I think with Yeri's debut, it was partically because she was 14 at the time (but SM has debuted several idols at that age) and possibly because they felt she wasn't ready at the time. From what I've heard, Red Velvet's debut was pushed up sooner than initially planned. 2014 just wasn't a good year for SM, they had Jessica noticeably absent from SNSD schedules and then later leaving SNSD, Sulli of F(X) was having issues with online bullies and took a hiatus from activities (then later leaving the group as well), and they had Kris leaving EXO and filing a lawsuit against the company. So its possible SM debuted the group earlier in order to soften the blow the company was taking at the time and distract from everything that was happening.
That's pretty much the same thing I have gathered over the years. They hurried Red Velvet's debut to try to change the narrative from the negatives with SM's other girl groups in 2014, but ironically they almost blew it because it was so rushed that the debut wasn't hyped like SM would normally do and by SM standards the group struggled at first (Most other companies would have been ecstatic with such a debut). Adding Yeri also caused backlash because SM did a poor job of giving the reason Yeri was added later and it looked to many to be a desperation move to shake things up after their debut wasn't as good as SM likely wanted. That whole 2014 to 2015 era at SM was a mess. Something was very wrong internal to SM's management at that time as they went from one preventable trainwreck to another and all of them largely seemed to be the result of poor communication between artists, group managers, and executive management that let situation get out of hand when they probably could have been handled better with better communication. I suspect some people who knew there was a problem hid it from superiors, artists didn't trust their bosses or even bandmates, and executive management seems to have grown really detached from the artists and frontline managers, so they had no sense they had major problems forming within many of their groups that would devalue the brands they had built.
That's actually not true at all. Yeri was always supposed to debut with the group, but right before Happiness, the Korean Fair Trade Commission changed the labor laws making it illegal for Kpop trainees under the International age of 16 to work any more than 7 hours a day, 5 days a week. This would have been extremely disruptive as Idols sometimes have to work very long hours, especially where video shoots and travel time are involved. There is an SM Rookies video from 2104 where you see Yeri watching the Happiness video and suddenly you hear Wendy and Joy say to her "Come on, Let's go practice!" It takes a LOT of preparation to debut a new group. Anyone who thinks they rushed Red Velvet's just to cover up a "scandal" is misinformed.
I think Automatic is not as much talked about because it was actually a double title track with Ice Cream Cake, and seeing as the latter was much more energetic and shares the name of the mini album, people just assumed that was the title track and Automatic was just a b-side. Super excited for you to listen to more of Red Velvet, they've got my favorite discography in kpop. If you do First Listen Fridays for them, I'd be happy with any album because all of them are so good. I tried listing my favorites but it ended up being like 7 albums, so that wasn't very helpful lol. I say a good way to do it is chronological order so you can see their growth :)
They also didn't actually promote Automatic like a title track either, since they'd only perform the first verse and choruses. They'd only perform ICC in full which I find weird.

Oh I see Yujin is now accompanied by Minju 💜 Wendy's legendary "Shine on me" part in Happiness. 💙 Also rookie Wendy with her forehead showing is the prettiest for me, but she's actually always pretty in my eyes. But that part is the reason she is my bias 💙 Automatic still remains one of my favorite Velvet songs. So sensual and smooth and the vocals 😭 Ice Cream Cake started the creepy feeling on their song lol but my fave part in this song was the rap part in the bridge. I once saw a reaction video of two women who were watching the song with subtitles and let's say one was much more naive than the other and though the lyrics were cute but odd, and the friend whispered to her what some of the allusions were and her friend went so wide-eyed. If I find it, I will link it later, as it is pretty funny. It must have been funny recording it as I would bet that Wendy with having lived in the US and Canada might have realized some of the song's cheekiness that the Korean members might not have known as some of the lyrical imagery might not have come across in a more conservative society.

I think you should really check out albums cause that's where they really shine imo and barely on title tracks. Not saying that their titles are bad, its just the bsides are almost always usually better than their titles. Id recommend Mini albums: RBB, ReVe Festival Day 1, and ReVe Festival Finale Full album: Perfect Velvet (I guess every reveluv would recommend this including me) 11:20 also its not silk. Its Velvet. I think you should really check out albums cause that's where they really shine imo and barely on title tracks. Not saying that their titles are bad, its just the bsides are almost always usually better than their titles.
