"Bro you're pushing 40, listening to Olivia Rodrigo" and Brad saying he's only a few years older than Olivia was funnier than it should've been.

So nice of Olivia Rodrigo to center her album around popular fictional manga character Guts from Berserk 🥰🥰
@kopper7509 just wait for the high school musical arc
I’m glad she toned down the backstory a little bit for general audiences too ❤
I thought he was called Nuts the Bersekin guy
It's bad that ever time I see the word Guts I think of the our boy 🖤😭

It's interesting that I hear Olivia and I hear Taylor, Hayley Williams, Lorde and even Lana. It's interesting that Olivia reflects her influences, but like a synthesis, it works, it sounds like all big pop stars from the past 15 years bringing their best aspects in just one person.
I mean, i think you’d struggle to find any artist that has no influences whatsoever
Phoebe Bridgers is in there too
I haven't followed her music very closely, but she reminds me of how much I miss Michelle Branch. She was ANOTHER half-Asian American pop rock chick who ALSO released HER debut single about romance that became the biggest hit of her career AND songwriting AND album debut at just 18, which was just 20 YEARS PRIOR!!! Not to mention, she ALSO paved the path for other pop rock teen artists to follow, including Avril a year later! She's the only Asian American music act I can think of who crossed over between pop, rock, country and adult contemporary charts. And I just finished listening to what should've been her 2010s follow-up album West Coast Time and it sounded like we were robbed of hearing her natural evolution into a music vet.
Imo, talent means nothing to have a successful career if you don't have just as strong of a management team. Taylor should bless her lucky stars she has one. Especially since she herself idolized Michelle Branch, owning a blue guitar because of her and even covering All You Wanted at Michelle's birth-state of Arizona!
Todd in the Shadows released his last Song Vs Song episode on RUclips. And I wanted to make some suggestions.
Two of my suggestions were All You Wanted Vs I'm With You or Are You Happy Now? vs My Happy Ending
Two great breakup songs from two different rocker girls who were growing from teenhood to adulthood at the same time but fell off for different but still sad reasons.
no way a pop star sounds like other pop stars ?
im sorry what song sounds like lana??
Ballad of a Homeschool Girl is about being cringey and awkward, so it makes sense that the lyrics are also cringey and awkward. I relate to it too much lolol
fr, im actually homeschooled so yeah I can reallly relate
bad idea right is a banger i cant believe people dislike it
I love it and it was basically my life in 2016 lol
It's such a brain scratcher omg
I think for some people (including myself) pop just really isn’t for them. Especially the style of pop now.
I think for some people (including myself) pop just really isn’t for them. Especially the style of pop now.
I'm so happy to find people who think the same too.
I have not liked most of the music the last couple of years has had to offer, but Olivia Rodrigo’s music is a win in my book. I don’t care if she’s a “product,” she’s a queen of modern music.
This album would have came across as very trendy and normal in 2009 since Disney stars doing rock were all over the charts but since it was released now, it feels like a huge breath of fresh air
I don't really get the whole "product" thing. Like yeah shes a disney kid that's promoted like crazy but when it comes to the music, almost every song of hers is written by simply her and her producer. She's a genuine artist and writer and it's very personal. She doesn't have a whole writing staff or picking demos of a shelf as Brad stated about some other disney stars. It's just good music with heavy promoted. What's the difference between her and any other mainstream artist?
L take
I mean who cares about an artist being a product. If you like the music just enjoy it. 😂
@@mochibun3890 in the mainstream if you don't leave Disney they end up in Dysney anyway, another thing is the Eras tour which is a Disney show
I really appreciate the fact that Olivia Rodrigo had the guts(no pun intended) to release a pop rock song with a guitar solo to pop radio as her second single to whats supposed to be a mainstream pop album.
Not to mention she swears all over the whole thing
no phun intended
I’m so excited to see how Olivia will cover tools “the grudge”!
I busted a fucking gut 🤣
WEAR THE GUTS LIKE A CROWN
The fact that he said about the censorship of fame fucker is so funny cus she made a whole joke tik tok about all the options she had, one of which was “mark zuccer” lmao
What is great about this album is how she takes the non single tracks very seriously. This really highlights the importance of albums and telling a whole story. Every song has a purpose in creating this image.
Kinda sad that the bar is "Wow I'm impressed by how they tried on ALL the songs!", but unfortunately I guess I know what you mean, and you're right that it's not always the case lol.
I appreciate that Olivia is bringing a more sincere kind of vibe with elements of older, more fundamental sounds that made pop music great in the first place.
Brad’s got a lotta guts to be talking about this album.

I’m far outside the target demographic for Olivia Rodrigo (28, almost 29 year old guy) but as someone who grew up loving Taylor Swift and Paramore, SOUR really worked for me in a way that a lot of Olivia’s contemporaries don’t, and GUTS is even more of an improvement. I’m so glad she leaned more into the rock influenced sound with this one because I think it’s where she really shines
if you like taylor and paramore your litterally the target demographic
i don't believe in age. i like Taylor and Olivia i'm 38. like what ya like.
I hate Taylor swift with a passion, but I loved sour, unexpectedly became top 5 favorite albums of 2021 for me

@@mickmcnabb6147Don't say that first part in a real life scenario
Brad liking Olivia Rodrigo is the most unexpected thing ever, but best thing ever!!
Yeah. I loved the album and thought it was great but I was afraid they would be biased because she's trended on TikTok before
One thing I really love about artists who work with Dan Nigro is they all usually write their own music, Olivia and Conan Gray being the main examples. He seems to just let them do their thing and I respect and prefer that because the music feels real and not generic storytelling bullshit.
chappell roan too
every time dan nigro is helping with a song it always hits
Whenever Brad uses the suprised/confused face in the thumbnail you know it’s gonna be a good one
Brad has a lot more to say on this than most of the albums he talks about on his channel, which i think goes to show how interesting and thought-piece-y Guts is.
In a pop industry where every single rough edge is polished down to a smooth surface, her flaws end up being endearing. The fact that you can hear her voice falter from time to time during performances is a reminder that she isn't lip syncing and some of her more awkward lyrical phrasing reminds you that these are songs actually written by a 19-20 year old. It's a pretty tall feat for a former Disney star to come off as relatable as she does.
the writer credit is to the producer, who wrote the instrumental probably or helped piece the song together into a good structure.
One time on the radio they played vampire and instead of fame fucker they just said FAAAAAAME......
That’s so cringey lmao

Yeah this album kicks ass, I didn't really like the debut
@@HalfDucki liked the debut alot but this album wipes
yeah, sour was too full of slow unrememberable tracks.
@@me-in3mj see that's interesting because I found lacy to be one of the best songs on the album. The line it tows between jealousy and homoeroticism is super interesting, and kind of sums up the feeling of "do I want to be her or be with her?"
TASTE!
I actually can’t believe i saw someone listen to the bridge of ”Logical”, pause and say ”the guy has a point”
So glad you made this video, otherwise I wouldn't have found out about her!! I'm a 90s kid so I grew up with artists like Hillary Duff, Avril Lavigne, etc and she's giving me the same feelings they did, something I never thought I'd feel again at almost 31.
Bro what how did you miss the Good 4 U is everywhere phase in 2021. Like even if you didn’t listen to SOUR directly you heard it at grocery stores & everywhere else
@@greetingsmars I am a shut-in, I don't go out of the house much.
@@greetingsmars good 4 U is too much of a paramore ripoff. this whole album is better in the rock aspect, though Sour still has a special place in my heart for being the pandemic album lmao
Love is Embarrassing is my personal favorite song of the Album. No other song legit got me moving as much as that. Its so electric, its so catchy. I love it
I have so much insane respect for Olivia bringing quality rock music back into the mainstream spotlight
This project unironically reminds me of weezer at a lot of points.
The opener is My-Name-Jonas-sounding
bad idea sounds like beverly hills in a weird way with the spoken word verses and 2-chord chorus (but its way better)
and Ballad of a homeschool girl could be a song off of any earlier weezer album, and the lyrics are about falling for people who’s sexual preferences don’t line up with yours (Pink Triangle, anyone?)
I was thinking Surf Wax America for the opener, both kind of work tbh.
Deadass said the same thing shes just weezer now, literally no difference at all, both weird and cringe yet not bad
@@MvsG18different kind of weird and cringe but literally the same lmao
I feel like the purposefully awkward and relatability-driven lyricism is very Weezer. It's just Olivia targets teen girls while Weezer was for loser kinda kids.
I saw the line "every guy I like is gay" being meme to oblivion on gay twitter and jokingly ask a friend if this album is just Pinkerton for women? It somehow does turn out that way lol
ballad of a homeschooled girl is basically weezer's pink triangle for femcels
great song and great album in general, there's a lot of weezer in this.
This album is genuinely fantastic. Olivia really hit it out of the park with this one!
Jeremy endorsed 💯💯💯💯
Loving your energy in this one, Brad.

I can't help but hear the Home Depot theme in "Bad Idea Right?"
That’s what I thought of immediately
I literally recently just finally gave her music a listen because of the amount of hate this girl got from that side of twitter.
I couldn't be more glad to call myself a fan. Ballad of the Homeschooled Girl tickled a part of my brain that I thought died in highschool. That's a damn good hook.
It’s amazing that she made an entire album about the protagonist of the hit anime/manga classic BERSERK
Her producer/co writer dan nigro used to be in an alternative rock band and most the songs on the album were recorded with a live band
I know chat was removed to discourage the racist and shitty ppl in the community and that its probably a good decision in the long run but man i miss chat :( it was always nice seeing everyones opinions and was a fun way to interactwith the community. me personally i love this album. theres gonna be self obsessed/pretentious people who hate on it because they wanna be quirky or different, but me personally i actually enjoy things and im not explosively negative all the time to the point where its concerning. I'm absolutely obsessed with this album, i find it very relatable and it made me cry so hard that i was hyperventilating by the end. it's like a 15/10 for me fr and my favorites are making the bed and teenage dream, lacy and ballad of a homeschooled girl are also pretty high up there.
I think people just hate how popular Olivia and the album is. I was the same way with driver's license when it was being overplayed but once I gave SOUR a listen I enjoyed it.
@renec8249 true. things being popular really rub some people the wrong way and I get it when people don't like overplayed stuff but it's the people who take it personally that need to come back reality for a second😭
just because you really liked the album doesnt mean you have to insult everyone with a different opinion
@@meloshi2597 If someone has a different opinion, then sure, but if you solely hate it based on its success, personally, I don't think it counts
You can find this album boring without trying to be quirky, people have different opinions.
I'm far outside the target audience for Disney stars, but I gotta say you hit it on the head saying Olivia still feels more authentic than, say, Miley or Demi. Even when they were trying to prove they were "grown up", it still came across like "it's not a phase, MOM".
That's because Miley and Demi tried to follow Britney and her debut into adulthood; it didn't work for them.
@@benamisai-kham5892 That actually kinda makes sense in a way. That and how sudden and dramatic the shifts were just didn't feel like they were organically evolving as artists.
Miley is more authentic now tho.
I think the album cover summarizes the whole thing, in which it’s very similar to SOUR but it’s a bit darker and the person is slightly older.
Brad I may not watch this whole video and I haven’t been keeping up with your videos much b/c of many reasons but I really hope you’re doing better and it’s wonderful that you do what you do
ok
In the early 2000’s and before artists made a heap of songs that sounded similar to their old ones bc thats what people loved . thats what made them so popular so i think its a good thing she makes all her songs kinda similar her songs sound like they belong in the 2000’s

it seems like no one wants to listen to the first paramore album anymore... this does not sound like early paramore lmao
I really don't get the hate that Olivia Rodrigo is getting for her music sounding similar to other musicians (like Taylor Swift). I'm not a professional musician, but I can see how hard it is so create a song that is 100% unique and not influenced by anything, especially in pop music. People shouldn't be hating on Olivia, she still has a lot of room to grow as a musician.
i was vibing into it a lot but i eventually got really tired of the last songs and the structure progression of them, but i know this is on me full knowing i am not her core audience and demographic. Genuinely strong songs nonetheless.
I’m glad I’m not the only one who thought of Loser by Beck when listening to Get Him Back.

Honestly im not really big for Olivia in general (im just tired of the instrumentals pretty much, used to work at dollar general and now i have a pavlovian response) but i still have to admit that she is an amazing vocalist. She has a really beatiful vibrato and general style, and i really wish i could enjoy it more but just something about her instrumentals have always rubbed me the wrong way for some reason? I literally have no idea.
Like its okay to not be crazy about Olivias music. It isnt okay to hate on a woman for making and catering toward a demographic of similar young women and doing it well/successfully. Its a tired trend.
Brad you need to hear the new 30 seconds to Mars album. It is an experience to say the least
Wait, this is not Berserk soundtrack - 4 Guts, what the hell
Olivia Rodrigo has so much potential. Sour was pretty alright, but this album was great. I'm excited for what comes next for her.
this is obviously a cut of a live, but idk chill out with the jokes about abuse. i like watching your videos, those just suck to hear a bit
New layout for vids looks really clean and professional :) like it a lot
I think that Olivia Rodrigo is better live. Live she sounds great, but she feels like a safer more consumable Hayley Williams on record. But it's produced really well here, Vampire was actually great ngl, though I think I agree with the redundancy argument (good for you is literally family friendly pop polished Misery Business I will take no alternate opinions). Lacy was chill. Ballad of a Homeschooled girl was good, as was making the bed, logical was okay, get him back was surprisingly great. Love is embarrassing had some kickass lyrics. The Grudge is vehicular permit and that's fine, pretty isn't pretty was okay, teenage dream is a good, maybe even great, song but the teenage dream is a fucking sham. 12 songs, good job not making an ep and calling it an album. I'd agree and say it's a 70/100
Not what "literally" means but I hear you I guess. I disagree with the 70/100 rating, I'd give it a 7/10.
