Labor slammed over $600 million plan for NRL team in PNG

- Sky News host Paul Murray has criticised the Labor government’s plan to spend $600 million on a NRL team in Papua New Guinea.
“Oh it’s all of course about making sure China doesn’t make further pushes into the Pacific Region - rubbish,” Mr Murray said.
“It’s about guaranteeing that the NRL ends up with another team which means … more games, more money for their television rights.”
He said this means Australian taxpayers will end up paying for “another” football team.
“Now if we were talking about a hospital, if we were talking about infrastructure that would mean that when Papua New Guinea gets itself into trouble they would not turn to China, they would turn to us - that’s one thing.
“But a football team?”

This is sick. There are so many homeless living in the streets in parks in cars and tents. Australian children go to school who had no breakfast and without lunch boxes. This money could be used for school lunch.

The NRL and AFL Yes support was tied to the many federal grants the various leagues and clubs were given for the multitude of stadiums upgrades, new training and administrative headquarters built over recent years.
@@PjRjHj Why did any of that require supporting the Yes campaign? Those were our tax monies designed to foster sport for recreation in the community.
Are you suggesting that the Federal government was going to withdraw all grants to the NRL unless it supported Yes?

Nrl got millions recently to send indigenous players out to unruly towns now a 600 million deal
A PNG team, being constantly thrashed by cricket level scores would actually be a weekly embarrassment to their country. There is no way they could field a competitive team of locals. And what big name Australian or Islander player is going to relocate to Port Moresby when far better options are available in Australia.
The whole thing, beside being a total waste of money, is just a really STUPID idea.

It hasn't cost the Aus and NZ governments anywhere near that amount to subsidise Super Rugby's Fijian Drua, and Moana Pasifika.
Australia, New Zealand, and China have already been engaging in Stadium diplomacy in the region. One has to wonder how deep that really matters compared to funding critical infrastructure in Pacific
