I notice the attitude of “no lightsabers = not Star Wars” a lot among younger fans who grew up in a time when Star Wars had become oversaturated with Jedi and the Force. For those of us who remember a time when there was only the first movie, and the Jedi were all but extinct, it’s always been about more than that.
I'm part of the demographic who grew up with the prequels, but I've never really liked those movies. The OT was always more interesting to watch because I really liked underdog stories.

The problem is now that every show, whether it features jedi or not, is increasingly more terrible. Andor was not only the exception to the rule but showed tou didn't need to have jedi to actually be well made
I was born in the early 2000s. I grew up watching the OT and the prequels and I loved them, except Phantom Menace, which was just alright to me. I also grew up watching the Clone Wars (2003) and the Clone Wars (2008). I really liked both of them, but one episode scared me as a child in the 2003 series. I never really watched Rebels until last year and I've watched all of the recent Star Wars Disney shows. Out of all of them, Andor has been my favorite. I've also been enjoying the Bad Batch too. My personal favorite Star Wars movie is Rogue One. Andor captivated me more then anything in Star Wars, aside from the 2008 Clone Wars series and even then it doesn't even feel on the same level as Andor. I really loved how much worldbuilding they did for these planets. I loved how the Empire was actually fucking competent at their job. I loved all of these new and/or returning characters and seeing what life was like for them under the Empire. I especially loved the look into the inner workings of the Empire and how it maintains so much control over the galaxy. It was just so good man.
I love how you basically had to explain the rule of Alien and Jaws to Robot Head. The less you see, the more impact the monster has. In this case, the more Andor type stuff, the more the lightsaber becomes special.
Hell yeah. I want jedi and lightsabers to be special again. Not everyone suddenly can use force and pop up lightsabers out of frickin nowhere! I want jedi characters to be those who are actually revered, wise, respectable
one of the main points of the OT and i guess the sequels is the fact that the jedi are literally almost dead, a jedi in that time period would be something more of a legend at that point, something you wouldve only heard of, it would be really stupid to try to shove in jedi like in the prequels.
I won't stand for anyone badmouthing the Clone Wars miniseries. It is Genndy Tartakovsky's best work, IMO. But yeah, Star Wars should have ended with Revenge of the Sith.
People exactly like robot head will be complaining thirty years in the future about how people don't take risks anymore like we did thirty years ago, and use andor as an example. If any of the stories robot head grew up with loving were released today, he would hate them too . He doesn't realize the reason he likes stories isn't because he has any kind of taste, but because he grew up with them. That's it. He'll never experience that wonder again. He'd be doing himself a great favor if he looked inside of himself, developed actual media literacy skills, and actually understood why he likes anything

Andor absolutely has no equal in the Star Wars universe when it comes to casting, writing, directing and acting. If Obi-wan had received half the quality of Andor, it would have broken the internet. I was so looking forward to Obi-wan ruling....what we got instead was some little girl running in the woods and making grown men look stupid. I had no intention of watching Andor. I was bored one day and decided to give it a chance. I have now watched the entire season 5 times. The writing is absolutely devine.

I remember seeing Robot Head's thumbnail before watching Andor with a buddy on the weekends. I got preemptively nervous and disappointed that it would be bad, but refused to watch the review before seeing it first. Then I watched it in constant anticipation that something would happen that just ruined it, but that moment never came. It was just good. So I watched his review and realized that he basically just wanted more space wizards, and was very disappointed in him for poisoning my feed with a bad take.

This is such a good video and I'm thankful you made it. Andor is such a bright spot in the sea of blunders Disney spewed out. And for that Robo guy to (poorly) sum the show up as bad shows how some Star Wars fans simply can't grow up.

He has talked a lot of sense in the past, especially about the abominable Rey films. But it seems to have driven him a bit crazy. Now he's just knee-jerk hate for *_anything_* that's Disney SW. Confronted with something as brilliant as _Andor,_ he cannot help himself, he still has to condemn it, maybe to pander to his audience.
Actually, I do think Andor deserves a Season 2 to link it directly to Rogue One. Doesn't need anymore seasons after this. A trilogy of Andor Season One and Two + Rogue One would be an incredible watch.

I know what you mean. They've finished filming now, and while I am excited to see more, there will always be that niggling feeling in the back of my head: what if it's not as good as season one? The fact they cut Andor to only be two seasons when Gilroy and his team were expecting at least three worries me. It also makes me wonder how much other meddling the higher ups have done to season two. I hold hope, Gilroy has proved himself quite competent and I trust him to deliver the best production he can.

For years watching videos explaining the sequel trilogy was bad was a fun past time But then those same people who did that went after Andor It became obvious they were just grifting

I remember when that video came out by Robothead when Andor was out... how they were not giving the show a proper chance but was just hating everything Star Wars on principle and making up bs arguments to be mad about. Robothead is as far as I am concerned, part of a group of channels that think alike who are very anti-woke and will crap all over a show for being woke and if the collective channels decided to hate a show in advance, they will make videos in that vein... some people eventually found Andor quite good but they were constantly torn to hate on it because their fans want to hate Disney Star Wars no matter what
I was watching Andor with my brother and we were bored on the first episode. Then we continued it at some point and by the end it was genuinely our favorite star wars show.
I absolutely agree. I was stunned by how much I disagreed with so much of what he said. I spent an hour just pausing and complaining about the video on my own, so I'll not be watching much of this video cuz I'll probably just be saying "exactly" a lot to this video, but I'm glad someone responded. Wish I had filmed me watching his video because I was having a meltdown and eating very forensic. he says that the praise of Andor isn't proper when it's his criticism that is so so much more.
I liken the criticisms of Andor about tone or "not feeling like Star Wars" to someone who has only ever eaten junk food tasting quality cuisine for the first time. Their taste buds are so denuded of any subtlety that they think the artificial flavor is the real thing and that the real is actually crap. I liked the prequels to a degree when they came out because I was a tween-teen when those came around. Those movies have litanies of issues with regards to execution that have been pounded into atomic matter at this point, but I do have a bit of a nostalgic blind spot for them because of my age (and the fact that they were intended to be a part of the Skywalker saga). Like them or loathe them, they are part of the grand narrative. Andor blows those movies out of the water in terms of execution and craft. It isn't arguable. The casting was perfectly done in Andor and everyone feels like they belong. Robot Head's criticisms aren't even critiques, they're a bandwagon fallacy hiding in plain sight. "You guys didn't like TLJ and my sloppy attempt to stitch this show to it must mean its bad." This is a child's attempt to justify their bad behavior (or in this case, a complete lack of taste). I doubt he even watched the show beyond having it on as background noise. The level of depth given to simple side characters in this show was deeper than many of the main characters in the prequel/sequel trilogies. That's a damning indictment on Lucasfilm and an even more glaring omission on Robot Head's part to not mention this. Everything else on top of that is just gravy in my opinion. The practical sets, the proper emotional didplays, actually believable motivations, consequences to actions and a well thought out plot made Andor a treat. I bought this show on Blu-Ray and I'd encourage everyone to buy it on physical media just so it cannot be memory-holed by spiteful people with too much power in the film industry. I suppose the people that criticize Andor more strongly for not feeling Star Wars, were kids first exposed to Star Wars in prequels. Lightsabers and the force were much more sparse and seldom used in the OT also, i spent my teen years playing Star Wars games where the force and Jedi didn't play any part. XWing, Tie Fighter, Dark Forces, Rebel Assault 1 and 2, etc. It was only with the prequels that Jedis started becoming really super humans, with ultra fast reflexes, all those spins, etc, etc
I was introduced to SW with prequels, Phantom Menacy before the original trilogy, and have fond memories of it. But I grew up to understand its shortcomings, as well as see key jangling memberberries of Disney Wars for what it is, a fig leaf to disguise utter lack of talent and creativity by people in charge of the franchise. Andor is an anomaly, all things considered. It's too good for people raised on Disney slop. So I don't think prequels are to blame here. It's just that a lot of people have no taste or appreciation for art and genuinely good storytelling. Shortening attention span doesn't help either
literally after playing the swtor MMO and going every class story made enjoy the lore and the workings of the whole SW universe. Imperial agent is one of my favorite story lines of that MMO.
There was a period where I was watching robot, head videos and enjoying them. He didn’t always hit but I thought he was funny. However, his Andor review is literally insane. Baffling, ridiculous unwatchable un mitigated nonsense.
I like Robot head I feel like he is stuck because his audience wants to see negative takes against new media while they have some points here and there you miss good writing like Andor this is not TLJ but when you want to see bad you will find it I hope your video gets more traction you seem entertaining easy to listen to and quite funny.

I don’t know why people are so confused about this. Back in the day, families had ONE screen at home. Big movies were events for the whole family. They tended to be a stir of many things, adventure, mystery, romance, a bit of horror, something to laugh. When George Lucas made Star Wars, the typical movies his friends were making, were serious auteur films, often bleak and socially critical. Hence, he sold his escapist Flash Gordon knockoff (I write this with affection) as a film for “six year’ olds”. Cowboys, Pew Pew in Space! But his own statements should be taken with a lot of salt, since he also says he was inspired by the Vietnam War, obviously a lot of pulp and old fashioned serial adventure (like Flash Gordon). In context, he could only have meant it in contrast with Kubrick or Coppola movies and the likes, since he was really looking to the retro film past of Golden Age Hollywood and before that, and these old monumenal films weren’t intended for kids, but for the parents (the husband first) and then their kids. You made a kid-friendly enough film so they nag their parents, but it had to appeal to the adults too. It’s also not difficult to see. The droids in a New Hope are outright slaves, slave collar, Jawa slave traders, slave market scene and not allowed in bars, and all. The Tantive is boarded like an old fashioned ship. The soundtrack is really Korngold. This is a romantic era franchise in spirit, where pink and blue aisles didn’t exist. So even “child friendly” meant something else when George grew up. Lone Ranger, shooting indians and the likes. But just watch the goddam films: The Empire are brutal British colonialists, with a blend of Nazi and Imperal Japan. There’s a genocide. Of course this tone runs through canon. There is dismemberment, torture and lots of old fashioned horror sprinkled all over the movies, alone. George Lucas hired british horror actors, like Peter Cushing. I find it strange that apparently people today don’t pick up on that vibe. This is a universe where a fat sultan enjoys watching a victim getting maimed and eaten by a creature. Canon also includes lobotomised and “de-cranialised” people sold as servants. There are the B’Omarr monks who have their brains transplanted into spider-droids that roam Jabba’s Palace. You need not know this if you actually watched any OT film: you would see the often harsh, eerie and occasionally gruesome stuff. The aliens alone used to be nightmare muppets with a few comical ones, like Max Reebo. Star Wars is also very clearly a colonial setting, including all the heinous stuff. Or especially so, because that makes for a dangerous and exciting universe. You showed Indiana Jones, and it is indeed very similar to Star Wars, adventure, mystery, romance, comedy and horror in one retro package (also by George Lucas). When Patrick Willems declared (without further context) that it’s kid-friendly franchise, he must have suffered a stroke that day. Otherwise he is perceptive and well-informed, unlike RobotHead, who really came out as an idiot. Willems would know that the rules of “kid friendly” totally changed once kids had their own TV, or now their own devices, Reagan deregulated TV (so that toy makers produced cartoons), and marketing came up with finely honed target demographics. And he would know that Star Wars was deliberately “retro” even when Lucas made it. Here is why Andor is often said to not feel Star Warsy: Disney and Filoni kept only the adventure, and superficial “assets” like Jedi, Stormtroopers etc. from Star Wars. Andor on the other hand is full-on like the OT, but doesn’t have Jedi and Stormtroopers, and replaced adventure for long-form TV spy thriller, though even in that format, tracks adventures better than Disney Star Wars does, minus the pacing. But because it “misses” the few ingredients that Disney/Filoni heavily rely on, people don’t recognise it as Star Wars anymore. That’s very unfortunate, and one can only hope this rot isn’t too widespread among the decision makers at Disney and Lucasfilm. In other words, had Gilroy decided for more serial adventure, it would almost fit seamlessly into the Original Trilogy. Almost, because he also occasionally veers too much into 1980 sci-fi, which Lucas painstakenly avoided to do, why he wanted orchestral music etc. There‘s a bit too much neon, plastic clothes, and the synthesizer soundtrack doesn‘t fit. That‘s where RobotHead is not entirely wrong.
Well put. I had kind of liked Robot Head before. When I saw this video, I gave up on him. I can take having a different opinion with someone; but when their take is so immature and unintelligent, I lose respect for the person. To top it all off, his smug self-righteousness seals it. When you're that confident, you have to really be talking about something that is unquestionable and objective. When something is more subjective and closer to opinion, you need to have some sense of modesty and recognition that it might not be everyone's take. But with Robot Head, especially considering his attitude in his comment section, he truly believes anyone who doesn't share his unsophisticated view is an idiot.
Also it’s more plausible for the weapons of the future to more resemble the kalashnikov platform as the gas-operated, rotating bolt (Long Stroke Gas Piston) of the rifle has a design which offers significantly more flexibility than an armalite rifle which has extremely tight clearances that do not allow for much innovation from a home based hobbyist, many technological developments (specifically in regards to firearms) have been demonstrated by the home based gunsmiths not huge arms dealers. This is because those guys don’t have the time it takes to both make money and innovate more great ideas when they presumably already had one that worked. Because the kalashnikov has flexibility in operation, there are many different kinds of blowback actions that are possible, for example the ak-94 fucking amazing and we still don’t fully understand how it works(at least here in the states) as the prints and unavailable(to my knowledge) if you know what you’re doing even a little and read prints, then Kalashnikovs are simple machines that most people could and should build, the don’t require all the fancy equipment, mostly just leverage, pressure, and friction with some slotted strut pieces and you can make yourself a nice little ak shop, so it’s highly likely that they will be the gun of the future in my opinion.
every single time, without fail, i hear from someone saying that Andor was bad or that they just couldn't get into it, those people have never seen past episode 4 which is like watching the first 20 minutes of a movie and coming to a conclusion about it.
Honestly, I respect people who just don't enjoy andor. I don't think it's fair to expect people to watch six hours of stuff to figure out whether they'll like something. Just don't go making a video about it with any kind of authority to an audience.
I'm still confused how break bad fans like Gary from nerd rigid didn't enjoy Andor when they are quite similar in appeal yet breaking bad is slower in many parts.
@@wingsoffreedom3589 idk what these people are like so I could be completely off base here, but I remember when breaking bad first aired, a lot of people related to Walt in the beginning. By the time you realize he's a huge monster (or don't realize), you were already invested. From a certain perspective, Walt was a character taking agency and gaining power, which also serves as an individualist power fantasy Andor is a character who was ripped+rescued away from his indigenous home at a young age, and lived a childhood of constant and severe loss. Might seem more sympathetic from the outside, but the way the show framed it was a lot more realistic and less romanticized. So basically, harder to relate to if you haven't experienced some version of that already. He's relatable to a very VERY different audience. Andor is also the antithesis of the great man trope Walt wanted to become. Andor is about being part of something greater, collective action, and putting aside your own dreams so future versions of yourself won't have to go through what you did. Sounds nice when I frame it like that, but the show also illustrates how brutal and dark that can actually be. Especially when we know where Cass is going. It's empowering to a very different audience, again. Cassian isn't the one giving speeches or being the main threat. He's the guy in other people's ear inspiring them to give the speeches. All of this to say--you don't need to relate to the character to enjoy the show, but if the reason you liked breaking bad was because Walt felt relatable, that might be visibly absent here.

But that also applies to Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul so they are either inaccurate in describing their taste or they don't want to give andor a chance because theycsee star wars through one lense with no room for variation. Actually just noticed one thing: Only plot “hole” is that when his mother tells him to stop looking for his sister because it’s a dead end because there were no survivors, he maybe could have responded saying 1) he had a lead and/or 2) at least somebody survived potentially - like any sort of lead sounds like it would have been very important for Andor to discover and something he might have shared with his mother

to be honest I'd argue Andor is deviating quite a bit from the modern conception of Star Wars, I'd just argue that's not a bad thing, especially not since it deviates far less from the OT or Prequels than the modern *_conception_* of Star Wars. One thing to note is that Sci-Fi is more of a descriptor of setting whereas Fantasy is more of a descriptor of tone and narrative structure. The OT was, in terms of it's narrative and tone, a Fantasy first and foremost. The swords were made of laserz, but it did follow a farm boy whose family was killed by raiders in a far off desert taken in by an older mentor, told that he has special powers, trained in the ways of those mystical powers to save a princess and take down an evil empire. That is, at it's core, a very by-the-book generic Fantasy story. You can replace all of the sci-fi elements of Star Wars with equivalent Fantasy elements and lose very little. (the only thing that I can't imagine having a very neat replacement is the Death Star, but that's just because the concept of a super weapon isn't very Fantasy itself, Fantasy stories typically have other neguffins. With that said, super weapons *_do_* still exist in some form within Fantasies, they're just not quite as conventional. Think the Ring, rather than the Death Star. Both are sort of 'super weapons' and serve a similar narrative purpose as a neguffin, they just *_feel_* very different. Also, for what it's worth, 'neguffin' is just something I made up on the spot to describe the negative version of a mcguffin which is functionally what the Death Star and One Ring both are. They aren't really mcguffins since the protagonists don't want them and want to destroy them, but the narrative is still centered around them as important objects) With that said, just because one entry follows the Fantasy formula doesn't mean the entire series is dictated by it. Star Wars *_is_* still a Sci-Fi universe, and while the core story beats of the OT may have been foundationally Fantasy, that doesn't mean you can just treat the entire series *_as_* a Fantasy universe. The OT's tone may have generally been uplifting and positive, but it wasn't 2023 'family friendly', it was 1970s 'family friendly'. As in, Watership Down qualifies. In fact, Watership down was released in 1978 compared to A New Hope's 1977, but whereas Watership down got a U (universal audiences, basically a G) A New Hope was actually split between G and PG, ultimately landing on PG. In other words the defining movie of the entire series was considered less suitable for children than Watership down. Putting aside the argument of whether it's better to protect children from more adult themes or attempting to do that just ill-prepares them for the real world, the point I'm making is that Star Wars was 'family friendly' in the 1970s, not 2020s. We're talking a half century difference in sensibilities and, for better or worse, the modern notion of 'family friendly' is *_far_* more restrictive. Andor is, IMO, just a tinge darker than the OT, and superficially is likely even more 'family friendly'. (what with Leia literally being sold as a slave) Realistically, a kid watching the torture scene may not even understand what's happening (at least not fully) but it's hard to misinterpret "sorry kid your family was murdered". Andor is basically what the prequels were trying to be but ultimately failed to execute effectively. The prequels themselves are horribly flawed movies, but when people talk about Darth Vader, everyone thinks Anakin Skywalker. (and, for the record, I'm referring to character, not just name. In the OT we did learn Darth Vader was Luke's father and everything, but we never really knew *_who_* he was.) For as flawed as the movies themselves were their story is quintessientally Star Wars and that's why many people still greatly appreciate them, even if they don't really understand why and often use piss arguments in an attempt to rationalize it. The prequels were trying to be a darker story where the narrative is not one of triumph but of defeat, and ultimately things don't work out. The point isn't hoping that things work out well, because we know they don't, it's following the people and watching it unfold. Even if things ultimately don't work out, we can follow the characters, admire their dedication, appreciate their circumstances, etc; Andor is trying to do exactly that. We know how it ends, he dies on an irrelevant planet all in service of a minor victory that sees him just as another pawn in someone else's larger story, but we can still follow the journey and appreciate it along the way. The difference is that Andor's darker tone is accepted and embraced fully, rather than needing superficial 'family friendly' entertainment like Jar Jar. (although a Darth Jar Jar twist or something similar might have actually worked, or at least saved things a little) Andor is closer than the OT in terms of tone than modern 'Star Wars' is, and it's basically exactly what the prequels were trying, and failed, to be. The only truly notable difference between Andor and the OT to me is that the OT, owing in large part to it's more conventional Fantasy narrative, largely coloured within the moral lines. The was some deviation and moral depth, but ultimately the right answer was "no matter what trust your family, even if all seems lost there is always good in people that will follow through". While that works within the narrative that was constructed, it's still very much painting in the moral lines. In contrast Andor is much more open to the idea that "No, fucking seriously, this is war, if you don't do morally dubious actions because *_you_* want to die with clean hands that makes you far more guilty than you realize." Whereas the OT says "there is good in everyone, Luke saved the day by believing in his father", Andor says "and the only reason the day was ever could be saved was because of the countless men before him who died without that idealism". I think this is the part most people are really stuck up on, why it doesn't 'feel' Star Wars, but this moral nuance *_was_* always a part of the Star Wars story, it just wasn't the OT narrative. Obi-wan is seen as a guiding moral figure, teaching Luke and acting as his gateway to his calling, and he openly says "yeah, you gotta kill your father, I lied to you because I knew if I didn't you wouldn't be willing to." In other words, while Luke's story is built on his idealism and it works out, the seeds of that moral nuance has always been planted at the core of the story. (and, again, it's something the prequels explored quite heavily with the supposedly virtuous Jedi Order preventing Anakin from rescuing his mother and ultimately leading to the creation of Darth Vader.) Andor may not 'feel like Star Wars' but at the end of the day that's because it's not trying to; it's trying to be what Star Wars was to become, not just what the OT already was. Ever since the prequels and their poor execution Star Wars has been locked in limbo around the OT, never wanting to move forward with more adult themes because 'well that's what the prequels tried to do and look how that turned out' but what people aren't recognizing is that the prequels' stories thrived despite the prequels themselves failing. Luke was always an idealist, and that was the point. The OT recognized that his idealism was in some ways a virtue but Star Wars wasn't about Luke, it was about Anakin. The OT follows Luke but the overarching narrative is about Anakin's origins, Anakin's potential, Anakin's manipulation, Anakin's Fall, and, with his son, Anakin's ultimate redeption and fulfillment of the 'Chosen One' prophecy. (cough cough until Rey cough) Luke's vehement idealism was always the catalyst to Anakin's redemption, and Anakin's story is far less morally simple. The movies of the OT may have been about Luke, but the overarching narrative of Star Wars as a whole is Anakin's story; 1-3 tell Anakin's Tragedy, and 4-6 tell Anakin's Redemption. (again, we're just ignoring the sequels) People like to focus on the OT since it was better executed, but the tragedy has always been just as (if not more) important as the redemption. *_long looong maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan_*

It was about a rebel leader who had his mind wiped by the evil Galactic Federation (using a pair of headphones!) ... and then, to discredit him fully, was tried for sexual child abuse in a court of law, where the AI judge was fed false evidence, and found him Guilty. His sentence being Life in prison on the penal colony of Cygnus Alpha. (sound familiar?) This went out on BBC1 - the whole nation - at 7:30pm on Mondays Star Trek went out on Thursdays ... but you would only ever see us playing at Blakes 7 in the playground, we loved it! Yes, we had no idea what a pedo was ... but the actors were so good, that we wanted to 'be' them I don't buy this "Andor is Star Wars for adults" rubbish ... my 7-year-old self would have loved this even more than Blakes 7! Because - even though there were only 2 shoot-outs in every 1 hour episode (sometimes - but all filmed in superb real-life locations, like 'Aldhani') ... we identified with the characters, and the way they bitched at each other! Even though we didn't understand most of what they were saying. We couldn't care less - we loved the characters and re-enacted them at playtime on Tuesday morning every week ...
Yeah, I totally get that. I got exposed to Call of duty world at war at a really young age (probably shouldn't have, lol) and despite me not really understanding a lot of the conflicts or language used, I still had a blast because the game was fun as hell. Me, my brother, my cousins and a all my friends who were invited for weekend stays at my place would play it the entire weekend, especially because of the zombies mode.
The only available criticisms of the show seem to be the following: - “feeling” of slowness in first 3-episode arc - lack of a fantasy Star Wars feeling Most of this is only a criticism in comparison to other Star Wars media, which itself needs to be interrogated (as if all Star Wars media is that of quality or even fast pace - major complaint of Phantom Menace was that it was slow, though I don’t think that’s the problem with PM) As for slowness, I think that’s just because the first 3-episode arc itself serves as a pilot for plot and character direction It’s not that it’s slow per se, but that it’s a long form introduction to a plot direction at the same time as we’re still learning who Andor is, and because Andor himself is also highly dynamic during what might normally serve as an introductory whole… I.e., our pilot is long form and the character is dynamic actors a long form pilot. It is still very gripping and I think the pacing is perfect, but I think this is part of why it feels “slow” given my expectations. It may also be that it seems perfect in hindsight, or that I recognize its perfection in hindsight The rewatch value is amazing

I find it so hilarious that people who were once too embarassed to come out to try to defend the prequels now feel empowered to declare that those movies are masterpieces because they are comparitively ao much better than the sequels. I hate to break it to you guys, but the sequels being awful doesn't actually make the prequels better. The only thing that has really changed is that many people once thought that the prequels were as low as Star Wars could sink (we all agreed and still agree to pretend that the Holiday Special never happened), and then Disney came along and proved that notion woefully naive. The prequels are still _pretty bad_ in a lot of ways. I think the kindest interpretation I have heard that is still realistic is that the prequels have a lot of really good ideas and even some excellent, legendary moments in them, but they are also filled with a lot of baffling decisions, really important moments that are just flat-out executed _badly,_ and an overall failure to bring both the trilogy as well as the individual movies together in a way that is meaningfully consistent and coherent. Epiaodes 1 and 2 both have problems with lacking focus, episode 1 more so, IME. All of these movies suffer from attrocious dialog accross the board that is only ever saved by some actors being able to compensate by being 6 foot, party-sized ham sandwiches. Unfortunately for both the movie as well as some actors' careers, not every character _could_ be played that way and so the dialog can't help but to regularly shit in the pants of everyone unlucky enough to be on screen at the time. The CGI is frequently uncanny and poorly composited, especially when mixed with live-action footage. There are some pretty serious plot holes and other issues with the writing, even if the _basic_ story outline is pretty solid. I feel like the sequels lack any focus or clarity, however. And with the hindsight of how bad Star Wars can be without any sort of unified visiom behind it, I think that it does become obvious that this is not something that is a problem with the prequels. I think the prequels _do_ still have a unified vision pushing them forwards, however I think that perhaps that vision was a little blurry and that George Lucas may have needed to get his eyes checked. This being the case does not change the fact that these complaints about the prequels, as well as many others I didnt mention, are all totally valid. Mr. Plinkett's original take-downs of these movies arent any less correct just because Disney managed to come along and pump out _waaay_ worse movies. That's not how this works. Just because the sequels were an F doesn't suddenly mean that the prequels get bumped from a C- up to a B+. Even if it made any sense to do so, you can't grade on a curve, here, because the OT already fucked the rest of the class by getting a solid A/ A+. We have _seen_ how good Star Wars _can_ be, and we shouldn't start pretending that sub-par content is suddenly a masterpiece just because we've seen how much worse it could be. I _want_ Star Wars to hit those same highs again, and I think that the capability is _absolutely_ there. Andor proves that it's possible. If we resign ourselves to accepting that the prequels are just as good as the OT, then we are setting the bar lower than we know the franchise is capable of achieving, and that's just a crying fucking shame. Honestly, I have too much faith and optimism to just accept that it's not creatively possible to do any better. I don't buy it. Something obviously needs to change within Lucas Films and Disney to make sure they get the right people in the right creative positions and that they start greenlighting the right kinds of projects while shutting down the wrong ones, but these aren't _impossible,_ they're just _really hard_ to get them to do.
I think I tried watching a Robot Head video once where he suggested "fixing" Force Awakens by having Rey be an abandoned jedi padawan and I just stopped watching since I'm not of the belief that "More lightsabers and jedi = better content" I wonder if General Grievous is his favourite character

The minute I heard you kick the Dead horse that deserves every kick it gets known as TLJ I knew this was gonna be good. For A minute their I thought you were just one of those Disnoid that hate channels that criticize their garbage star wars fanfiction. As for Robot head his early videos on the choreography in TLJ were great but his content was only so good because of how bad TLJ is, it's so bad that a market for crapping on it threw a wide net that accepted anyone willing to join in on destroying that cinematic tumor. His Andor video is the last thing I saw from him before never looking at his content again. I am also a prequel fan but I also no those films are objectively garbage but the prequel era brought so much rich world building to star wars I enjoy those film despite how bad they are. Also Andor is the best live action star wars since the OT with the best star wars content still being some of the EU novels like the Bane trilogy or thrown trilogy.
Doubtful anyone will ever see this but this is my favorite piece of star wars film/show that has come from disney. It certainly has its flaws, it isnt perfect, but its not bad either. While I liked it I won't say I'm sad to hear it will only have 2 seasons, Andor is a character from a movie I personally dont think needed to be made (rogue one essentially only exists to explain how the rebels got the death star blueprints which i dont believe needed explaining). My biggest complaint is that I'm kinda tired of seeing the same 3 eras on screen, as though to films and shows the only eras of starwars that exist are the prequels, Ot, and sequels... can we have something other than that?

I don't think that's necessary true. Exposure through bigger channels often ends up being beneficial in terms of views. If it's just some petty drama and not something major to entirely sink them, like past criminal history or ongoing controversy of similar scale.
Andor is a piece of art and anyone who says otherwise is willfully shooting themselves in the foot. SW isn't a genre, it’s a universe and many different genres, themes, characters, and stories have yet to be discovered in that universe. If someone wants the 'feel' of the old movies there is good news, the old movies still exist, so literally go watch them again. As horrendous as some of the Last Jedi was I have grown to appreciate that Rian was also trying to make something new, his execution in some of that 'newness' was very questionable but the stuff that worked really worked. This misguided unconscious consensus of SW fans that we need to ‘recapture’ those feelings from the first films has led to an over saturation of bad SW trying to live up to something it shouldn’t even need to. Every SW project doesn’t need the same themes, characters, and feeling as the OG trilogy, that'd get repetitive and very boring. Most new projects have virtually become parodies of the source material where nothing is left but references cameos, and generic mic-drop lines that fit in any situation. I love Andor not just because it is full of heart, nuance, and complex storytelling in a thematically dark setting but also because of what it represents: innovation of SW and a new hope that future SW projects don't have to be self referential, sloppily written, poorly executed, mass produced projects rather than pieces of art that stand on their own merit. Disneys and the fans problem has been thinking that SW is a genre and everything must fit into very confined rules. If someone thinks Andor is too boring they need to consider spending less time feeding their dopamine receptors with stuff like Tik Tok and take the time to pay attention to what’s happening between action sequences. They’ll realize that that there is a lot of nuance and character work happening, it is a masterclass of writing and direction. If someone thinks Andor doesn't feel like SW they need to reframe how they understand the IP, it is not a genre of itself. The themes, characters, settings, sounds, textures, virtually everything is straight out of the Lucas doctrine and what story he was trying to tell. If someone thinks Andor stands shoulder to shoulder on equal footing as Obi Wan, Ahsoka, or Boba Fett they need to try and summarize one of those shows and try to summarize Andor, the difficulty to do so for Andor succinctly is indicative of the complex level of detail and care. Andor is lightyears ahead of those shows in virtually every cinema or storytelling criteria. Anyone who loves this show should be promoting it and recommending it to everyone they know. Systems either change or die and there is only one way out of this SW slump of bad media.
Mando was written to feel like a serial you saw at a theater back in the days of Tom mix serials. That went over so many people's heads. Why can't you just watch and enjoy? My wife and I lived it. It was great fun. There were things that confused us, but we wanted to enjoy it. And did. Whining about Star wars for views and likes is f'ing lame.

I notice the attitude of “no lightsabers = not Star Wars” a lot among younger fans who grew up in a time when Star Wars had become oversaturated with Jedi and the Force. For those of us who remember a time when there was only the first movie, and the Jedi were all but extinct, it’s always been about more than that.
I'm part of the demographic who grew up with the prequels, but I've never really liked those movies. The OT was always more interesting to watch because I really liked underdog stories.

Andor understands the core of what Star Wars is infinitely more than anything else from Disney.
I was born in the early 2000s. I grew up watching the OT and the prequels and I loved them, except Phantom Menace, which was just alright to me. I also grew up watching the Clone Wars (2003) and the Clone Wars (2008). I really liked both of them, but one episode scared me as a child in the 2003 series. I never really watched Rebels until last year and I've watched all of the recent Star Wars Disney shows. Out of all of them, Andor has been my favorite. I've also been enjoying the Bad Batch too. My personal favorite Star Wars movie is Rogue One.
Andor captivated me more then anything in Star Wars, aside from the 2008 Clone Wars series and even then it doesn't even feel on the same level as Andor. I really loved how much worldbuilding they did for these planets. I loved how the Empire was actually fucking competent at their job. I loved all of these new and/or returning characters and seeing what life was like for them under the Empire. I especially loved the look into the inner workings of the Empire and how it maintains so much control over the galaxy. It was just so good man.

I love how you basically had to explain the rule of Alien and Jaws to Robot Head. The less you see, the more impact the monster has. In this case, the more Andor type stuff, the more the lightsaber becomes special.

one of the main points of the OT and i guess the sequels is the fact that the jedi are literally almost dead, a jedi in that time period would be something more of a legend at that point, something you wouldve only heard of, it would be really stupid to try to shove in jedi like in the prequels.

Andor absolutely has no equal in the Star Wars universe when it comes to casting, writing, directing and acting. If Obi-wan had received half the quality of Andor, it would have broken the internet. I was so looking forward to Obi-wan ruling....what we got instead was some little girl running in the woods and making grown men look stupid. I had no intention of watching Andor. I was bored one day and decided to give it a chance. I have now watched the entire season 5 times. The writing is absolutely devine.

I remember seeing Robot Head's thumbnail before watching Andor with a buddy on the weekends. I got preemptively nervous and disappointed that it would be bad, but refused to watch the review before seeing it first. Then I watched it in constant anticipation that something would happen that just ruined it, but that moment never came. It was just good. So I watched his review and realized that he basically just wanted more space wizards, and was very disappointed in him for poisoning my feed with a bad take.
Listening to people gush about Andor never gets old, and this defense is one of my favorite videos so far ❤
So many of his criticisms boil down to not understanding what spinoffs are and why people find them interesting.

As for Robot Head, I haven't seen a ton of stuff from him, but from what I've seen, he's not terrible.
He has talked a lot of sense in the past, especially about the abominable Rey films. But it seems to have driven him a bit crazy. Now he's just knee-jerk hate for *_anything_* that's Disney SW. Confronted with something as brilliant as _Andor,_ he cannot help himself, he still has to condemn it, maybe to pander to his audience.
He failed I never watched his content again after his Andor video and I was there when he first started.

I know what you mean. They've finished filming now, and while I am excited to see more, there will always be that niggling feeling in the back of my head: what if it's not as good as season one? The fact they cut Andor to only be two seasons when Gilroy and his team were expecting at least three worries me. It also makes me wonder how much other meddling the higher ups have done to season two. I hold hope, Gilroy has proved himself quite competent and I trust him to deliver the best production he can.

I remember when that video came out by Robothead when Andor was out... how they were not giving the show a proper chance but was just hating everything Star Wars on principle and making up bs arguments to be mad about. Robothead is as far as I am concerned, part of a group of channels that think alike who are very anti-woke and will crap all over a show for being woke and if the collective channels decided to hate a show in advance, they will make videos in that vein... some people eventually found Andor quite good but they were constantly torn to hate on it because their fans want to hate Disney Star Wars no matter what

Wish I had filmed me watching his video because I was having a meltdown and eating very forensic. he says that the praise of Andor isn't proper when it's his criticism that is so so much more.
I liken the criticisms of Andor about tone or "not feeling like Star Wars" to someone who has only ever eaten junk food tasting quality cuisine for the first time. Their taste buds are so denuded of any subtlety that they think the artificial flavor is the real thing and that the real is actually crap. I liked the prequels to a degree when they came out because I was a tween-teen when those came around. Those movies have litanies of issues with regards to execution that have been pounded into atomic matter at this point, but I do have a bit of a nostalgic blind spot for them because of my age (and the fact that they were intended to be a part of the Skywalker saga). Like them or loathe them, they are part of the grand narrative. Andor blows those movies out of the water in terms of execution and craft. It isn't arguable. The casting was perfectly done in Andor and everyone feels like they belong.
Robot Head's criticisms aren't even critiques, they're a bandwagon fallacy hiding in plain sight. "You guys didn't like TLJ and my sloppy attempt to stitch this show to it must mean its bad." This is a child's attempt to justify their bad behavior (or in this case, a complete lack of taste).
I doubt he even watched the show beyond having it on as background noise. The level of depth given to simple side characters in this show was deeper than many of the main characters in the prequel/sequel trilogies. That's a damning indictment on Lucasfilm and an even more glaring omission on Robot Head's part to not mention this. Everything else on top of that is just gravy in my opinion. The practical sets, the proper emotional didplays, actually believable motivations, consequences to actions and a well thought out plot made Andor a treat.
I bought this show on Blu-Ray and I'd encourage everyone to buy it on physical media just so it cannot be memory-holed by spiteful people with too much power in the film industry.

also, i spent my teen years playing Star Wars games where the force and Jedi didn't play any part. XWing, Tie Fighter, Dark Forces, Rebel Assault 1 and 2, etc.
It was only with the prequels that Jedis started becoming really super humans, with ultra fast reflexes, all those spins, etc, etc
I was introduced to SW with prequels, Phantom Menacy before the original trilogy, and have fond memories of it.
But I grew up to understand its shortcomings, as well as see key jangling memberberries of Disney Wars for what it is, a fig leaf to disguise utter lack of talent and creativity by people in charge of the franchise.
Andor is an anomaly, all things considered. It's too good for people raised on Disney slop.
So I don't think prequels are to blame here. It's just that a lot of people have no taste or appreciation for art and genuinely good storytelling. Shortening attention span doesn't help either

Oh man I feel vindicated. I’m also convinced that those who don’t like Andor for completely subjective and superficial reasons don’t know why what they do enjoy is despised.
I don’t know why people are so confused about this. Back in the day, families had ONE screen at home. Big movies were events for the whole family. They tended to be a stir of many things, adventure, mystery, romance, a bit of horror, something to laugh. When George Lucas made Star Wars, the typical movies his friends were making, were serious auteur films, often bleak and socially critical. Hence, he sold his escapist Flash Gordon knockoff (I write this with affection) as a film for “six year’ olds”. Cowboys, Pew Pew in Space! But his own statements should be taken with a lot of salt, since he also says he was inspired by the Vietnam War, obviously a lot of pulp and old fashioned serial adventure (like Flash Gordon). In context, he could only have meant it in contrast with Kubrick or Coppola movies and the likes, since he was really looking to the retro film past of Golden Age Hollywood and before that, and these old monumenal films weren’t intended for kids, but for the parents (the husband first) and then their kids. You made a kid-friendly enough film so they nag their parents, but it had to appeal to the adults too.
It’s also not difficult to see. The droids in a New Hope are outright slaves, slave collar, Jawa slave traders, slave market scene and not allowed in bars, and all. The Tantive is boarded like an old fashioned ship. The soundtrack is really Korngold. This is a romantic era franchise in spirit, where pink and blue aisles didn’t exist. So even “child friendly” meant something else when George grew up. Lone Ranger, shooting indians and the likes.
But just watch the goddam films: The Empire are brutal British colonialists, with a blend of Nazi and Imperal Japan. There’s a genocide. Of course this tone runs through canon. There is dismemberment, torture and lots of old fashioned horror sprinkled all over the movies, alone. George Lucas hired british horror actors, like Peter Cushing. I find it strange that apparently people today don’t pick up on that vibe.
This is a universe where a fat sultan enjoys watching a victim getting maimed and eaten by a creature. Canon also includes lobotomised and “de-cranialised” people sold as servants. There are the B’Omarr monks who have their brains transplanted into spider-droids that roam Jabba’s Palace. You need not know this if you actually watched any OT film: you would see the often harsh, eerie and occasionally gruesome stuff. The aliens alone used to be nightmare muppets with a few comical ones, like Max Reebo. Star Wars is also very clearly a colonial setting, including all the heinous stuff. Or especially so, because that makes for a dangerous and exciting universe. You showed Indiana Jones, and it is indeed very similar to Star Wars, adventure, mystery, romance, comedy and horror in one retro package (also by George Lucas).
When Patrick Willems declared (without further context) that it’s kid-friendly franchise, he must have suffered a stroke that day. Otherwise he is perceptive and well-informed, unlike RobotHead, who really came out as an idiot. Willems would know that the rules of “kid friendly” totally changed once kids had their own TV, or now their own devices, Reagan deregulated TV (so that toy makers produced cartoons), and marketing came up with finely honed target demographics. And he would know that Star Wars was deliberately “retro” even when Lucas made it.
Here is why Andor is often said to not feel Star Warsy: Disney and Filoni kept only the adventure, and superficial “assets” like Jedi, Stormtroopers etc. from Star Wars. Andor on the other hand is full-on like the OT, but doesn’t have Jedi and Stormtroopers, and replaced adventure for long-form TV spy thriller, though even in that format, tracks adventures better than Disney Star Wars does, minus the pacing. But because it “misses” the few ingredients that Disney/Filoni heavily rely on, people don’t recognise it as Star Wars anymore. That’s very unfortunate, and one can only hope this rot isn’t too widespread among the decision makers at Disney and Lucasfilm.
In other words, had Gilroy decided for more serial adventure, it would almost fit seamlessly into the Original Trilogy. Almost, because he also occasionally veers too much into 1980 sci-fi, which Lucas painstakenly avoided to do, why he wanted orchestral music etc. There‘s a bit too much neon, plastic clothes, and the synthesizer soundtrack doesn‘t fit. That‘s where RobotHead is not entirely wrong.

Well put. I had kind of liked Robot Head before. When I saw this video, I gave up on him. I can take having a different opinion with someone; but when their take is so immature and unintelligent, I lose respect for the person. To top it all off, his smug self-righteousness seals it. When you're that confident, you have to really be talking about something that is unquestionable and objective. When something is more subjective and closer to opinion, you need to have some sense of modesty and recognition that it might not be everyone's take. But with Robot Head, especially considering his attitude in his comment section, he truly believes anyone who doesn't share his unsophisticated view is an idiot.

Also it’s more plausible for the weapons of the future to more resemble the kalashnikov platform as the gas-operated, rotating bolt (Long Stroke Gas Piston) of the rifle has a design which offers significantly more flexibility than an armalite rifle which has extremely tight clearances that do not allow for much innovation from a home based hobbyist, many technological developments (specifically in regards to firearms) have been demonstrated by the home based gunsmiths not huge arms dealers. This is because those guys don’t have the time it takes to both make money and innovate more great ideas when they presumably already had one that worked. Because the kalashnikov has flexibility in operation, there are many different kinds of blowback actions that are possible, for example the ak-94 fucking amazing and we still don’t fully understand how it works(at least here in the states) as the prints and unavailable(to my knowledge) if you know what you’re doing even a little and read prints, then Kalashnikovs are simple machines that most people could and should build, the don’t require all the fancy equipment, mostly just leverage, pressure, and friction with some slotted strut pieces and you can make yourself a nice little ak shop, so it’s highly likely that they will be the gun of the future in my opinion.

every single time, without fail, i hear from someone saying that Andor was bad or that they just couldn't get into it, those people have never seen past episode 4 which is like watching the first 20 minutes of a movie and coming to a conclusion about it.
Honestly, I respect people who just don't enjoy andor. I don't think it's fair to expect people to watch six hours of stuff to figure out whether they'll like something.

By the time you realize he's a huge monster (or don't realize), you were already invested. From a certain perspective, Walt was a character taking agency and gaining power, which also serves as an individualist power fantasy
Andor is a character who was ripped+rescued away from his indigenous home at a young age, and lived a childhood of constant and severe loss. Might seem more sympathetic from the outside, but the way the show framed it was a lot more realistic and less romanticized. So basically, harder to relate to if you haven't experienced some version of that already. He's relatable to a very VERY different audience. Andor is also the antithesis of the great man trope Walt wanted to become.
Andor is about being part of something greater, collective action, and putting aside your own dreams so future versions of yourself won't have to go through what you did. Sounds nice when I frame it like that, but the show also illustrates how brutal and dark that can actually be. Especially when we know where Cass is going. It's empowering to a very different audience, again.
Cassian isn't the one giving speeches or being the main threat. He's the guy in other people's ear inspiring them to give the speeches.
All of this to say--you don't need to relate to the character to enjoy the show, but if the reason you liked breaking bad was because Walt felt relatable, that might be visibly absent here.

Only plot “hole” is that when his mother tells him to stop looking for his sister because it’s a dead end because there were no survivors, he maybe could have responded saying 1) he had a lead and/or 2) at least somebody survived potentially - like any sort of lead sounds like it would have been very important for Andor to discover and something he might have shared with his mother

to be honest I'd argue Andor is deviating quite a bit from the modern conception of Star Wars, I'd just argue that's not a bad thing, especially not since it deviates far less from the OT or Prequels than the modern *_conception_* of Star Wars. One thing to note is that Sci-Fi is more of a descriptor of setting whereas Fantasy is more of a descriptor of tone and narrative structure. The OT was, in terms of it's narrative and tone, a Fantasy first and foremost. The swords were made of laserz, but it did follow a farm boy whose family was killed by raiders in a far off desert taken in by an older mentor, told that he has special powers, trained in the ways of those mystical powers to save a princess and take down an evil empire. That is, at it's core, a very by-the-book generic Fantasy story. You can replace all of the sci-fi elements of Star Wars with equivalent Fantasy elements and lose very little. (the only thing that I can't imagine having a very neat replacement is the Death Star, but that's just because the concept of a super weapon isn't very Fantasy itself, Fantasy stories typically have other neguffins. With that said, super weapons *_do_* still exist in some form within Fantasies, they're just not quite as conventional. Think the Ring, rather than the Death Star. Both are sort of 'super weapons' and serve a similar narrative purpose as a neguffin, they just *_feel_* very different. Also, for what it's worth, 'neguffin' is just something I made up on the spot to describe the negative version of a mcguffin which is functionally what the Death Star and One Ring both are. They aren't really mcguffins since the protagonists don't want them and want to destroy them, but the narrative is still centered around them as important objects)
With that said, just because one entry follows the Fantasy formula doesn't mean the entire series is dictated by it. Star Wars *_is_* still a Sci-Fi universe, and while the core story beats of the OT may have been foundationally Fantasy, that doesn't mean you can just treat the entire series *_as_* a Fantasy universe. The OT's tone may have generally been uplifting and positive, but it wasn't 2023 'family friendly', it was 1970s 'family friendly'. As in, Watership Down qualifies. In fact, Watership down was released in 1978 compared to A New Hope's 1977, but whereas Watership down got a U (universal audiences, basically a G) A New Hope was actually split between G and PG, ultimately landing on PG. In other words the defining movie of the entire series was considered less suitable for children than Watership down. Putting aside the argument of whether it's better to protect children from more adult themes or attempting to do that just ill-prepares them for the real world, the point I'm making is that Star Wars was 'family friendly' in the 1970s, not 2020s. We're talking a half century difference in sensibilities and, for better or worse, the modern notion of 'family friendly' is *_far_* more restrictive. Andor is, IMO, just a tinge darker than the OT, and superficially is likely even more 'family friendly'. (what with Leia literally being sold as a slave) Realistically, a kid watching the torture scene may not even understand what's happening (at least not fully) but it's hard to misinterpret "sorry kid your family was murdered".
Andor is basically what the prequels were trying to be but ultimately failed to execute effectively. The prequels themselves are horribly flawed movies, but when people talk about Darth Vader, everyone thinks Anakin Skywalker. (and, for the record, I'm referring to character, not just name. In the OT we did learn Darth Vader was Luke's father and everything, but we never really knew *_who_* he was.) For as flawed as the movies themselves were their story is quintessientally Star Wars and that's why many people still greatly appreciate them, even if they don't really understand why and often use piss arguments in an attempt to rationalize it. The prequels were trying to be a darker story where the narrative is not one of triumph but of defeat, and ultimately things don't work out. The point isn't hoping that things work out well, because we know they don't, it's following the people and watching it unfold. Even if things ultimately don't work out, we can follow the characters, admire their dedication, appreciate their circumstances, etc; Andor is trying to do exactly that. We know how it ends, he dies on an irrelevant planet all in service of a minor victory that sees him just as another pawn in someone else's larger story, but we can still follow the journey and appreciate it along the way. The difference is that Andor's darker tone is accepted and embraced fully, rather than needing superficial 'family friendly' entertainment like Jar Jar. (although a Darth Jar Jar twist or something similar might have actually worked, or at least saved things a little) Andor is closer than the OT in terms of tone than modern 'Star Wars' is, and it's basically exactly what the prequels were trying, and failed, to be.
The only truly notable difference between Andor and the OT to me is that the OT, owing in large part to it's more conventional Fantasy narrative, largely coloured within the moral lines. The was some deviation and moral depth, but ultimately the right answer was "no matter what trust your family, even if all seems lost there is always good in people that will follow through". While that works within the narrative that was constructed, it's still very much painting in the moral lines. In contrast Andor is much more open to the idea that "No, fucking seriously, this is war, if you don't do morally dubious actions because *_you_* want to die with clean hands that makes you far more guilty than you realize." Whereas the OT says "there is good in everyone, Luke saved the day by believing in his father", Andor says "and the only reason the day was ever could be saved was because of the countless men before him who died without that idealism". I think this is the part most people are really stuck up on, why it doesn't 'feel' Star Wars, but this moral nuance *_was_* always a part of the Star Wars story, it just wasn't the OT narrative. Obi-wan is seen as a guiding moral figure, teaching Luke and acting as his gateway to his calling, and he openly says "yeah, you gotta kill your father, I lied to you because I knew if I didn't you wouldn't be willing to." In other words, while Luke's story is built on his idealism and it works out, the seeds of that moral nuance has always been planted at the core of the story. (and, again, it's something the prequels explored quite heavily with the supposedly virtuous Jedi Order preventing Anakin from rescuing his mother and ultimately leading to the creation of Darth Vader.)
Andor may not 'feel like Star Wars' but at the end of the day that's because it's not trying to; it's trying to be what Star Wars was to become, not just what the OT already was. Ever since the prequels and their poor execution Star Wars has been locked in limbo around the OT, never wanting to move forward with more adult themes because 'well that's what the prequels tried to do and look how that turned out' but what people aren't recognizing is that the prequels' stories thrived despite the prequels themselves failing. Luke was always an idealist, and that was the point. The OT recognized that his idealism was in some ways a virtue but Star Wars wasn't about Luke, it was about Anakin. The OT follows Luke but the overarching narrative is about Anakin's origins, Anakin's potential, Anakin's manipulation, Anakin's Fall, and, with his son, Anakin's ultimate redeption and fulfillment of the 'Chosen One' prophecy. (cough cough until Rey cough) Luke's vehement idealism was always the catalyst to Anakin's redemption, and Anakin's story is far less morally simple. The movies of the OT may have been about Luke, but the overarching narrative of Star Wars as a whole is Anakin's story; 1-3 tell Anakin's Tragedy, and 4-6 tell Anakin's Redemption. (again, we're just ignoring the sequels) People like to focus on the OT since it was better executed, but the tragedy has always been just as (if not more) important as the redemption.

It was about a rebel leader who had his mind wiped by the evil Galactic Federation (using a pair of headphones!) ... and then, to discredit him fully, was tried for sexual child abuse in a court of law, where the AI judge was fed false evidence, and found him Guilty. His sentence being Life in prison on the penal colony of Cygnus Alpha. (sound familiar?)

I don't buy this "Andor is Star Wars for adults" rubbish ... my 7-year-old self would have loved this even more than Blakes 7!
Because - even though there were only 2 shoot-outs in every 1 hour episode (sometimes - but all filmed in superb real-life locations, like 'Aldhani') ... we identified with the characters, and the way they bitched at each other! Even though we didn't understand most of what they were saying.
We couldn't care less - we loved the characters and re-enacted them at playtime on Tuesday morning every week ...
Yeah, I totally get that. I got exposed to Call of duty world at war at a really young age (probably shouldn't have, lol) and despite me not really understanding a lot of the conflicts or language used, I still had a blast because the game was fun as hell. Me, my brother, my cousins and a all my friends who were invited for weekend stays at my place would play it the entire weekend, especially because of the zombies mode.
The only available criticisms of the show seem to be the following:
- “feeling” of slowness in first 3-episode arc
- lack of a fantasy Star Wars feeling
Most of this is only a criticism in comparison to other Star Wars media, which itself needs to be interrogated (as if all Star Wars media is that of quality or even fast pace - major complaint of Phantom Menace was that it was slow, though I don’t think that’s the problem with PM)
As for slowness, I think that’s just because the first 3-episode arc itself serves as a pilot for plot and character direction
It’s not that it’s slow per se, but that it’s a long form introduction to a plot direction at the same time as we’re still learning who Andor is, and because Andor himself is also highly dynamic during what might normally serve as an introductory whole… I.e., our pilot is long form and the character is dynamic actors a long form pilot. It is still very gripping and I think the pacing is perfect, but I think this is part of why it feels “slow” given my expectations.
It may also be that it seems perfect in hindsight, or that I recognize its perfection in hindsight

I find it so hilarious that people who were once too embarassed to come out to try to defend the prequels now feel empowered to declare that those movies are masterpieces because they are comparitively ao much better than the sequels. I hate to break it to you guys, but the sequels being awful doesn't actually make the prequels better. The only thing that has really changed is that many people once thought that the prequels were as low as Star Wars could sink (we all agreed and still agree to pretend that the Holiday Special never happened), and then Disney came along and proved that notion woefully naive. The prequels are still _pretty bad_ in a lot of ways.
I think the kindest interpretation I have heard that is still realistic is that the prequels have a lot of really good ideas and even some excellent, legendary moments in them, but they are also filled with a lot of baffling decisions, really important moments that are just flat-out executed _badly,_ and an overall failure to bring both the trilogy as well as the individual movies together in a way that is meaningfully consistent and coherent. Epiaodes 1 and 2 both have problems with lacking focus, episode 1 more so, IME. All of these movies suffer from attrocious dialog accross the board that is only ever saved by some actors being able to compensate by being 6 foot, party-sized ham sandwiches. Unfortunately for both the movie as well as some actors' careers, not every character _could_ be played that way and so the dialog can't help but to regularly shit in the pants of everyone unlucky enough to be on screen at the time. The CGI is frequently uncanny and poorly composited, especially when mixed with live-action footage. There are some pretty serious plot holes and other issues with the writing, even if the _basic_ story outline is pretty solid.
I feel like the sequels lack any focus or clarity, however. And with the hindsight of how bad Star Wars can be without any sort of unified visiom behind it, I think that it does become obvious that this is not something that is a problem with the prequels. I think the prequels _do_ still have a unified vision pushing them forwards, however I think that perhaps that vision was a little blurry and that George Lucas may have needed to get his eyes checked.
This being the case does not change the fact that these complaints about the prequels, as well as many others I didnt mention, are all totally valid. Mr. Plinkett's original take-downs of these movies arent any less correct just because Disney managed to come along and pump out _waaay_ worse movies. That's not how this works. Just because the sequels were an F doesn't suddenly mean that the prequels get bumped from a C- up to a B+. Even if it made any sense to do so, you can't grade on a curve, here, because the OT already fucked the rest of the class by getting a solid A/ A+. We have _seen_ how good Star Wars _can_ be, and we shouldn't start pretending that sub-par content is suddenly a masterpiece just because we've seen how much worse it could be. I _want_ Star Wars to hit those same highs again, and I think that the capability is _absolutely_ there. Andor proves that it's possible. If we resign ourselves to accepting that the prequels are just as good as the OT, then we are setting the bar lower than we know the franchise is capable of achieving, and that's just a crying fucking shame.
Honestly, I have too much faith and optimism to just accept that it's not creatively possible to do any better. I don't buy it. Something obviously needs to change within Lucas Films and Disney to make sure they get the right people in the right creative positions and that they start greenlighting the right kinds of projects while shutting down the wrong ones, but these aren't _impossible,_ they're just _really hard_ to get them to do.
I think I tried watching a Robot Head video once where he suggested "fixing" Force Awakens by having Rey be an abandoned jedi padawan and I just stopped watching since I'm not of the belief that "More lightsabers and jedi = better content"

Started getting recommended Robot Head after a month of when I first started watching Mauler. I immediately watched it and said it was poopy doodoo content
I wasn't a fan of Andor, but that's not because I thought it was bad. It just wasn't for me. I am not going to take away from the enjoyment people have had and I always enjoy critiques of bad faith criticism. Seriously, Robot Head complained about the new Spiderverse movie being too woke; really shows where his priorities lie
The minute I heard you kick the Dead horse that deserves every kick it gets known as TLJ I knew this was gonna be good. For A minute their I thought you were just one of those Disnoid that hate channels that criticize their garbage star wars fanfiction. As for Robot head his early videos on the choreography in TLJ were great but his content was only so good because of how bad TLJ is, it's so bad that a market for crapping on it threw a wide net that accepted anyone willing to join in on destroying that cinematic tumor. His Andor video is the last thing I saw from him before never looking at his content again. I am also a prequel fan but I also no those films are objectively garbage but the prequel era brought so much rich world building to star wars I enjoy those film despite how bad they are. Also Andor is the best live action star wars since the OT with the best star wars content still being some of the EU novels like the Bane trilogy or thrown trilogy.
Doubtful anyone will ever see this but this is my favorite piece of star wars film/show that has come from disney. It certainly has its flaws, it isnt perfect, but its not bad either.
While I liked it I won't say I'm sad to hear it will only have 2 seasons, Andor is a character from a movie I personally dont think needed to be made (rogue one essentially only exists to explain how the rebels got the death star blueprints which i dont believe needed explaining).
My biggest complaint is that I'm kinda tired of seeing the same 3 eras on screen, as though to films and shows the only eras of starwars that exist are the prequels, Ot, and sequels... can we have something other than that?

I'm not really familiar with the effects coverage like that has on channels. I really only follow efap and they haven't nuked channels as far as I'm aware. Even someone as discreditable as Organized Chaos still has a following despite them covering him

I don't think that's necessary true. Exposure through bigger channels often ends up being beneficial in terms of views. If it's just some petty drama and not something major to entirely sink them, like past criminal history or ongoing controversy of similar scale.
Andor is a piece of art and anyone who says otherwise is willfully shooting themselves in the foot. SW isn't a genre, it’s a universe and many different genres, themes, characters, and stories have yet to be discovered in that universe. If someone wants the 'feel' of the old movies there is good news, the old movies still exist, so literally go watch them again. As horrendous as some of the Last Jedi was I have grown to appreciate that Rian was also trying to make something new, his execution in some of that 'newness' was very questionable but the stuff that worked really worked. This misguided unconscious consensus of SW fans that we need to ‘recapture’ those feelings from the first films has led to an over saturation of bad SW trying to live up to something it shouldn’t even need to. Every SW project doesn’t need the same themes, characters, and feeling as the OG trilogy, that'd get repetitive and very boring. Most new projects have virtually become parodies of the source material where nothing is left but references cameos, and generic mic-drop lines that fit in any situation. I love Andor not just because it is full of heart, nuance, and complex storytelling in a thematically dark setting but also because of what it represents: innovation of SW and a new hope that future SW projects don't have to be self referential, sloppily written, poorly executed, mass produced projects rather than pieces of art that stand on their own merit. Disneys and the fans problem has been thinking that SW is a genre and everything must fit into very confined rules. If someone thinks Andor is too boring they need to consider spending less time feeding their dopamine receptors with stuff like Tik Tok and take the time to pay attention to what’s happening between action sequences. They’ll realize that that there is a lot of nuance and character work happening, it is a masterclass of writing and direction. If someone thinks Andor doesn't feel like SW they need to reframe how they understand the IP, it is not a genre of itself. The themes, characters, settings, sounds, textures, virtually everything is straight out of the Lucas doctrine and what story he was trying to tell. If someone thinks Andor stands shoulder to shoulder on equal footing as Obi Wan, Ahsoka, or Boba Fett they need to try and summarize one of those shows and try to summarize Andor, the difficulty to do so for Andor succinctly is indicative of the complex level of detail and care. Andor is lightyears ahead of those shows in virtually every cinema or storytelling criteria. Anyone who loves this show should be promoting it and recommending it to everyone they know. Systems either change or die and there is only one way out of this SW slump of bad media.

Mando was written to feel like a serial you saw at a theater back in the days of Tom mix serials. That went over so many people's heads. Why can't you just watch and enjoy? My wife and I lived it. It was great fun. There were things that confused us, but we wanted to enjoy it. And did. Whining about Star wars for views and likes is f'ing lame.
