  • Here's a 12" GE solid state B&W TV using the "XB" chassis from January, 1979. This TV displays the "performance television" badge; which, was used on GE color and B&W TV's from the late '70's-early '80's. The "XB" chassis was used in many 12" and 15" GE B&W sets made from around 1974 until at least 1981. GE also used the same style cabinet with some "SF" chassis tube sets. In the early '80's, GE discontinued the "XB" chassis, in favor of rebadged sets that were made in Korea. I have an '83 GE 12" B&W that was actually made by Goldstar; so, that tells me that '81-'82 was the last year for the better quality "XB" chassis sets. Here, you'll see a clip from the '80's TV series, "MacGyver"; which, was one of my favorite shows when I was a kid.

My family bought one of these new for the back bedroom. We got many, many years of good service from it. What I remember most about this set is that it could really draw in distant stations. We lived in South Bend, Indiana -- and our little GE set could usually get channels 9 and 32, and sometimes even 44, from Chicago. That was a pretty remarkable feat.

That "XB" chassis must've been a performer to have been used all those years! Nice set, Man! Thanks for sharing!

Had one as a kid in the 1990s. Mine had a silver speaker grille and said it was made in 1976. Always loved the uniqueness of the slide on/off switch, let you keep the volume set where you wanted it like a modern TV does too.

I have a 19" GE with that chassis! Horizontal output transistor replaced once and it is still ticking. An LCD would be doing good to be around five years.

The GE portacolors in the 80s had the griplet problem. I fixed many of them. Most had intermittent vertical sweep. Banging on the side of the cabinet would induce the problem. The foil trace around the griplet would crack and cause the trouble near a wire wound resistor.that always ran hot. The griplets are used on double sided PC boards They are used on today's micro electronics but don't give the trouble that they used to because of cooler temperature components and smd's

I think GE kept tube B&W sets around longer than most everyone else and they were bad about using the same cabinets for both the tube and SS.

Is this the chassis that had that damn "gripplet" problem where you had to hardwire point to point or was that the color models that came later? I remember having to do it but only a couple of times.
