You're a life saver! Just tried this on my old clunker Mac which has a RAM issue. Followed your trial and error method and it looks like the bottom slot is a bit damaged. Have taken RAM out've that one and voila! I can now get all my docs off it. Phew. Keep up the good word Ken!

I had the same issue with my 2012 13 1278 MacBook Pro. The upper slot is through hole soldered and the bottom slot is BGA soldered. The BGA solder balls are known to crack. I was able to fix mine with some flux and a heat gun. Make sure you put tinfoil around the slot so it doesn't get melted by the heat gun. Only the balls should be exposed to the heat gun. It can take up to three minutes of heating to reflow the balls. The logic board is designed to absorb heat. You will need to remove the cpu heatsink, speaker and the Sticker with the serial number. Let the board cool for at least 10 minutes before reinstalling.
Man, this is the first I've heard of this failure mode for these machines. I know some older PowerBook G4's had dodgy RAM slots, but not this. A bummer, but at least now I know whenever I go to invest in one of these used what I may be up against.

All I was doing was looking up quilting fabrics (yep.. 29 year old super quilter (: needless to say my Mac is now back up and running and I’m ordering fabrics again! During this quarantine I worked on my Mac (I had this issue for over a year). Looks like the logic board cracks sometimes internally (by loads of moving it, weight, etc) and the pins start failing. I took it to the "Genius" bar and they told me it was worth nothing. I worked on it a little bit and finally made it work, however if I move it it happens again. I haven't tried the one ram approach but will do it. P.S. In some angles (Horizontal Scree, vertical Keyboard) it runs nice and smooth

Found this very interesting, just sold on my Macbook 2012 because of this very issue! If I carried it around or moved it, it would show artifacts, freeze and restart. Tried all sorts to fix the slots but eventually gave up!
I have this MacbookPro mid-2012 for a while and yesterday I decided to repair it by myself after 2 reparation places told me it's impossible because it's the mother board (and the cost of repairing it it's bigger than the laptop). I removed the pressure pad which is explained at 12:36.. that pad had the shape of my ram which told me that there is a lot of pressure to the ram. in other videos i saw people installing credit cards under the lower slot to lift it up. so removing this thing could be the trick- for now its working fine with 2x 8gb ram

I was playing with my 2009 MacBook Unibody, and I noticed something about this video. The Crucial RAM you bought was DDR3L, a fully compatible, but less power hungry version of DDR3. MacBooks really do not like this type of RAM. I have several DDR3L sticks in a collection, and when I got my MacBook with only 2 GB of RAM, I tried to upgrade it with these DDR3L sticks, and got a 3 beep and 5 sec pause POST error. That might be the reason why the green Crucial RAM never worked. Even if it was the RAM pin issue, it would be highly likely if the crucial ram would have never worked at all.
My old Macbook (mid-2007) had a bad RAM slot and I didn't have the know-how or interest to repair something on the motherboard so instead of having 4GB of RAM with 2 2GB dims I just old had 2GB of RAM with 1 2GB dim
It was a 2011 model of the MacBook Pro (The eject button is removed when Apple removed the disk drive in the later model and replace it with the power button)

I'm writing this comment in the exact same model of Macbook Pro that appears in this video and I've never had any issues with RAM, even after upgrading to 8GB!
pfft imagine being stuck with 2GB because the computer can't recognise more than 2GB, no matter if you have one 2GB stick inserted (like it should) or two 2GB sticks inserted and both RAM slots seem to work fine
I had this on my Mid 2012 like 7 months ago. One out of two of my 4GB RAM Sticks burned out, so I had to take out only of the RAM sticks that was corrupted/broken. It runs perfectly fine on 4GB of total ram now, although I can spend like £40 to get the 8GB ram sticks upgrade. It's nothing to be worried about.
This was really helpful, and thanks to the guys who originally documented this pretty ridiculous defect from Apple with a stupid high price tag, that is guaranteed to fail around the time the warranty expires

MacBook Pros 2012 13" had problems with the RAM slot, MacBook Pros 2012 15” had problems with the graphics chip. Apple had done a great job again. And when you complained to Apple about your macBook, they installed the same hardware crap again.

I have a mid-2012 MacBook Pro that I use every day and runs 24/7 the only issues I've had with hardware was the fan bearing dying and my MagSafe literally melting and giving me a burn maybe the "runs 24/7" part has something to do with the RAM slot still being fine because the heat makes the solder able to move around slightly and not break off or something?
so I ended up her because I have a similar issue with my Air... not the same thought,it boots and runs.. but at random I get similar bars all across there screen, mine aren't black, mine are all random colours. it freezes, shuts down and sometimes boots back up on its own, and sometimes not... No just no!! You will ruin your oven as the solder can be toxic, plus it's not a permanent fix. You need proper reflow equipment, and that cost in the 1,000's of dollars just to get started doing it right.
Had a 2013 MBP die on my friend this week. Messed with it for quite a while, and it ended up dying even more. At this point it just chimes and sits on a black screen. Every attempt to reinstall an OS for some reason made the computer reboot 3 minutes in. Weird stuff.
Apple certified RAM is just like saying certified pre-owner cars are somehow better than regular RAM or different. Not really SODIMM DDRxL non-ecc is the same across all systems. I use “PC only” RAM all the time for Mac upgrades and it works just fine
my cousin also has wonky RAM in her mid-2010 MacBook Pro it only recognises 2GB of RAM, and the GPU likes to just stop working at random if not in safe mode (because safe mode uses software rendering) I swapped the RAM sticks out and it didn't help
I had this problem on my mid 2009 MacBook Pro I replaced the ram and the ssd and the hard drive it did not help in the end I just bought a new MacBook Pro

I was actually positive it was not the RAM sticks' fault, considering the weird patterns on screen. I've never seen a RAM stick that shows partial signs of life. In my (admittedly limited) experience, I've seen nothing like that, only darn dead RAM you could not boot with, or perfectly working RAM.

Sooooo I have a 2011 mbp and I have installed 16 gb of ram on it. I have never had a problem with the 16 gb even though there should not be that much. Anyway, I also used the dosdude’s patcher for catalina. 6 months go buy and I am using it as a daily driver because I am a high school/ college student. All of a sudden the screen gets messed up and starts beeping the same way. I have upgraded my MacBook Pro to its highest specks and I am not sure what could be happening. Could it be that my Mac is not regulating the ram and letting it get full? I am thinking it does not regulate the ram and then will panic if there is not enough. Pls someone help me

Usually the bottom Port is the one that goes. I use one 8gb stick on the top. It's slow but it'll work

Same thing happened to my 2011 17” MBP. I just bought a single 8GB stick for the top slot. Interesting that it seems to be a common problem

My 13' has the same problem. Fixed it with an old credit card cut to small pieces an putted them onderneath the ram slots so all the pins made contact

Macs have different beeping patterns depending on what fails in the POST. In the case of the one shown in the video, it was RAM or RAM slot failure.

3 beeps every 5 seconds means the RAM did not pass an integrity check, as in the memory might be unstable.

So the fix is using only top slot? Would it be okay to buy a larger ram and use in top slot?

Not sure. This issue doesn't relate to the RAM modules. The issue is the RAM pins on the board.

Sooooo I have a 2011 mbp and I have installed 16 gb of ram on it. I have never had a problem with the 16 gb even though there should not be that much. Anyway, I also used the dosdude’s patcher for catalina. 6 months go buy and I am using it as a daily driver because I am a high school/ college student. All of a sudden the screen gets messed up and starts beeping the same way. I have upgraded my MacBook Pro to its highest specks and I am not sure what could be happening. Could it be that my Mac is not regulating the ram and letting it get full? I am thinking it does not regulate the ram and then will panic if there is not enough. Pls someone help me
if one slot is bad, just return the 2x4GB and buy 1 8gb stick to put in the working slot.

Edit: Just use verbose mode to see the problem if it isn’t beeping or wanting to play chess.
