An FX Loop in a 50 watt amplifier! Excellent. Boss please take note. It's what you should have done with your Katana 50 MKII EX, instead of all those extra features beginners and just-play-at-home guitarists don't need. I wonder if this will force Boss to re-think.
Finally. I respect modeling amps but ive hated that the Katana and the likes had so many options. This is what i wanted. Something simple that can take pedals.
years ago I was saving 300€s to buy a Katana 50 , now I have a marvellous Fender Stage 100 ( mint condition!) and a very good Harley Benton Mosfet Lead 65W( sounds 100W, very warm jazzy tone, the older version Mosfet Lead with a very good Celestion G12T speaker!), this Blackstar could be a good spare amp, the speaker is 4 Ohm, so my HarleyBentons Celestion speaker 4 ohm should fit! Speakers make a lot ot the tone, I think the Blackstar deserves a better one...( then again the demos might have brannew speakers it takes time to play them in!) I lost interest in the Katana for the computer reasons: I even read somewhere that you can start the amp wrongly: so it shuts up and has to be taken to shop!! Ha Ha! that was the thing I thought: keep your computers I want a straight solid state amp for my carefully chosen pedals!!! CHEERS, Kimmo in Finland
Did you end up getting it ? I'm the same , I'm torn between this , the Katana mk11 50 and the Line 6 Catalyst 60 . The thing is this looks simpler with a good reverb built in , and I prefer using pedals , than faffing around setting the effects built in . Plus that Cream and Burgundy would look ace with my Olympic White Strat which has aged to a nice creamy colour and it's got a Tortoiseshell plate lol .
@@kimmolingonheimo I found a used katana 100 mk1 for a good price. I'm in Canada so the black Star was hard to find. I have a few settings that sound great and don't mess with the app much
If you have pedals, this is the amp for you. I needed a practise amp as it’s just for 1-2 hours a day. I can’t used the tube amp due to its volume. This by far is superior for my use. It’s just a great amp for its price.
I am getting this amp delivered today, after doing plenty of research, that is. I am currently on my third brand of modeling amp. It's a month old and in for warranty repair. Each previous modeling amp had a different problem that boiled down to the computerization of components. I'm going back to basics with the Debut 50R. This set-up works for me. I don't want apps and downloads and updates. I just want to play.
@Masetheguitarman I think it handles pedals just fine. I have six different ones that I use. Not all at once, just for particular sounds when needed. I suggest experimenting with the loop and running them in-line. This amp is just what I needed.
@damasterkarej This amp is very simple to operate. What a change. Reminds me of some amps I had years ago. I watched the RUclips video reviews, but I needed to see and hear for myself. I don't use a lot of gain like some reviewers do, just enough to get the right tone. I actually run a clean tone more often than not. The tone controls on my guitars sound more responsive through this amp. I like the 50w/5w switch. The other extras on this amp surprised me, too. I suggest trying the Debut 50 and determine if it fits your style and sound.
Sat in on a gig saturday , first time with the debut , was outside unmiced playing blues slightly dirty sound with a tremolo pedal . It absolutly was top class i was blown away and got a lot of nice comments too
One of the key differences between this and the Katana would be the lack of inbuilt effects in this Blackstar which I actually think is a point in the Blackstar’s favour. What you’ve essentially got here is a reliable, decent sounding, probably lightweight pedal platform with absolutely nothing else you don’t need, whereas the katana can be used for that, it still does have a lot of extra stuff that someone with a pedalboard is probably not looking for. Chuck a new speaker in this amp and you have yourself a real winner, you know these will be selling for absolute peanuts on the used market in 10+ years too!
I have the katana the effects are cool I guess but theyre not as good as pedals... I dont use effects I also dont rly use that amp much at all. I like this blackstar more for this sitting around in living room playing.
I agree, and lightweight? Under 20 pounds! I thought it was a typo. You don't need to haul around a boat anchor to get the sound you want. You could add a few pedals or not, but maybe the challenge is to use what you got. The epitome of plug-n-play.
Really nice rhythm playing from the Captain, as well as his usual excellent leads. As someone practicing to try to get better at an older age, you are very inspirational!
Hello and sorry to ask. I have also one (sounds great) but I have buzz when I plug any of my guitars. The more I turn volume / watts / gain up the more it buzzes. Do you have buzz also with it or not ? Thanks for your support.
Howdy all, I ordered a new Debut 50r Yesterday (Friday) and it just came, the next day!!! (said it was gonna come monday) 🤟😆 ....Fair do's, Andertons as always Fantastic... Keep it up Capn 👍 Awesome
Love the FX loop, the 5 watt mode, the look and the no fuss approach to this amp. Was thinking of the Spark 40 and BOSS Katana, but I kind of hate the fuss that comes attached with all the apps and patches and whatnot. I like simple no fuss amps, and this looks like it would give me a great platform for pedals which I really like
As a newish guitarist, I'd prefer this over the Katana (which I used to own). The reason is mainly due to simplicity. The Katana just has too much fiddly stuff, and the Tone Studio software is rubbish. I find that I'd rather have a simple amp and shape my tone through pedals that I choose.
Well done Blackstar , nice price , good sound , A bloody FX LOOP !! ( whether you use it or not ) take note everyone else . Most weekend pub / club players should be happy with this one , and give it two or three years, I’ll be happy to pick one up as a spare for a ton . I know Blackstar are a bit marmite , some hate them , some love them , depending on if you’ve used one already or had bad experience . My 50 watt club valve head sits ready for any gig life may throw at it , but will usually use my Katana 100 combo till it drops as its light ‘ish and convenient . Nice one !
Cool amp. You should test it against Marshall MG50 on one side and Blackstar HT-20 on other. It's like old classic vs tube. And Katana, because there's always Katana :) Oh, and hello to Tay! Happy to See you again!
The amount of 'gear per $ spent' you get today is just incredible. I would gig with many of the sub 250$ amps and sub 400$ guitars availibe today without hesitating.
This makes me think more of the Orange CR60 than the Boss Katana, with the more classic styling and the all-analog design. I found the Orange CR60 to be my favorite solid state amp, so I'm really curious about trying this new Blackstar solid-state amp and seeing how it compares!
Seems like a great amp for the price. I love my Katana and my Crush 60, but this looks like a great affordable alternative for someone who wants simplicity. Would love to hear it really put to the test some more. Let Oz play some doom through it, and give Dave a couple cans of Coke and an hour alone in a room with out 😁
I think it would be cool if you did of a comparison of this with the Katana and Orange 35rt. Katana because of the same volume, and Orange because if the all analog circuit. Honestly I like the blackstar sound in videos. And the fact they made a Katana “competitor” is intriguing to me. Personally, I don’t like the Katana sound, but it has enough volume for gigs. And now that this out, I wanna see if it too can play some gigs. (I mean they are the same wattage so I’d expect you can play it at gigs.)
Hey Captain and Pete! I've gotten addicted to watching your videos, the only downside is my bank account is suffering because I keep buying the guitars and gear your reviewing, but heck, he who dies in the end with the most gear wins! Thanks for the video, an escape from my terribly boring life. Rock on brothers.
i remember when the Andertons channel first started with Lee and Chappers. Lee was a little hesitant with his lead playing at the time, but now when a video opens and I close my eyes, I can't tell if the melodic leads are Pete or Lee!
Now wait a minute, you can't just break out that awesome hollow body at the end without telling us anything about it. What is that beauty? Awesome video by the way.
Dang it! I just bought a Fender Champion 50xl. I'd take an all analog Blackstar amp over the Champ any day of the week and twice on Sunday. Great video guys! You're playing is killer and that amp sounds really good. Guess I'll have to see what the guitar shop will give me in trade in.
I tried a Champion 100. And it's hard to tell, but to be honest, I think it sounded better than this. At least on clean tones to dirty. Might be worth trying the older Vox Pathfinder 15R too. Mine sounds better than the Champions, though it won't go as loud and is a tighter / punchier sound. (other downside is they aren't the very quitest amp - they do seem to suffer a bit of hiss/hum)
@desmondfitzgerald6952 I haven't had the opportunity to play through a Champ 100. I had the 40 but I just couldn't get into the tone. I got the 50xl because of the Celestion Midnight 60 speaker thinking that it would do the trick and it does sound infinitely better. To the point that I'm considering replacing the speakers in my Bugera 1x12 cabs with Midnight 60s. It does help but the tone just isn't quite there. I have a Blackstar 5w tube head and I've had the id core 40w. Blackstar has something in their tone that I just love. They're definitely harder hitting in the muds and the ISF control is amazing. I have their tube dual distortion and dual drive pedals. Both have the ISF control and it really does help shape your tone to exactly where you want it. I can only imagine how well those pedals would sound with the Debut 50
@@mattsikes919 I do think, if the amplifier circuit is decent enough, it's mostly about the speaker and cab. That's why the Vox Pathfinder 15R is good. It's a nice sounding speaker + cab combo. And the tremelo is a nice sounding circuit too, reverb not bad either. The driven sound does the choppy stabby VOX sound well enough too, though it's more the cleaner sound I like.
Sounds great with the Humbuckers. Not as fan of single coil pickups personally. They can be dialed in, but takes longer, but I do like singles in the neck position. Great for mellow stuff, some leads. I like the fatter sound from humbuckers in the bridge. Love the amp. They been making some great stuff lately!
Still waiting for te comparisson video with the Boss Katana. Anyhow, i bought it a few weeks ago and i love it. It sounds amazing, takes pedals really well and it's freaking loud. Now al i need is a footswitcht but i don't know wich one to get.
This plus an affordable multifx unit like a headrush or something would be perfect for a first gigging set up or even a small gig amp for professionals, even a good backup amp.
How has this not popped up in my searches? I’ve been wanting to graduate to a guitar with an effects loop, yet within my budget and sill with just as much power as mi current Vox Cambridge 50, which I love, only it has no FX Loop and the flimsy little adapter it uses for power has some sort of short in it that causes it to emit an alarming shower of sparks every time I plug it in, which I must unplug and re-plug it before I am able to power her up.
As an easy and not so delicate (no tubes) grab and go amp for small solo gigs, alongside my rather nice pedalboard, I will definitely look into this. I reckon it could definitely benefit from a speaker upgrade too! Love how it’s not a digital amp.
The amp's speaker has a very small magnet for a 12". I'm waiting to see videos comparing different speakers.. The stock speaker sounds very nice, but i bet a quality speaker would make this amp sound absolutely incredible.
Blackstar has definiteley a BRITISH ROCK sound ! Orange is OVERPRICED , Thnx to the "IFS" control , Blackstar has a BRITISH & AMERICAN Voicing , ( Blackstar was founded by a Former Marshall AMP employees ! )
Would love to hear this with some basic pedals, say a TS-9, BOSS SD-1, DD-8 , RV-6 etc. Perhaps even a stereo setup using two of these amps, they seem cheap enough to buy two ! -Cheers ! 👍
Sounds awesome - but as far as i see, there is no Master-Volume, is it? On 4 Cable-Methode i like to switch between preamp (Stompmode) and poweramp (Amp-Simulation).
I have the cherry sunburst H7V and am curious how you had the knobs on the vintage sunburst Pete's playing (and the amp knobs too for that matter). It really is a great sounding package.
Awesome !! Reminds me of the Hughes & Kettner "Edition" amps ! , The Blackstar is 3 times more AFFORDIBLE than an ORANGE CR 60 - cr 35 too ! May get one !
would be nice to compare the katana 50 to this amp ... same dinky magnet 12 inch speaker (could be the same)... small cab.. same wattage. Another thought.. There is almost no solid state (not modeling) gigable amps anymore. The roland JC series, Larger roland blues cubes (not cheap), The orange crush 60/120 or the super crush 100, the quilter Avitor amp, .. Blackstar could easily make a debut 100 amp with an all analog three channels instead of two, 100W, (class D) a larger cab and a speaker with a heavier magnet and a lot of players would like such a simple gigable cheap amp .
what I would like to see (and hear) is a simple switch between clean and overdrive channels with the optional footswitch; no pedalboard involved...bare bones...thanks.
SECOND ? The amp sounds pretty good but I expect the homework they did on their pedals took care of the preamp in this pedal. Excellent amp for the money. I have an old Plexi but I could get thru a gig with this without any grief, lol 😇
Not generally a fan of Blackstar but this actually sounded pretty good to me. Big question is if it is too loud for a kid to use as a home practice amp? My Rocker 15 at 0.5 w is loud so was considering a Katana but would prefer a simple amp and pedals rather than apps and menus.
You know when you look in the fridge and it's packed with food and you feel like there's nothing you want to eat; or scrolling on Netflix where there's so much to choose from but there's nothing you want to watch - I feel that way about amps, dammit! What I really need is a "random guy in the internet comments" signature amplifier.
@@SanDimas234 My 10 watt Maxim amp (first and currently only) begs to differ... I want to buy a new entry level amp that I can record with, but can't make a decision!

A freakin' W.Y.S.I.W.Y.G. sans-digital no frills all analog SS amps with a crafted multi stage Mosfet preamp?!! Yes please! I'll be having all of that! Hell... For $250?!! Buy two for the best & most affordable pedalboard stereo gigging rig out there righ now IMO! Nothing to snobbishly scoff at here and a whole lot of great amp to love. Well done Blackstar Cheers and salute! (downs Waterford Crystal snifter of brandy) (smashes it against the fireplace) Damn... That snifter cost me more than what this amp will. For me the Orange Crush 35rt is more of a competitor in the same range and features than the boss Katana.
Tone's by far nicer on this one than most all at this price...
Is it time for Andertons to get a pleck machine? Enjoyed the show. 🏴👍👍👍Respect to you fellas
Awesome little sign off jam!
@@jnixo9900weber will do it.
Love my aged lemon Epi! Would love to give this new amp a whirl
Katana 50 is one alternative, but wouldn’t the Orange Crush 35RT be an analogue contender?
Orange has more of a British rock sound. All depends on what you're into.
-Cheers ! 👍
3:52 omg I just watched Reservoir Dogs last night lol
Seems to be okay.
- a glowing review. 👍😀
I love my 50 r.
How's the clean headroom, loud enough for gigging?
What’s the old saying? “Give a Dane a Sire and a Blackstar” and you’ll have tone for days.
Pete is so good. 😊
would be nice to compare the katana 50 to this amp ... same dinky magnet 12 inch speaker (could be the same)... small cab.. same wattage.
Another thought.. There is almost no solid state (not modeling) gigable amps anymore.
The roland JC series, Larger roland blues cubes (not cheap), The orange crush 60/120 or the super crush 100, the quilter Avitor amp, ..
Blackstar could easily make a debut 100 amp with an all analog three channels instead of two, 100W, (class D) a larger cab and a speaker with a heavier magnet and a lot of players would like such a simple gigable cheap amp .
what I would like to see (and hear) is a simple switch between clean and overdrive channels with the optional footswitch; no pedalboard involved...bare bones...thanks.
nice jam!
2 × blackstar r50 with the boss me90 ( stereo)..what do you think?.. good option for small live gigs?
Black star debut 50 or Laney iron heart foundry 60. Comparison please! Thanks!
Yes I need this as well
Are they making a 50w head of these amps? They sound really good.
Fresh cut Captain!! :)))))
A two channel fifty watt amp with a twelve inch speaker, effects loop, and line out is a beginner amp? 🤔
Same form factors as the Studio 10. Clever.
i remember pete demoing the Mesa 5/50 express. Kind of the tube version of this amp. I think I would rather cary the blackstar.
I you feel that way about the things you listed you probably have enough stuff😅
@@SanDimas234 My 10 watt Maxim amp (first and currently only) begs to differ... I want to buy a new entry level amp that I can record with, but can't make a decision!
Yeah, I hear you. Just too much food then🤣. I bought a new amp this year, first in about 20 yrs. Took me almost a year to decide🤣. Really helps if you live near a good shop to try things. (I'm about an hour away from andertons luckily).
@@SanDimas234 I think that's the next step! I just have to try a bunch. I might be demo-ing for a long while though! 💀
@@C33Fernandez Yeah. Honestly take your time. I was wanting a nice small lunchbox head and cab and ended up with a Katana artist🤣 Almost the opposite😆.
D*mn! that was Captain in the beginning? Polyphia better watch out. I just bought the 15e didnt consider it to be a practice amp. It sounded really good to be a practice amp 😅
What happened to the Captains home made pedalboard?
Clicked because of the sexy swagger of the thumb nail. And stayed because of the….. well, NGL, the sexy swagger.
Just tried one, the sound is fantastic. Goodbye vox, hello blackstar
Well done Blackstar
Cheers and salute!
(downs Waterford Crystal snifter of brandy)
(smashes it against the fireplace)
Damn...
That snifter cost me more than what this amp will.
Real Deal Rock & Roll don't care 'bout no valves!!!
Or antique Irish Crystal apparently...
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Punk AF till the last😅
Cheers Capt'n and Pete!
Ha!
LMAO!
I don't like Blackstar amps. At all. But i do like seeing you guys jamming and having fun.
I love Silverline! If you will learn it then you need nothing but FS-10 footswitch to play gigs.
@@damasterkarej I'm a hard rock/ metal guy. Blackstar just doesn't do it for me
@David Merlin a 5150 pedal into a clean channel is not the same as an actual 5150, sport. Do not pick a battle you can't win.
@@shreder75 The HT and HT metal series wll do hi gain all day and will tighen up even more with a TS thrown in on low gain and higher output!
@@markdoolan3424 i had an ht 5. Hated it. I've played through many blackstar amps in music stores. I don't like them at all.
Sounds plenty good to me
Which amplifier sounds better to you boss katana 50 mk2 or blackstar Debut 50R?
Well, it looks good.
Where did the decibel-o-meter go?
I watch TheGuitarGeek and he claims the Clean Channel of the 50R breaks up way too soon, therefore a loss of Head Room. Do you find this to be true? Also, do you carry the Authorized Blackstar Covers the the Debut 50R with the Blackstar LOGO? Thanks guys.
I find the HT 1, 5, 20 being hybrid do a dark and warm distortion. To warm. Not enough treble even with boost and EQ pedals. Is this similar?
That intro with the SE SS sounded harsh. Didn't enjoy that and not a good advertisement for the guitar.
Pete sounded great as usual.
Is it me, or have you removed the “db” meter and display?
Because without it we can’t see how loud (or NOT so loud) an amp is!
PUT IT BACK!
can you practice with a band ?
then i buy this beautiful vintage looking amp!😊
Up to your usual shenandertons.
I don’t know why, but when I listen back audio from this video and compare this to PMTVUK review, then I’m sorry, but your audio sounds quite bad.. :/
What guitar is the captain using? Is it a prs silver sky se or the normal one?
