  • The road that connects them to contemporary Greece was only opened in 1960! But they have lived there for more than 2,500 years. The Tsakones were coveted by the greatest cities of ancient Greece: in their rivalry, Athens, Spartes, Argos, Coryns and Mycenae always spared these proud and upright men who had a significant weight in the fragile balance of 'an empire in decline. Their capital, Prastos, hidden in the heart of the island, was a real hub of culture and an inaccessible core of resistance. “The Forgotten Bastion” is the story of an Orthodox Pope, who returns to the time of Easter, in the ancient capital of the Tsakones. Prastos has only two inhabitants left, it is still alive, even if in appearance it is no longer…

Interesting documentary.... I see the faces of my own ancestors here & appreciated all the references & sites. I think reminding us of the previous events are a good thing.... there's nothing really new out there, only yet to be discovered.

My best friend is a Tsakonas - in fact, his very name is Tsakonas: we’ve been best mates since childhood; I’m a Dorian myself (from Doris, in Central Greece, the original homeland of the Dorians before they made their way into the Peloponnese at about the 11th century BCE). In a manner of speaking then, as fellow Dorians, we have a cultural affinity - maybe that’s why we’ve always gotten along! 🙂👍

The Greeks of present day Athens are not only slavs, bulgarians, macedonians and turks but also Epirotans, Cretans, Thracians, Islanders, Polish, Albanians, Philipinos, Pakistanis, English etc all the people that are ethically or culturally Greek are welcomed to Greece. Tsakones speak an ancient Greek dialect the same do the Pontians, the Cypriots etc.

It is local dialect of Greek language, dialect, dialects, not other language.
Achaeans, Dorians, Ionians, Aeolians are the four major branches of the Hellenic(Greek) tribe from ancient times in Ancient Greece.
Greeks = Achaeans, Dorians, Ionians, Aeolians.

Tell the Anatolian Greeks forced out of Anatolia that they were being freed of Turkish domination. They were friends with the Muslims they shared their lives with the Turk but today everyone demonizes the Turk and plays politics with the nationalistic desperation.
