- Here's the next episode of Chordplay with The Chords Of David Lee Roth. I've noticed a number of requests to feature some of David Lee Roth's solo output, which is great as we're able to look at some different players and rhythm guitar ideas hiding within Roth's catalog of music.
The ideas shared in this lesson were pulled from three classic DLR solo albums, including tracks from Eat 'Em And Smile, Skyscraper, and A Little Ain't Enough. This includes sections from songs such as 'Big Trouble,' 'Goin' Crazy,' 'Hot Dog And A Shake,' 'Two Fools A Minute,' 'It's Showtime!,' 'Damn Good,' and much more!
Needless to say, if you're a fan of David Lee Roth's solo material, Steve Vai, Jason Becker, and others - not to mention uncovering some great chord-based and rhythm guitar examples played by bonafide guitar legends - this lesson is totally for you! Bought this album back in the days and I remembered being floored by Vai, not the solos per se but the little fills he would do all over the place like Van Halen. The album is still great to this day unlike many of the 80s stuff
My favourite chordplay episode. Eat Em And Smile is an amazing album, where 4 masters combine and made magic.
Awesome David! Needs a part 2. Reckon A little Ain't Enough is hugely underrated in his catalog. The interplay between Jason Becker and Steve Hunter is unreal. Cheers.
Amen to that ! On most days A Little Ain’t Enough is my favorite DLR album ! Bluesy and badass hard rock with slower burning tunes that are just killer like tell the truth and high tempo rocking stuff like drop in the bucket and the title track ! Love Dave’s first 3 albums !
Yes!! I’ve been waiting for this one !!!
Ladies Night in a Buffalo has a great chord change in the solo section that sounds so good to my ears.
Big Trouble was my favorite also. I saw them on the first album. Amazing show. When Steve played Van Halen solos he would lay his guitar on a speaker and play them like that. He was a god in those days.
Some of the best riffs for sure !
David lee Roth knew what he was doing by recruiting those guitar players !!
👍🏻👍🏻🙂
Goin Crazy and Damn Good are two of my favourite songs of all time. Thanks!
That was excellent. I love all those rhythm parts. To me all the DLR solo stuff is outstanding. Thank you especially for demoing Damn Good, an all-time favorite of mine!
That “Showtime” is addicting! Thanks Dave!
Big Trouble is an absolutely epic guitar song! The solo is total fire!
Sweet bro , some of the most monster songs, chords, and licks
I like the intros to "Just Like Paradise", "Goin Crazy", "Perfect Timing" and "Tobacco Road".
Some of the Via finger plucking reminds me of Mark Knopfler. Really great albums, all three of them. Also a few good cuts from the later albums as well. Thanks, good content!
Let's all stop comparing music and sales because it doesn't matter. Both albums mentioned are perfect and were a time-and-place-thing. Great song selections and overall lesson. Thank you.
Skyscraper was so awesome showtime is killer I wore out that cassette big time Hena was another great track on that one not to take anything away from Eat em and smile great stuff David 🤘👏👍
That was a great watch!
Those first three Roth albums were a bit special alright. 🤘
Can’t wait to see this on Patreon!!! Got my new membership for this…
Fantastic episode. I just love how you break these guitar parts down so easy to understand. Thanks David
Thanks for the breakdowns of some classic stuff from the 80s and 90s. There was a lot of great soloing on these albums but the rhythm and fills were above and beyond.
His solo albums were great and in my mind it’s going to be a long time before anyone gets near that lineup. So much chemistry and soul . Love it and it always puts a smile on my face David. Great video well executed Sir. Rock on
Whoa! I clicked on this and expected a shred riff but instead I got (claps!) fingerpicking! This is awesome, Sensei Dave! Thank you so much for these outstanding lessons!
Great episode! thx!
The impact of what Eat Em And Smile had/has on me is right up there with Van Halen 1. MONSTER record. You are awesome my man.
That show time riff is so good. So so good
Those really are awesome riffs, very groovy, too!
first album had some killers on there
great lesson dude.
let's have some Vinnie Vincent riffs
Always loved EVH but Vai is incredible. Great lesson Dave always love the lessons. You're hitting the apex with DLR guitarists. Keep up the great work 🎸 he like Ozzy never had a bad guitarist 🤘👍🤘
Great lesson as always, Dave! I just moved into a new place and started setting up my music room. In this process, I found my Steve Vai Guitar Extravaganza book that had all the David Lee Roth tunes with Tab and notation. I think the book is out of print, but I remember playing Damn Good a lot!!
Dam that fender telecaster is sick bro beautiful.
Very great lesson and breakdown of David Lee Roths guitarists riffs. !!🎸
Hey what up man how you been I checked in with you in a minute I hope all is well I've been busy anyways I'm glad you did this I kid you not Yankee Rose is the reason I play guitar I was about five years old when I saw that video and heard him make the guitar laugh and talk that's one baseball was over and guitar-playing began
Outstanding as always, thank you!!!
Its great you are having a look the chords on these albums . The sheer brilliance and melodic magic they gave the songs made every second a pleasure to listen too.
Excellent edition, some great DLR output🤘
Showtime is one of those songs I’ve been working on for probably 10yrs…its a little over my pay grade…make that, a lot over my pay grade….great stuff Dave👍
awesome time for both bands Van Halen and David Lee Roth great songs thanks David
First 2 albums are the best imo (first really). Still, so sad Jason never got to tour with DLR, but at least we have him on record.
Superb Lesson !
Saw DLR live when Joe Holmes was playing in the band. He was awesome - knew all of the riffs and licks.
Good work! Thanks
Eat em and smile was the only one I had, but it is badass
awesome episode as always
Holy %$#@ !!!!! this is great. Got to get out the guitbox and give some of this a try. Really would love to see DLR get the band back together for a EIAS reunion gig or thirty three.
Good Job David! But you miss my favorite song! Hina from Skyscraper. Every time that guitar part blow me away.
Always love your videos because we're apprently sensitive to the same songs :p). Thanks for Jason's riff, never figured it out before, very cool and amazing song indeed. Peace.
Still have eat em and smile cassette
Great vid. I think Vai's best work was with DLR Band. Very musical, but still an inch to the left, like the lick here. He needs song structure to keep him from over noodling. LOL! Cheers.
Goin’ Crazy
Yep!
It’s a good one ☝️🇬🇧👍
Great video. My a chord guy so it’s nice to see a different approach.
By the way: on your list, John 5 and John Lowery are the same person.
Saw that tour. With vai. It was so great. Roth wanted to make sure you knew he picked. The best musician a
Good job D but......................Coconut Grove was missed :-)
Dammit that Tele sounds amazing! Also that bit sounds like a Satriani thing.
Awesome content, i always get interested and educated from your videos. Never saw that acoustic sounds great, and appears to be a smaller body with a wide spaced flat radius steel string, good for finger picked. But looks tighter at the nut. What is that if someone doesn't mind identifying that might know?
Best regards 😊
great VH shirt there , btw
Great lesson David, you’re awesome.
Would It’s Showtime be in A Dorian mode?
Those were great tunes you picked for this, have you thought of an XTC episode?
YES!!!
MY FAVORITE PHRASE FROM DOC BREWESTER IS...."SOMETHING LIKE THAT"... AS HE NAILS IT...
Wow man how you keep your guitar in tune?
Also what string gauge you use?
I prefer eat em and smile to 5150
However, that was Roth’ solo zenith.
Cracks me up how you totally nail a riff but then say, "or something like that."
That "Damn Good" part kinda reminds me of "Black Water" by the Doobie Brothers
That is a nice sounding acoustic guitar, what is it?
Listen to the guitar and bass work on Elephant Gun. 🐘 🔫
Incredible.
The weirdest thing about the opening guitar in Goin' Crazy is the timing of it, better audible later in the song with drums.
The riff stadts a bit late in the bar.
Wait, DLR knows what a chord is?
Hope you're kidding about hot dog and a shake David lol. It was about, well, nevermind 😂
David Lee Roth...back when people could actually sing and play instruments.
No Davesickle Guitar?... WTF!
Yo!! How can this be called “Chord Play” and no mention of that big ole fat Yankee Rose chord that opens the Eat ‘em and Smile album!! 😂
Hey, check out the Chordplay episode "Big Chords" and you'll find that intro.
: )
Notice you listed both John 5 & John Lowery in the guitarist list…ummm…that’s the same guy. Great lesson. Skyscraper and L’il Ain’t Enough are so underrated, in my opinion.
Yeah, sorry about that , totally my bad there.
When I saw the name I was totally thinking of the guy from Sevendust - Clint Lowery.
Duh me, John Lowery is John 5.
Mistakes happen, and I should know - I make my share of 'em.
: )
PLEASE OH PLEASE THE CHORDS OF RICHIE KOTZEN (50 FOR 50) AND BEYOND AND BEHIND....
Brilliant video. But Eat Em and Smile is the better guitar album as far as I'm concerned.
What??….No Ladies Night in Buffalo?!?!
I love you Dave. But when I seen u doing chords of David Lee Roth I thought you lost your mind
Jesus dude you got some big friggin hands. Your hand is as big as the guitar body. Do you live near a nuclear powerplant?
Request: can you explain from Van Halen the souffle cool guitar on "I am the one". I would love to Play that one perfect 😁🤘
Thanks Dave 👍
