaked a bit after replacing the seal, Ryan Calovic mentioned that he used PTFE seal tape. I did it and it stopped the leak - The new grommet does not sit flat to the slot so don't try to push it down too much - The instruction works for almost all KitchenAid, mine is kdte204ess1
Thank you for the honest video and the Amazon link. Hopefully I won't need the link. I have the extended warranty and the guy came out, told me it was because the dish washing machine was not level. He was correct it wasn't level we fixed that. I keep trying you understand how that would be the reason it's leaking from the center of the machine on the bottom. Just like yours. He's coming back tomorrow morning 6.10.2021. I'm showing him your video 🤣. Thanks again🌹
This post is amazing! Such a detailed explanation of the repair that would have cost hundreds of dollars otherwise. I was bale to make this repair in 15 minutes. Thanks so much for the information!!
Thanks a lot and I almost replace my Kitchen Aid dishwasher with a new one due to the leaking! I believe your video has the most comprehensive steps to fix the Kitchen Aid leaking problems. I order the same part from your Amazon link and it does fix the leak. But I just have one suggestion: it is easier to remove the seal with long flat nose pliers. Wish you have more viewers in the future!
Thank you so much for this video! I have the exact problem and had no idea where to start, but my first search for leaking Kitchenaid brought me to your video. I truly appreciate it.
I was about to kick my dishwasher to the curb so I'm glad I found your video! Thank you for posting this and saving so many people like myself a lot of money.
Amazing video! But use plumbers grease, the first time around my gasket was still letting a little water through, I reinstalled with a dab of plumbers grease and it was a perfect fix.
I replaced the seal and it still leaked. I ordered seals from different sellers on Amazon and they were essentially the same. I also bought some silicone plumber's grease. Replaced the seal and filled the cavity with a big blob of grease. That stopped the leak for now.
You absolutely must use silicone lubricant. Often it is sold with faucets (I bought the Moen silicone from Home Depot) or at Amazon. I installed the grommet first time without and it continued to leak. Repeated the process, but this time silicone around the diverter shaft and in the well that the grommet fits in. The silicone allows the grommet to seat deeper, and to seal against the diverter shaft. Six months later, no leaks.
please post link again. I have the exact dishwasher and problem. I was so frustrated because it was new. I was so flustered I walked away for a few years. so today I found you post THANK YOU!! I tried the link but doesn't work
The shaft is thin plastic and it will be easy to score it as you dig out the seal, so be very careful. If you do score the shaft, it won’t seal properly after that even with a new seal.
This quick fix did the trick for a few days, but started leaking again Trying out adding silicone adhesive now like what other comments I read about see if that does the trick My KitchenAid dishwasher is only 3 years old Feel this should of been a recall from the manufacture. I'll follow up if it works But if it doesn't I'll be buying a different brand
Your Amazon link no longer works. Does anyone know where to find the part. Whirlpool doesn’t sell it separately now, they make you buy the whole sump motor assembly.
my grommet comes out from the top just like yours. My KitchenAid dishwasher looks the same The issue is the instructions say that the grommet is to be installed from underneath. That is it goes right on the diverter motor. The grommet that I took out fell all apart so I don’t know what it should look like but I’m pretty certain it doesn’t look like the one in the link that you gave
OUTSTANDING Nutty Cool! You and I seem like brothers! How does it does apart? Well, putz with it and figure it out! LOL!! This is exactly the problem I'm having with our Kithenaide KTDM404EB1. Now, I wonder if I should buy the whole kit that the Appliance Repair suggested below?
Great video. Did you put that "spring thing" @9:59 mark back in the new seal/gromet? Looks like their is a space for it on the side that faces up, a second "ring" if you will the spring would seat into
Huge Thank you for putting this up! Repair guy quote me $750 to replace entire pump/motor assembly. I fixed mine for $9. There are a lot of helpful comments. Read them all! Here's my tip: My grommet was IMPOSSIBLE to get out BUT If you REMOVE THE DIVERTER MOTOR FIRST from underneath, the grommet is VERY easy to get out It's very easy to do. Turn the diswasher on its side and it's just two screws. You don't even need to disconnect it, just pull it out and you will have much easier access from the top, and then put it back in when you are done. Here is a video: on how to remove the diverter motor: ruclips.net/video/72Mc-_NS2fk/видео.html I spent 30 min trying to get the grommet out. I think I'm going to put a calendar reminder to just replace this in 2 years pre-emptively!
OK, so I have a Kitchenaid model KDTM404EBS1 which takes a diverter motor p/n W10843811. Appliance Repair and Henry's Appliance Repair suggest changing the diverter motor as well JIC there's corrosion. OK, I'll spend the $123 for the motor, but I don't want to by an entire Sump Assy to get the seal. What's the correct seal p/n? Please someone help?
Is that why mine is still leaking a little bit? Before I changed it out it was leaking a lot. I changed it and thought it was good to go, then it started leaking again a little bit. So this grease will allow it to seal?
This is the seal that I used, might want to get some silicon greese too, I used dishwasher rinse aid and had no leaks but it sounds like some sort of silicon greese is called for. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07MW463VX/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Get your tin foil hats on. The grommet seal is the most common leak problem with the dishwashers that are made with the same diverter valve. Just because it says Whirlpool, Kitchen aid, etc. It is the same dish washer design with the same basic parts. What fails is the grommet seal because people do not rinse off their dishes before putting them into the dishwasher. The small particles that are abrasive wear out the grommet. Okay, you know you are guilty but still want your leak fixed. Now you order the grommet seal, install it, and if you are lucky, it fixed the problem. Now you replaced the seal and it is still leaking. DYI peeps are not the the most competent people in repairs, but lets say they did it right. Do you have the tin foil hat on? I feel the manufacturers that make these dishwashers also sell the replacement grommet/seals. They have China producing the seals, which has a terrible history of not being able to manufacture anything to exact tolerances. If your repair failed, you will just buy another one of their poorly made dishwashers. For them it is a win-win. Sell a part and sell a dishwasher.
Nice video, great job explaining everything. I have same issue, I ordered the replacement part from eBay, still waiting though. The one I ordered looks a little thicker then the one I pulled out. The one I ordered seems a little taller, did you happen to put yours side by side to compare old to new. Was it an exact match. I saved your part information if the one I ordered don't work out. Thanks for posting such a great video
Hi, did your part solve the problem? My repl piece is taller as well, and did not come with a spring as others have mentioned. Did you put the deep-grooved side on facing down or facing up? Thanks!
@@davecashman8336 yes it did fix my issue with the leak. I'm sorry don't remember what way I put it in, I pulled out the old and put new one in the same way I pulled old one out. Hopefully it fixes your issues also.
I did this, and it’s still leaking…I’m looking through diagrams, trying to see what else could be there…it leaks out of the same area under the dishwasher as seen in the video
I replaced the grommet and it kept leaking. Finally figured out it was leaking on the outside of the grommet, instead of the inside - which is what I initially thought. I temporarily fixed the leak by wrapping the grommet with white plumbers tape (cut in half width wise) before putting it back over the diverter motor shaft. Hasn't leaked since, that was two days ago 😁👍🏻
@@khoapham1821 hey man, I haven’t created any RUclips videos, but I can explain it: basically, take about 2.5-3 feet of PTFE thread seal tape, and cut it in half length wise (a pain in the butt - it helps to have the half you’re not starting to cut at have some weight holding it down - i.e., the tension helps when cutting); take one of the halves and start tightly wrapping it around the rubber grommet. You have to kind of gauge how thick you make it, otherwise the grommet won’t fit back where it goes. Let me know if you have any other questions :)

If your repair failed, you will just buy another one of their poorly made dishwashers. For them it is a win-win. Sell a part and sell a dishwasher.
Mine as been a piece of junk since day one . I'm buying a Bosch . Done !!!!
What model is that machine
Does the flat side go down or up?
Hopefully it fixes your issues also.
nice job
I did this, and it’s still leaking…I’m looking through diagrams, trying to see what else could be there…it leaks out of the same area under the dishwasher as seen in the video
I replaced the grommet and it kept leaking. Finally figured out it was leaking on the outside of the grommet, instead of the inside - which is what I initially thought. I temporarily fixed the leak by wrapping the grommet with white plumbers tape (cut in half width wise) before putting it back over the diverter motor shaft. Hasn't leaked since, that was two days ago 😁👍🏻
@@LBizKid04 Please make a video of the process
@@khoapham1821 hey man, I haven’t created any RUclips videos, but I can explain it: basically, take about 2.5-3 feet of PTFE thread seal tape, and cut it in half length wise (a pain in the butt - it helps to have the half you’re not starting to cut at have some weight holding it down - i.e., the tension helps when cutting); take one of the halves and start tightly wrapping it around the rubber grommet. You have to kind of gauge how thick you make it, otherwise the grommet won’t fit back where it goes. Let me know if you have any other questions :)
@@LBizKid04 I followed your instruction and was able to fix mine. Thank you!
@@khoapham1821 awesome! Good job man!
