Dame Julie Andrews introducing Dame Maggie Smith and Robert Stephens to introduce Lynn Fontanne and Alfred Lunt. We'll never see the likes of this again. Nothing even close.
Theatre royalty descending upon the stage: a very young Julie Andrews, Maggie Smith and Robert Stephens presenting a special Tony to the fabulous Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne. This is a piece of theatre history for you.
Robert Stephens' divorce from his 2nd wife, Tarn Bassett, was in 1967, the very same year that Stephens and Maggie Smith were married. Maggie Smith and Robert Stephens met in 1963, when both had been invited by Laurence Olivier to be in the inaugural company of the National Theatre of London. In 1963 - when Stephens (@ 33) first met Smith (@ 29), Stephens was married to his 2nd wife and had been for about 7 years. (Seven Year Itch?!) I don't know the details of the Stephens/Smith romance, but, it seems quite evident that Stephens had a pattern, was not available and that Smith was either preyed upon or may have been trespassing or a bit of both. Who can say and it's no one else's business anyway. But, whatever the case, aren't we the lucky ones to have been alive to witness the one-and-only, Dame Maggie Smith?!
Why the hell would he cheat on her? They look so in love! But good for Maggie for finding a new man! - unfortunately he passed away, but I am glad she was able to spend a little time in paradise. It is so wonderful to hear her talking about her late husband, Beverly Cross, it always brings a smile to her face. :)
So divine divine divine to see even a glimpse of the Lunts. Gos knows how old she was and so chic and elegant, and the patch is because by then he had lost the sight in ,that eye I believe. A joy!
Thank goodness that the theater honored the Lunts. I'm so amazed by the Lunts that I don't even care that it's Julie Andrews, Robert Stephens, and the great Maggie Smith on stage ..... And I also agree that it should've been a thunderous ovation in greeting the Lunts and as they exited the stage. That was Lynn Fontanne and Alfred Lunt ... for pity's sake!!!
Robert appears to be more than a tad drunk, and more than a tad annoyed at getting second billing to Maggie. As for cheating, it happens to everybody, and I mean everybody.
@@TheTerryEthat means it was a "marriage blanc" ...he was gay and she liked girls but they came to an understanding to get married...it was good business and hardly a secret...the marriage was no doubt their best " performance"
@@nondescript2892 That is speculation. There is no evidence to prove that supposition. The Lunts never spoke or wrote of it nor did anyone else who knew them. Repeating rumors as if they are facts shows a lack of critical thinking. And class.

Oh! The Lunts! I'm dizzy at seeing these legends. They are in their late 80s and 70s and are radiant!
Oh, my god! Julie Andrews and Maggie Smith... I'm dying...
Maggie & Robert were phenomenal together in "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie"
Omg Julie Andrews and Maggie Smith?! Wow.
Such a rare treat for this Maggie Smith fan! Thank you! :)
She's the most charming and remarkable woman on earth and I can't ever understand what sort of a jerk he is to cheat on her.

Oh my how utterly charming! What a treat and a treasure!!! Thank you so much for sharing this moment.
Saw them in The Visit at the old Biltmore Theatre... Still remember how great they were...
The Lunts they kill me. They really do.
At Ten Chimneys we certainly do and we celebrate the Lunts every day! Come visit us!!!
Robert Stephens absolutely smashed. A wonderful watch.

@Amy Talbot Beverly Cross was a family friend, and he was sweet on her before she married Robert.

Thank you for posting. I have visited the amazing Ten Chimneys in Wisconsin. it is always fun to ‘catch up’ with the Lunts ‘appearing’ in cyberspace.
ten chimneys is an amazing spot, so glad it is still there to appreciate
The standing ovation should have lasted 20 minutes. The Lunts WERE the theater.
I could hear Julie Andrews' perfect diction all day.
Wow, the Lunts were a class act!
She seems very in love :)
Robert, Maggie, so pretty. So drunk.
More likely jet lagged.
@@katford7286yea..right 😂😂
True legends...the Lunts
My goodness! The Lunts!
My, aren’t they gaga over each other. I thought she was going to jump on him.
4 legends! Only needed Noël Coward to join them to make it more perfect!
the catcher in the rye brought me here

Robert Stephens is legend...the most amazing, under-rated actor ever...he is by far the best person gracing that stage
No!! That was Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne!!! Legends of the theatre. Legends …..
RIP Maggie Smith 9/27/24
are those the 'Coco!' stairs in the back at the end?
That's a rather modest reception for artistic giants such as the Lunts. After all, Julie Andrews and Maggie Smith were merely introducers.
Did no one see how Robert just stood there clapping while her hand was hanging in midair
I noticed! Awkward! I don't think he wanted to leave the stage.. lol.

How odd to play the Lunts on with "Getting to Know You" from The King and I!
It's not odd at all. Listen to the words and you'll understand why the song was chosen.
@@TheTerryEmaybe the practical " I've grown accustomed to her face" would have been more appropriate in their kind of marriage....

her second husband was better looking...
her hair looks like a redd brillo pad
Are they drunk? Haha.
Are you an asshole? Sounds likes it.
@@TheTerryE Oh my, all this fun exchange, and you have to let a dash of filth end it all. Get a vocabulary, TheTerryE!
@@victoriajarvis2260 Agree & Robert Stephens did seem a tad drunk @Brad M
Definitely Robert Stephens lol!
Drunk in love haha
Only actors ever behave like this. I wonder why.
Behave like what?

He was drunk.
