To me this hymn speaks of God renewing the world, time and again; forgiveness, fresh starts, and His faithfulness.

This was a popular song that we sang in church in the 50s & 60s when I was young before Cat Stevens bought it out. One of my favourites & definitely one that you learnt when learning piano as it was a simple melody.

My understanding of this song is that it’s comparing today’s “new day” to the very first day that God ever created on Earth (in Eden).

I is a beautiful song, used to sing it as little girl, but i believe she is comparing it to the garden of Eden, the first grass, the first dew, the first bird ever to sing praise to God and the first humans to ever walk with God in the garden, maybe playful running in the garden, in a way she is redeeming Eve's legacy as first sinner.

As I lie awake during this night in agony, I must commend you - this was awesome. You have a brilliant voice and your piano playing is awesome. I really like your version of this song. I remember Cat Stevens' version and I'm also a fan of Rick Wakeman. I watched this a few times.

I always heard the last line saying "praise for them springing fresh from the Word."
Also, I understood "born of the one light Eden saw play," to mean God was playing in His re-creating each morning.

Indeed Luke, the freshness of a new morning has something very special and even quite sacred. I take my little dachshund walking every morning around the wetland at Country Life and this is my quiet time and when I talk to God. I love the sound of the birds and the ducks, and the smell of newness. Thank you for sharing this song with us 🙏 ❤

I love this song, b/c to me it parallels the work and resurrection of Jesus with God’s work of creation in Genesis 1 and 2. There is actually a long Christian tradition of holding creation and the harmony of the Garden of Eden together with the new creation brought to us through Jesus’s life, death and resurrection. So to me those pros about the first dew in the first garden, focusing on where God’s feet pass, etc… makes me think of God walking with Adam in the cool of the day in the Eden. If find this thought very encouraging b/c ‘the One Light Eden saw play,’ is the Son and Word of God; the light of life(as John 1 puts it). And for me, this is capped off by the last line of the last verse- “God’s recreation (or maybe re-creation?) of the new day.” This is particularly amazing given the creation/new creation parallel. From the beginning and especially through the new day (the Easter Sunday morning this song centers on), God’s vocation/recreation on earth has been to make/mold humanity into His likeness and image and now we have this light, this morning, for God through the grace of Christ by the abiding presence of the Holy Spirit can by His sanctifying presence mold us more and more into His likeness and image: the cross and the empty tomb brings creation (you and me) perfectly back into God’s hands- hallelujah.

Morning has broken like the first morning,
Blackbird has spoken like the first bird.
Praise for the singing! Praise for the morning!
Praise for them, springing fresh from the Word!
Sweet the rains new fall, sunlit from Heaven,
Like the first dewfall on the first grass.
Praise for the sweetness of the wet garden,
Sprung in completeness where His feet pass.
Mine is the sunlight! Mine is the morning,
Born of the one light, Eden saw play!
Praise with elation, praise every morning,
God's recreation of the new day!

The tune Morning g Has Broken is an old Scottish tune called Bunessan (probably from Irish origin). Mary M. Macdonald (Màiri Dhòmhnallach in Scottish Gaelic) (1789-1872), who lived in the crofting community of Ardtun near Bunessan and spoke only Gaelic, wrote her hymn "Leanabh an àigh" to a traditional melody. It was originally performed as the carol "Child In The Manger", Eleanor Farjeon wrote her own lyrics to the tune almost 100 years later.

A new creation, born of the One Light Eden saw play.

Thank you for reminding the world that Eleanor Farjeon wrote this beautiful hymn, not Cat Stevens. Two spelling issues . . . 'Stretham' should be 'Streatham', 'fresh from the world' should be 'fresh from the Word'.
