I have gen 3 jdm 3gste that works fine in my 91 turbo mr2 but it has a bad transmission so I purchased another mr2 turbo tranny with a quaffe LSD. Should I stay with the gen3 and rebuild it for more power or go 2gr turbo? I don't want to install the tranny twice by installing it on the 3sgte to get it running to then later decide I want a 2gr and then have to take the transmission off and on again .twice. I'm having a hard time deciding to stay gen 3 or go 2gr any advice? I am more drawn to 2gr sounding better , it's aV6 and more readily available and affordable . 3gste is older but with upgrades and a rebuild and can do just as good. So idk .
Hey Man. Honestly if the budget allows and you can go 2gr turbo you will have a capable monster in your hands. At the end it comes down to budget and your goal/use of the car. I personally would go 2gr turbo or 2gr na if I had engine issues with the gen3. Swapping the tranny is fairly easy with the engine out so that’s the easiest fix now.
Keep in mind when you say the 2GR is more ‘affordable’ that’s just the cost of the engine. A 2GR swap needs a lot of expensive things a 3SGTE swap doesn’t: custom motor mounts, custom exhaust, drive-by-wire throttle/accelerator pedal, etc. Ryan can correct me if I’m wrong, but in the end, a 2GR swap, especially a turbo, is going to cost more than any 3SGTE swap.

@@grimsonThe 2gr swap is definitely more expensive. I have $9k invested in the engine and parts so far to get it ready to drop in.
