In addition to quite exceptional archaeological wealth, Athens is also a modern city. Proud of their beauty and a lifestyle protected, amongst other factors, by distance, the Greek islands each have their own personality. Crossing the Aegean sea, the film takes the viewer deep inside a lifestyle of exceptional quality. Brushing aside the clichés, Pierre Brouwers and his superb camerawork give a wonderful insight into eternal Greece, a fascinating backdrop to the country’s evolution into the modern era.
Geography of the islands. Economy. Population. Traditions. Everyday Life. Tourism.
ATHENS: the Ancient and Modern city. the Acropolis and major landmarks. Museum. Nightlife. Piraeus.
ISLANDS: Hydra. Poros. Aegina. Euboea. Mykonos. Ios. Santorini. Feast of Pentecost.

I wrote my comment 4 years ago, and today I stand by it - Greece is one of the most beautiful countries in the world, if not the most beautiful one. I distinctly remember sitting by the little port in Chora, Mykonos drinking some ouzo and letting time slip by while enjoying the exquisite colors of the water and everything else about this town, this island. I love just about everything of Greece. Utterly magnificent, majestic country!

Mibello Aleman I agree with you 100 and 10 percent.....absolutely, positively majestic, magnificent and just totally awesome. Of course I was there at the age of 20 so that might have influenced my memory a bit, but I don't think so. Anyway, I spent over 24 years in the Air Force and travelled to approximately 120 differently countries throughout the globe. Prior to all the flying, in 1981 - 1982 (1.5 years) I was stationed at Hellenikon Air Base near Athens, Greece. Whether it is Australia, Egypt, Thailand, Germany, Spain, etc., etc., etc., etc., I think Greece has them all beat hands down. I tell everyone I know in the U.S. if you can take only one overseas trip in your lifetime let it be Greece. The sights, the sounds, the food, the people, the nightlife and on and on. Everything about my time in Greece was just magical. I never had a bad day. I just felt like I was surrounded by wonder and magic. Some of the happiest days of my life. Hopefully I'll live long enough to return some day. Folks, do yourself a big favor and put Greece on the very top of your bucket list. I promise you will not be disappointed. One of the few places on earth that exceeds your expectations and anticipation. Believe me.....just awesome and the people are magnificent and kind.

@@tonyhelton2788 Tony, thank you for your lovely comment. Finally someone agrees with me! Greece is the most beautiful, exquisite, majestic, magnificent and historically significant country on planet Earth! Italy comes a close 2nd, but the colors of this country will take your breath away. The color of its waters and all the marble are mind blowing. The monuments are so majestic that you can not believe such exquisite monuments were created thousands of years ago. When I first saw the Parthenon I cried. I could not believe such exquisite beauty existed. Yes, I had seen thousands of photos and movies of it, but that is nothing compared to actually seeing it in person. I simply could not believe it! It is the most BEAUTIFUL building, structure on earth!!! I was lucky enough to convince the security guard on duty (with his big rifle) to let me sit on its steps for a photo, with no one around, so I am all alone sitting on the most beautiful building. A perfect photo, which I treasure and I am glad I have it because I don't know if I will ever return to Greece. I am in poor health, so I don't know if I could make such a journey again, especially with all the virus spreaders infecting us who are trying to not get infected. My apartment is filled with souvenirs of it and all the walls are covered with my photography of it, and Italy, which I adore. I am jealous of you for having traveled so much but I am happy that you love Greece as much as I do. Just before writing to you I was writing a message to a wonderful lady in Athens who makes patterns of needle works I do and she refuses to let me pay her. She is typical of the beautiful Greek people, who are not only gorgeous, but they are so kind. So. EVERYBODY head out to Greece first before going to any other country like you said Tony, no one will regret it. Tony, thank you for your wonderful comment. It greatly cheered me up because I am feeling really ill. Forgive any typos because I am also losing my eyesight. You made my day! Keep an eye out for My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3, which is already filming and in Greece. Hopefully it will be release in early 2023. Oopa! Take care.

@@mibelloaleman Hey Mibello, You're welcome. It is nice to talk to someone who appreciates Greece as much as I do. Like I said, I was only 20 years old when I arrived in Greece and was stationed at Hellenikon Air Base near Athens. I lived there for 1 and a half years and that was the by far the best year and a half of my life. Of course, being just 20 years old only added to the excitement and wonder of the environment. It was like being in a whole different world. I grew up in Kentucky, so going to the beach was a novelty to me. I wondered how I had ever lived without it. Anyway, I'm getting old and tired too. Almost 62 and wondering where in the world all that time went to. I would love to visit Greece again too. If one of us wins the Lottery they should give the other a call. LOL Whataya say? Take care Felos. Tony

One of the worlds most fabulous tourist destinations! Historically, Athens has always had a top heavy government, which allows the residents and tourists to ignore their responsibilities. The result is traffic chaos. When in Athens, don't act like an Athenian. Obey all traffic laws, it's bad taste to add to Athen's nightmare streets. If Athen's resident's and visitors ever accept their duties and responsibilities, the world would prosper, knowing that Athen's streets, civil servants, communities and adults finally became law-abiding, ethical and conscientious. Imagine that! I'm travelling there soon!

The pronunciation of the narrator is messed up. There is no place in Santorini named OIYA, it's E-AH EEEEEEEE AHHHH The island volcano was named Saint Irene by the Italians (Sant'Irena) which resulted to the Greek sound Santorini. The official name of the island is Thera which means gate in classical Greek. He also mispronounced Aegina (EH- γina) and other places. And like someone else noted, no word about the stolen marbles from the Parthenon by Lord Elgin, a thief, who obtained permission from the Turkish governor during the Ottoman rule in Greece, to lift the Caryatids and other sculptures undisturbed and take them away to his country!

Lavish production, but for heaven's sake couldn't anyone be bothered to check the pronunciation of the names? Only "Poros" (and "Santorini" - which isn't a Greek name anyway) were correct. It's like a documentary about The Beatles calling their hometown "Lowberpole".

Very nice! Greeks seem like Italians or other Semitic peoples--I don't mean to offend Greeks!--but they certainly have their own distinct characteristics. They are not the same as Italians, and as part-Italian, their culture and behaviors seem exotic to me!

South Italy was inhabited for thousands of years by Greeks. The cities there were established by Greeks (Magna Graecia). That's why we have a huge % of common DNA with the Italians. The Greco-Roman world was also a fact.
Greeks are not Semitic people. Yet we influenced the Semitic culture (and we were influenced by them), since we were neighbours with the Phoenicians, Jews, Arabs and many other peoples for thousands of years.
I like the word "exotic". It's a Greek word! Sometimes we are indeed exotic!

@@georgebethanis3188 There is no such thing as "Caucasian white" race. Those are just simplified terms used by simpletons in places like the US to make life easier for themselves and have everyone "categorized" in their heads. The Greeks are a melting pot as Greece is and always has been in the crossroads of East and West and many many civilizations have left their genetic mark on the local population. You can find Greeks as dark as Arabs and as pale as Scandinavians. Greeks with blonde hair and Greeks with blue "Aryan" eyes. Reality is not always as simple as we'd like it to be.

( I know, my father was on of them ... It is an honeur to serve as a guard to the fallen soldier !)

30:00 - The tide or current at the straits of Euripus Straits is not because of the change in sea level !
The theory states that the tidal phenomenon of the Evripos Straits is attributed to the periodical change of the direction of gravity, due to the horizontal conjunction of the attractive powers of the Moon and the Sun in the center and the surface of the Earth.
Magnetic attraction is applied by the Moon and the Sun on the water mass. The movements of the Moon around the Earth and those of the Earth around the Sun effect in such a way that the double attraction applied on our planet by the Sun and the Moon constantly changes direction, causing the application of forces on the earthly waters of the channel, that consequently change their direction periodically.
The Sun's attractive force, despite its incomparably greater mass, is three times smaller than that of the Moon, because it is far more distant.

Youth in Greece deserve law-abiding, ethical and conscientious civil servants, their future actually depends upon it. Let's double traffic laws in capital cities and watch long overdue, law-abiding streets and adults appear, in Athens!!
