Follow Senior Textile Conservator Susana Fajardo as she works on a sequinned clown costume worn by 20th-century clown Jackie Sloan.
Sound designer and performance-maker Julie Rose Bower has documented Susana's steps using ambisonic sound, letting us get closer to the object than ever before.
See the painstakingly delicate processes involved as dust is carefully removed, corrosion is reduced, and sequins are gently cleaned.

Can you tell me the name of the rubber that she uses?
when a clown costume looks more haute couture and glamorous than my whole weardrobe
The sad case of most of modern fashion I'm afraid (not all obviously)
Well at least yours are easier to clean right 😅😅😅😅😅😅
Weardrobe that’s a new one for me 🤣
And mine!
🤡
“conserving a clown costume” is what I call it when I’m doing my laundry
LMAO
bro this cheered me up a lil :)
I was about to make the exact same comment oh lord
Self owned
Thank you, this the exact kind of content I came to read here at the comments.
Wish there was more info on the history of the piece included and a full shot of it displayed
No information. Very unsatisfying video! .......How old is it? For whom was it made? (Who wore it and when?) Any existing photos?
Read the description
@@marquamfurniture 6:40 tsk, tsk.
@@marquamfurniture Jackie Sloan wore this spectacular ‘sac’ at Bertram Mills Circus, but it was made in Paris by Gérard Vicaire (1927-2018) ‘costumier to the stars’. The duo of an immaculately dressed white-face clown and a red-nose Auguste in baggy trousers and oversized shoes was an essential part of 20th century circus. Sadly there are no photos I've found of Sloan or any other clown wearing this piece but there are photos of him wearing similar pieces probably by the same designer.
It was created in 1950 so its 70 years old. This information can be found in the V&A archives online which is free to the public.
@@brianabailey1283 Thanks kindly, Briana! Great background info.
The clown that wore this must've been the most posh clown ever in history. It's gorgeous!
Looks more glamorous than anything I own😂
@@catarinavalentine1026 We are the actual clowns 🤡

I’m going rather crazy with curiosity regarding how it was made. That thing looks like haute couture...and it’s a clown costume!?!?
Same thing in this case and the costume had to stand up to way more use.
It is couture. There is a caption with the atelier toward the beginning of the video.
European whiteface circus clowns continue to wear extravagant costumes. Look up the costumes of Francois Fratellini for example. Lots of amazing pieces.
@@BrianFoleyDirector Thanks for the recommendation! I look forward to seeing them.
@@user-mv9tt4st9k So, those sequins were hand-stitched?!?!
My head is spinning.
When your whole life is a joke but you still got the sassyness and elegance
That's such a beautiful costume! I can't imagine how gorgeous it must have looked in it's prime
All the people talking about how their in surprise of how this is a clown costume
Have obviously never seen how delicate and gorgeous vintage clown costumes are
I'm sure you're right. At the same time, "vintage clown costumes" is not one's typical daily subject matter in or out of school!
It's absolutely stunning, I cannot believe the amount of detail that went into that one costume alone.
I would pay to see a clown that wears that couture. A walking masterpiece
We need more ASMR videos like this! So stunning and relaxing. The work that goes into preserving one item it’s incredible ❤️🙏🏻
amazing costume!! I can't believe how beautiful it is!
also: purple sequins + purple gloves = perfect
I would recommend using a mesh filter on the vacuum nozzle, in case there are any loose sequins!
@@atmakali9599 You can't really do that with museum pieces actually. If the sequins become detached, they should be kept in a separate container like a small ziploc bag so they are kept with the original costume.
@@atmakali9599 aight I get it. Begone, troll.
@@anne-sophiekuentz6875
Good idea actually !
She doesn’t need to, that’s a conservation vacuum and very low powered. She would have examined the piece carefully before beginning and would already have identified any loose sequins.
@@atmakali9599 why are you being so kinda negative everywhere in this comment section '_'
Now this is the best ASMR ever. Period. There is a perpose to the sounds! Actual work and not just random ticks and clicks
What kind of haute couture clown? This is amazing.
These V&A videos are like therapy.....
The amount of care and love and patience and respect poured over these items, be it a hat, a book or.......a clown costume is truly inspiring.
The sound of that tissue paper gives me a rather satisfying frisson 😋
Please post more!!
Such a special patience it must take to be a conservator, to go over such a huge surface area with so much care and attention!
Wow such a beautiful piece. The sequins have such great sounds too. And her voice is really nice.
I would absolutely watch a 1hr long version of this because I already do that for other ASMR videos and I just love clown costumes now.
This clown must have been the Liberace of clowns! I’d love to know more history or how it looked once on.
Wonderful video, can’t wait for you to open up again ⭐️
I wish this was longer. Could easily be a mini documentary..........history of costume, more techniques used to clean it, total mam hours it took to restore etc, etc.
@@atmakali9599 seems like you're not really having it easy these days... I hope things get better for you soon.
@Michelle, I'd love the same. Just took a couple minutes of watching this video to get me to subscribe, and this is the first video from the channel that I've ever watched❤
Art and calm, thank you!!
i’m a simple person. i see “clown” in the title, i click
What a beautiful, detailed work! Thank you for sharing!
So methodical, I could sit there all day & watch her precision
It would take a lot of patience to do this job. Personally, I'd lose my mind.
Love this! I’m getting my daily dose of asmr plus all this juicy behind the scenes of a museum - and omg I’d never think that’s a clown costume - genius
Your voice is so soothing and I love your gentle touch, care, and compassion for this piece
You nailed it 100%
So this is where my costume's been, I've been looking all over for it
I’d love to see the full piece on display👀❤️
omg thank you for cleaning my suit!
This is my type of ASMR, none of that whispering shit with a ton of mouth sounds. Thank you for this, I would love an entire series
i love how she displayed the brush and vacuum, good visual asmr
What a work of art! Thank you so much!
What a beautiful costume
i’ve rewatched this so many times 😭😭 i need more
Its so cool that People just find these kind of things from the Past, It is really cool!
So beautiful I had no idea how ornate and detailed they were.
Oh I've missed your asmr videos ! So good 🙇♀️
the sheer patience wow
The fact that her gloves match the costume is even more satisfying
Fascinating technique. I was hypnotized.
This is a good representation of my clown ass life and me trying to fix it again
It’s so cool. Your work is an art. Thanks for posting.
When she stuffs the garment with the paper (the sound☺️☺️☺️☺️)
This was really cool!
I don't believe I've ever found a clown costume so beautiful before...
I would’ve worn this at work everyday in another life
Finally a suggestion, that's not annoying or weird. Happy Valentine's Day Y'all 😂💕
What a beautiful piece, I whish there would be nice shot that shows all of it! Wish I could visit, but being french and the state of the world being what it is... An ASMR tour of some of the displayed items would be a super cool vid though!
Costume fit for the Met Gala!💜👌🏻
This is pretty spot on for natural or unintentional ASMR, just a person with a nice voice explaining a detailed task with nice camera work and sound quality. Great job equalizing the vacuum cleaner volume, I was skeptical that could be done! 👍🏻
One suggestion would be to try to film during times the work space is empty, there were some loud bangs and clangs in the background which were not great when having headphones in 😖
The part from 6:19 to the end was lovely 🤩
I admire the people who made this.
I watch Calculus discussions on youtube but this gets on my recommended
✨Relaxing art restoration✨
You would really have to love your job to do something this laborious and painstaking...
Too bad they are other sounds at the background during my favorite part 😭
wow!!!! a beautifu1 costume and vid, tysm
That’s beautiful!
That costume is beautiful. I’d love to see what it looked like on the clown.
So many sequins!
This is BRILLIANT😪😴💤
to prevent any loose parts of the costume from being sucked into the vacuum, a piece of tulle over the nozzle of the vacuum secured with a rubber band would be helpful
Dang, those some chunky sequins, this thing must weigh a ton. What are they made of?
Usually painted brass
Could be shell by the look of it
Nitrocellulose.
@@cecilyerker im thinking theyre the old ones from years ago
Brass and sprayed paint.
I have several costumes with brass sequins but they are 60 yrs old
Holy moly I wonder how long it took to make that
I could watch this for hours
Wow this is a beautiful costume
That's the ASMR that I love to hear and watch also ! I never liked asmr videos.
I would have loved to hear more about the history of the garment???!!!!!! 🤔
If the paint has lost color why not use a blower and a vacuum? Instead of a brush.? Just use a brush for the dust that won't come off? It may help keep the color on better? Have you tried a gum eraser as well? I've had sequins melt on me that were made out of yelliten
Such a meticulous job!
We deserve 16 minutes
I have worked on and created quite a few white face Clown costumes (which this is) over the years in my alter ego the Stitch Witch; I come from a line of well know Circus clowns and a circus family, I still design and create costumes for circus. I also remember the white face clown who wore this costume; atelier vicaire is the epitome of costumes for cabaret and circus.
what to study to do this as a job 😍
How amazing is this?! ❤️
As a former theater kid, I can smell this costume oof
Once I read clown, the “tinglies” went away
I wonder if any of the people who previousky ownedand wore these outfits and costumes knew that one day they're clothes would be very carefully and lovingly handles and cared for by museums.
It is a beautiful piece
the fact that all the little sequence were probably sewn in one by one by hand.
Question, it seems like some of these parts (such as the hook and eye closure) could be more easily cleaned If they were removed from the garment. It is my understanding that historically garments were cleaned in pieces to some extent, is there a reason why the conservator has chosen to keep the garment together while cleaning it? I assume it must have to do with the sequins...
This needs to be a longer video
I need Sasha Velour to wear this piece
IT'S TOTALLY HER BRAND
@@stahppls2293 and then snatch us with a haut e couture mime beat? Ugh, I would live.
Anyone knows what the sequins are made of? And how did they paint it?
Beautiful costume

very interesting!
When a clown costume gets more care and affection than you 🙃😂
ASMR .... "first I will use a vacuum" 😂 Nice video, though. Would've loved an indulgently long version of this for chillin' to.
omg bianca's dress :0
i am only young, but when i grow i will work for the V&A museum.
Ok you museum archival folks, a major textile problem. I have a 1930s-40s, red, Japanese kimono I had hanging because I love looking at it but unknown to me was a freshly placed glue trap to catch mice. Hold on.......my beautiful kimono somehow “fell” (my husband admits to nothing and hates my kimono collection) and some of the hem plopped into the thick glue trap and now has thick, sticky glue on it. I delicately removed the trap from the kimono but it still has thick glue that needs to be removed. I live in the D.C. area and was thinking to call someone at the Smithsonian but I don’t know whom to ask or where to start. Any suggestions?
this is a long shot, but you're very likely to find people to help at an anime or Japanese culture convention like Katsucon. I have a Yukata (cotton, summertime kimono. still made in Japan, just modern)- I wash it on a delicate cycle, and sometimes in a lingerie bag- probably best to hang to dry. but with one from the 30s/40s I would be careful and probably ask people at a convention- since there are a lot that show up that know more about weaponry, clothing, and culture from Japan.
I can never laugh at someone who would wear such a beautiful costume. It makes the circus seem like the runway.
I want to see the display
Wish I knew what this looked like in it's hey day!
i need to wear this
Does anyone know what vacuum she is using?
It's called a Museum Vac
