i met her in buffalo ny at the BSO. She was really awesome and she interacts with you with problem it's like she not's deaf at all. she is the best precussionist i have ever seen ,deaf or not!
I have to say, i am deaf myself - not as bad as Evelyn, but i play percussion too, a drum called a timba. She's so inspiring. I also have to say, i think some comments on here have been rather offensive - deaf people can indeed talk. If someone has been deaf from birth, then perhaps they cannot talk, but she clearly states she has not been deaf all her life
I love her! BTW, this is an excerpt from a presentation she did on Ted Talks about listening to music with your whole body. The whole presentation is here on youtube, and I highly recommend that you give it a listen if you liked this. It's soooooooo interesting!
to hear stuff she puts her hands on paper and feels the beat nd tht kindaa tells her when to go. ii didd about her in my year6 SATS! :) im onlii inn yr6 atm so it was quiet recenttly xxxx
Profoundly deaf means: "S: (adj) profoundly deaf, stone-deaf, deaf as a post, unhearing (totally deaf; unable to hear anything) " Evelyn has been profoundly deaf since she was 12.
Wikipedia: "Deafness is defined as a degree of impairment such that a person is unable to understand speech even in the presence of amplification.[2] In profound deafness, even the loudest sounds produced by an audiometer (an instrument used to measure hearing by producing pure tone sounds through a range of frequencies)) may not be detected. In total deafness, no sounds at all, regardless of amplification or method of production, are heard.
evilness were you born deaf I'm a drummer just madness in my head since I was born severely tone deaf to high pitch bass and drums always moved me to the point some people looked at me as a freak haha lol
if thats what you think then fine. All i know, is i know completely deaf people who can talk - fine if you dont believe me. We'll just agree to disagree
@pepsico8 not true, have you never met a completely deaf person who can speak? i have. if they have heard one point in their life, they can speak. if they are deaf from birth, they cant speak
You are denying that she is totally deaf. Just because you cannot understand how something can be so, does not mean that it is not so. Evelyn Glennie is a Scot, as am I and I can tell from her accent that she is deaf. She was NOT born deaf but has been totally, profoundly deaf since the age of 12.
well, to be honest your ignorance is laughable. i know where i stand, so do many others and im not gonna waste my time speaking to you guys. This all started off because i find Evelyn truly inspirational and i think she has done a beautiful thing - showing that one has no boundaries. All of a sudden, people are arguing about whether she is genuinely deaf - all because she can speak. so i am stopping all this, i want no more part in this, cus to be honest its making me feel depressed
She has been deaf since around the age of 12. She hears by feeling vibrations using other parts of her body, the 2 best being her feet and tummy. Also Hellen Keller was blind and deaf and she could talk as well as write, so cutemaniac1 your logic is flawed.

She speaks really clearly for a profoundly deaf person. She has a great understanding of music and its purpose.

she didn't lose her hearing until she was 12 or so. from what i have heard, that makes a big difference on how a person would speak.

@seth1987 "Hater Gonna Hate."
Some people just have to find something to attack when they encounter someone better than them at something.
@TorgeirFausken thank you very much indeed! I've seen that in Zivkovic's website there's a CD with this piece. cool!

thanks xD was rather confused
Beethoven was deaf, when he had 46 years old.
and still...
do i need to say more?
Awesome drum solo! What's it called?
evilness were you born deaf I'm a drummer just madness in my head since I was born severely tone deaf to high pitch bass and drums always moved me to the point some people looked at me as a freak haha lol
She is really deaf, she learned to play the drums by listening to the vibrations...
What model snare drum is that?

I'm almost completely stupid in my left ear and a total moron in my right ear and I can play drums!
You need to educate yourself, read about Evelyn. She has been totally deaf since she was 12.

I'll bet she goes through a lot of wristwatches.
I wonder if we would like this as much if a guy played it.
