pretty isn't pretty gives off the biggest early 2000's teen girl movie energy from the instrumental to the vocals. i could easily see that song being played in something like mean girls in the background kind of like the song 'built this way' in the movie - it gives such nostalgic vibes 😭 definitely one of the best songs on the album and underrated!!
You could also look at Lacy through the lens of a woc and being jealous and wishing she was as desirable as a white girl. The lyrics are about how “Lacy” is everywhere and she’s obsessed and wishes she was her. (“You got the one thing I want”) Definitely something to note.
and thinking about lace and what it represents too. it’s often associated with wedding dresses; the color white, elegant but dainty, fragile, virginal and pure. all large depictions of white women throughout history while woc have been seen/depicted as (obviously not white), loud, brash, sexual, uncontrollable, etc.
not everything is about race... and she's literally half white. She looks more white than a "woc". As a woc its so annoying that people victimize not being white so much. And im damn sure that the person who made that comment wasnt even a woc
Olivia Rodrigo is such a clever songwriter and GUTS sees a more "mature" songwriting compared to SOUR, they are both phenomenons! I loved this episode 10, I just arrived but I might stay, I liked your discuss
lacy is such a specific feeling and she captured it so well. it's about being consumed by your obsession with a person and having overflowing jealousy. its about a person that is so perfect you can't tell if their kindness is genuine or fake. you can't tell if their compliments are genuine or not. the song makes a lot more sense when you hear "obsessed" from the secret vinyl tracks. i know a lot of people think it's about olivia crushing on a girl (and it could be) but i view it as a song of pure jealousy
also a HUGE reason for the sophomore slump is timing - usually an artist can pull from 10+ years of songwriting for their first album, and then they have only a year (if that) to write their second record so the quality of the songs usually tends to suffer
i did too. There conversation about the album went pretty deep. i did not connected the 2 about Sour's Brutal and Guts Teenage Draeam...Pretty Cool. I agree the purple era is over like her teenage years.
I have had a theory for awhile that every artists second album should be entitled “Sophomore Slump”; that way if it’s AWESOME then it’s an ironic title and if it sucks then, well, you called it, lmao.
Sour is for everyone, Guts is for the girlies who used to be considered more mature or skilled than their peers but their peers have caught up and now you’re just slightly above average and constantly fighting to get back on top lol
As a 65 year old male I shouldn’t even be in this discussion 😊 However Olivia’s music is transcendental and you get to appreciate it regardless of age and gender. Both albums are exceptional but Guts is no skip for me. On another note who looks like Bardot?
Sabrina Carpenter, So Lacy Is Like About Sabrina And With Her Ex Joshua Basset And Him Dating Sabrina Carpenter While Dating Olivia Both Of Them Didn’t Know That They Were Being Cheated On. Everyone Was Fighting About It And Olivia Made A Song About Sabrina Which is Lacy.
please do something like this about Madison Beer, she is such an underrated artist but is sooo good. She really deserves more appreciation and she just dropped an album in September which is one of the best I've ever heard
This was so good an episode guys. My first time here after the Sabrina Slow-burn episode. I think Guts is gonna win AOTY. The songwriring is AMAZING. My favorite songs are grudge, vampire and Lacy. Tgosr last few lines in Lacy are astoundingly self aware and poetic
If I would describe the two Albums as a physical persona in my own perspective. Sour is like a head turner while Guts is like the person you can be infatuated to.
Talk about Emily mariko deal with Snapchat to only use their platform! I think this is a deep dive that needs to be talked about. Right after her wedding when her engagement is the highest she changes platforms. I can expect so many people re downloaded Snapchat
Just read this lyrics in making the bed: "and every night i wake up from this one recuring dream I'm driving though the city and the breaks go out on me"
Yes...! I have tried watching a few of their episodes because I want to like this podcast soo bad but I think these 2 need their own podcasts. Nicky just likes to hear himself talk and coco is the one who actually gets things but she lets Nicky take the credit and I'm always like girl WHY speak up plsss
It's a Tie, even if you add 'all i want ' to SOUR. 🎶💜 To us, SOUR is an album of the Eight Singles and are so angry with the online haters and trolls that forced her to abandon releasing more Singles from SOUR. 🎶😡😢😞 Now GUTS is more of a Collection of amazing songs that need each other to be successful. 🎶💜 Love the Whole Album on continuous Repeat at work 🎶💜🎶.
Excellent job breaking down both albums. As for a music video for “pretty isn't pretty”, this is the closest thing of getting one for now: ruclips.net/video/aDm4-auW7Q4/видео.htmlsi=ksyr7BmsP6ht3ynX or ruclips.net/video/xr_j3sT-bc8/видео.htmlsi=ySZ2WeEZKJTYRNgn
i wouldn’t say olivia was first or one of the first successful tiktok musicians like before her there was billie eilish, meg thee stallion, doja cat, flo milli like since 2018 there’s been tons of artists who blew up because of tiktok
megan also blew up summer of 2019. hot girl summer and her music was also everywhere. she definitely had an extra boost after tiktok but she was already mainstream and in the culture before hand. doja cat was the first to blow up on tiktok and was pushed into mainstream or reintroduced for people who'd only seen moo clips back in 2018. olivia's case of blowing up is absolutely an enigma to the point i've never seen it in my life, people who work higher at iheart have never seen it, both spotify and apple music execs came out and said they've never seen something like what happened with olivia ever happen in the last 20 years/with the internet in play. olivia quite literally blew up overnight within the span of 3 days and entered generational status within months. i honestly don't think we'll see anything like olivia, drivers license and sour happen again for at least another few decade. it's also something we've never seen with any other artist who's blown up on tiktok and likely will never happen again. also after olivia, i'd argue while there absolutely have been people who've blown up or had a massive increase in listeners, no one has really became a mainstream phenomenon other than ice spice. ice is similar to olivia in that she blew up in the beginning of her career but more like doja in the landing she made and build up compared to being quite literally overnight. so far likely the two next likely people are d4vd and renee rapp. even then they're not mainstream despite being unfathomably successful and are only in the beginning of their recording and preforming careers. i think d4vd will have a break through sometime sooner than later and it's undeniable he's blown up. i think renee has a chance at becoming mainstream quite soon as well and has gained a considerable following but i also don't really think she "blew up" as much as she's more so steadily gained a following in the last 5 years with the career moves she's made. i do think tiktok has helped but i don't think in out of everything in the last 5 years it's helped as much as other stuff. i also don't think tiktok is the driving reason why she's getting air time on the vmas, good morning america, or other performance circuits. she's had a team now for 5 years. she's been performing on a national stage for 5 years. she did broadway for a considerable amount of time and the performance/ press circuits that come with that on a national stage, she's done an hbo show, and won a jimmy award all before entering recording full time.
@@user-iw8wl9wu8y You could argue this happened with Katy Perry first. With her debut album, she released ''Hot'n Cold' and 'I kissed a girl' and she was instantly catapulted into stardom. But a little less impactful (Katy appealed to everyone not just girls and gays) and sped up because of the virality of Tiktok

I love both albums but yeah definitely GUTS much more because the lyrics to me is like poetry esp. the grudge, logical, & making the bed.
SAME! I love all those but lacy and teenage dream especially feel like poetry
Yeah and I like the addition of songs not focusing much on romance, mostly because romance isn’t my thing lol

I believe this is sorta her inspiration. Especially since its rumored to be about sabrina
and thinking about lace and what it represents too. it’s often associated with wedding dresses; the color white, elegant but dainty, fragile, virginal and pure. all large depictions of white women throughout history while woc have been seen/depicted as (obviously not white), loud, brash, sexual, uncontrollable, etc.
@@MikelleGI think she’s definitely moved away from that drama so it’s not about Sabrina
not everything is about race... and she's literally half white. She looks more white than a "woc". As a woc its so annoying that people victimize not being white so much. And im damn sure that the person who made that comment wasnt even a woc
@@aspireistoinspirebeforewee3519 its 100% about sabrina. Sabrina dressed as bardot multiple times thats why olivia says "bardot reincarnate".

Same ..guts is my no skip album❤
but u have to admit Sour and Guts are no skip albums. It is pretty amazing she was able to do that.
me after 10 seconds of seeing & hearing you both just now for the first time ever: "hm i’m gonna love their vibe"
sour will forever be ICONIC but i like guts a lot more because I relate to it SO much more as a teenage girl
i really loved this episode! finally i listen to some justice for jealousy jealousy
It's such an underrated song! I'm so glad you enjoyed. We would love to turn this into a series :)
