1) It is not so important if Evelyn had 29 or 49 or 59 years, the important thing is how passionate she was and still is by the sounds, learn to listen and teach listening to those who hear not only play an instrument, but when she talks about the art of hearing and sense not only with their ears, opening the understanding of what you hear not only what is produced by mankind but by nature, is not shocking to see her in concert, but to understand what she says of her experience since young.
This is a great video, but my main criticism of it would be that focusing on this concept of "Ooh look, a deaf musician, how is that possible?" is completely missing the point. Dame Evelyn Glennie's music has so much more value than just that, and I think focusing on it like this segment belittles her and her music and distracts from the sound. Evelyn once said "I want to teach people to listen." So my reply to the reporter in this video is: Start listening! (thanks for posting though!!)
Ruth Underwood who played for Frank Zappa I believe had very similar training. But that would be something to hear especially the way she did "St Alphonso's Pancake Breakfast". After the song "Don't Eat The Yellow Snow"
@macaroni24464 That, but that is something most great musicians will do. What's so special about Evelyn is that she feels the music. I think it's very much like how you can feel your chest voice (lower, speaking voice) resonate in your chest and in your abdomen, while very high pitches resonate more in your head.
Realize that Evelyn, taking 29 or 45 years has and retains the same enthusiasm when executing the drums? This is not old, musical passion that has no number of years ... just have a feeling.
Rushing in where angels fear to tread...It seems to me that there are many kinds of deafness, and I would encourage anyone interested to visit Glennie's website and read The Hearing Essay. It explains very well just what she can experience of sounds. Not nothing, but different from what most of us hear! You can have a hearing loss and still experience music in different ways, and feel sounds through other parts of your body.
yes i compleatly agree... many people see a wonderful musician, but she would not have gotten all those awards for being a hearing musician. but maybe she deserves all the publicity she gets for being def. still i also think if you show her to a friend, dont tell them she's def until after they fall in love with her
Cmon! would they ever let it go! Why must the media bombard us with 'SHES DEAF!!! OMFG!!' . The idea that she has never heard an audience clap is ridiculous. She even has said herself she just hear's things in a different way. She hear's sound however distorted! BUT THATS NOT THE POINT! Shes excellent! ( no need for the AND part). Rant over.
Thank you for posting this excellent documentary! As a favor to those who appreciate your doing so, maybe you could remove some of the offensive comments?!
thats what i was saying Lehmann108. she is amazing, but the Def aspect always overrides peoples ability to hear how good she is. so if you show Glennie to your mom, don't tell mum she's def until mother says "wow, that's really amazing"
I need to learn how to lip read :( I play Piano and am going deaf in both ears too, but one ear is still ok for now with hearing aids, while the other is completely useless. I need to learn sign language too, but I'm too lazy to bother.
Look at what Evelyn has achieved not to mention Beethoven or Mozart I can not remember which one went deaf. If you do not learn to lip read or at least sign language your world is going to become very small.
@pepsico8 you dont make any sense. PROFOUNDLY DEAF is not totally deaf. you've met her 'upseen' times, i mean what does upseen fucking mean. get a grip

🙌 to this incredible lady ❤
HOW DID SHE DO HER HAIR, IT'S SO BEAUTIFUL

Biggest inspiration
It's Ney Rosauro's Concerto for marimba and string orchestra. It's reaaally fun and beautiful to play.
Wow, she is amazing! I've just found myself a new musical heroine :D
Always awesome! Watch Sound and Fury (a little disturbing for some!?)
Ruth Underwood who played for Frank Zappa I believe had very similar training. But that would be something to hear especially the way she did "St Alphonso's Pancake Breakfast". After the song "Don't Eat The Yellow Snow"
Amazing stay blessed Amen

What is the name of the song she play's at the end?
Great!
Very nice sound
love this vedio
2) For some people surprised Evelyn's youth, but perhaps not surprising even his professional capacity but does not have 29 years?

Imagine this: Evelyn Glennie and Ruth Underwood playing together
YES!!!
Imagine her playing with Zappa if she were older.

She looks a lot like Kate Bush or am I wrong?

She was on Sesame Street with Oscar the Grouch's Trash Band
You are Special. x O Who could I let you know. I cant move to let you know to play music with you as sidekick so you know.
Thank you for posting this excellent documentary! As a favor to those who appreciate your doing so, maybe you could remove some of the offensive comments?!
You still there on yt after 11 years?
thats what i was saying Lehmann108. she is amazing, but the Def aspect always overrides peoples ability to hear how good she is. so if you show Glennie to your mom, don't tell mum she's def until mother says "wow, that's really amazing"
Girl's got some mean chops!
Ah, I disagree, she's a pretty good percussionist regardless of her hearing or not hearing.
really none of it matters at all.... only her music matters.....
in a video she says that she read the lips of the people :)
The Daredevil of music.
Who is here of 9C 🤣
Yes i am from 9d
Sounds like the Miraculous Mandarin during the intro.
@macaroni24464 She can hear the vibrations in the music for one thing.
How does she hear the people talking to her?
bhavvv by reading there lips
I thought she was deaf. so how can she talk to the people. Can she read lips or was he using sign language
she reads lips. and she lost her hearing as a kid, so she has been able to speak naturally.
She Reads thier lips
I was sent by vkgoeswild.
I need to learn how to lip read :(
I play Piano and am going deaf in both ears too, but one ear is still ok for now with hearing aids, while the other is completely useless.
