The people for the most part here are very pleasant, and yes, it has very mild winters. There are some nice restaurants in the Alley, and an enjoyable community theater. The cons are, you really don't want to move here without a job lined up. A driver said to me, "This is a place where if you stop off of the interstate and get stuck here, it will take you years to get out." There is hidden economic disparity in Aiken, and I would imagine the poor here have a hard time improving their situation, due to limited resources and exceedingly poor public transportation. There is only a circulator bus for seniors that runs during the weekdays, and only once every two hours. The rideshare drivers mostly go to Augusta or Columbia to work if it is full-time income, so service is very sporadic. As a result, the local cab company is frequently overwhelmed with requests, and I have gotten stranded a few times, which didn't happen when I lived in Augusta. The weather can be extreme - there are few gentle rains here, more like monsoons. However, so far, I have found the heat to be a bit less oppressive than it was in Augusta. The hospital here is better than the ones I have been to in Augusta, but for specialists, you will likely have to go to Columbia or Augusta. I tried to get an appointment here and they were scheduling 4 months out because of how underserved the area is. The situation is only slightly better with AU Health. This is a good bedroom community for those in higher-paying professions who work in North Augusta or Augusta to buy property within, and is relatively safe. However, for renters, the cost on average here is higher than in Augusta. I only recommend it if you have a vehicle and a very stable source of income.
This is a great video. You explain the city to a T. I lived in S. Carolina near Georgetown a few years back. I am thinking of Aiken now as I'm retired. Thank you again❤
I grew up near Aiken back in the late 60's-mid 70's in the town of New Ellenton. Since I retired and currently living near Atlanta, I've been thinking of moving back to be near family. Always missed Aiken county...
We moved from Illinois to Florida, no state income tax is great however I really don't see actual southern charm here. People seem to be mainly transplants as we are and I feel that it has diluted the local identity. Does Aiken still have southern charm? We are somewhat foodies too, so no lack of that here. We love driving up to Charleston for a weekend to enjoy the restaurants there. Does Aiken have a great variety on independent restaurants?
I moved here from Georgia back in December and I have to say the people are some of the nicest I’ve ever met

A con is there are a lot of rude people moving here from up north. As an aikenite we call them "Yankees" not to be confused with northerners.
Bless their hearts 😉
Tell those northern that they are YOUR GUEST and they better behave themselves. And yes I’m from the north!!
Boohoo
Don't move to the south unless you plan to respect and preserve our culture, history, and heritage
Absolutely!! Even if you don’t agree with it, respect is always the best route! ☺️

You have a history of losing.
From a person born in the old Aiken Hospital almost 70 years ago, please don't come here! She must not have been here long, I have a Gigabit of speed😊
