Both sides are both a bell and a diaphragm. They serve as a bell when you apply no pressure/light pressure. They serve as a diaphragm when you apply firm pressure.
The larger side is for adults and the smaller side is for pediatric patients.
If you wish, you may remove the diaphragm from the smaller/pediatric side, thereby turning it exclusively into a bell.

Life saver I actually in medical assistance. When I was practicing on one of my classmates I completely forgot to turn my stethoscope I Was like why I wasn't hearing the heartbeat lol 😅 thank you so much 💗

Very good. Just one extra advice, from a 30 year practice, take off the diaphragm from the bell. Nothing beats the bell directly over bare skin.

The large diaphragm is for adult and teenage patients, the small diaphragm is for pediatric patients under 13, in my experience. The only providers that actually use the small diaphragm are Pediatricians, Peds Cardiology and EMS.
