Charlamange wasn’t in New York in the 90s he was in Moncks Corner according to Shook Ones it’s wild arguing over actually being there. Andrew is speaking from experience
Wu tangs influence is undeniable they created culture - hoodies , timberlands and Clarks made huge inroads due to Wu tangs stylistic and musical influence . I'm the same age as shultz and can't believe he was not aware of Wu tangs rise. Even as 10 and 11 year olds we were all into wu tang . Their influence goes beyond music . They also were the first group to really start branding into fashion (Wu wear) ,
As an outsider, it's kinda sad to hear New Yorkers say this stuff about Wu Tang. It's like going to the south and hearing southerns say Outkast was just for the suburbs.
The second he said: "Method Man is not in Wu-Tang" he completely discredited himself. He continued to discredit himself when he revealed that he wasn't even aware that Wu-Tang and Dipset came from 2 different eras. LMAO
I’m 42 and from NYC Wu was HUGE here. Andrew doesn’t seem to be that into hiphop regardless of talking Ebonics plus he was like 10,11 years old when WU blew so that’s slightly before his time
I think you made his point when you said WAS. I’m not as old as you so I think my generation appreciates more the 2000s sound of Dipset, Lox and Gunit. I think now and days people put them as the OG NY group.
@@TheShop90sKids and im from queens, I love Wu Tang, Mobb Deep and Boot camp. those are my favoirte crews. ofcourse im an 80s child. and I LOVE Rakim, LL cool J, Krs one.. This 20-30 year old age group of today really believe ONLY THEIR TIME existed?
Wu was more impactful because at a time when the mainstream was being taken over by the west with it's nostalgic 70's sound that felt familiar and was thus more easily marketable.....Wu came with original GRITTY hard beats and different styles and brought life to the NYC hip hop scene. Nas was putting on his work, BIG came along shortly thereafter, but when it felt like the east was being nudged out of our top spot WU came through and reminded EVERYBODY where the art originated....Protect Ya fuckin' Neck
Thank you somebody finally said it, for some reason a lot of these people gloss over The Wu movement, and immediately give Big all the credit for bringing the East Coast back, when Wu had already dropped 36 Chambers 🤦🏾♂️
Wu Tang built the basis for real rap music. It helps many industries survive and thrive. These were the fella that helped build the 90's and 2000's as well as Nasty NAS.
Andrew wasnt old enough to witness Wu’s reign to even have an opinion on this… Wu was just as big as Biggie/Bad Boy in that era, Wu’s HEIGHT as a group was from ‘93 - ‘99, after that their impact drizzled off & it became more about the individual members
Wu-Tang and Migos don’t belong in the same stratosphere. Migos have some solid records but Wu-Tang has at least 4-5 classic Concept Albums. They’re the Pink Floyd of Hip Hop.
this is a dumb generational convo.... if u were between 14-25 when Enter the 36 Chambers came out, u never had any doubt how NY and how impactful Wu-Tang was
You can't compare eras. Hip-hop is young. We still have some of the founders alive today. That can't be said about most big genres. Nothing like how Hip-Hop became so mainstream that it's basically dominating in pop. They are pop, for some artists, obviously. But that's the reach it has had. Hip-Hop was still growing in the 80s and early 90s. Mid-late 90s it blew up massively. You had collabs with pop artists more than ever, which says a lot. You saw massive sales, radio plays, music videos, lots of money. That didn't exist on that level before the mid 90s. No where near the same. The contracts were different when you go back. So many got screwed. Once they managed to start getting slightly better deals (still meant you owed a lot back despite receiving advances)
Not NYC related, but for any Hip Hop head living west of St. Louis, Bone Thugs N Harmony was the biggest rap group back in those days. And if OutKast and Wu- Tang are #1 and #2 Bone gotta be #3
Shoutout to Carlos from Classic Material NY, that Mobb Deep Mics shirt is his creation. I spoke to him about it once because The Source retroactively gave The Infamous 5 Mics. What kept me from buying the shirt was that it shows the OG rating of 4.5 Mics. I did buy his Nas- Illmatic hoody with 5 Mics. Same colors.
Diddy did own a lot of airplay in the back half of the 90s but aside from Biggie he didn’t represent the rugged boom bap sound that defined the decade from 93 on. Wu, Nas, Jay, Biggie, Tribe, Gang Starr, Redman, Fat Joe, The Roots, Fugees, Mobb Deep all got more respect than 90% of what Diddy had on commercial radio for the true Hip-Hop heads.
ive lived in Queens all my life.. during the 90s, your're guna tell me ppl wasnt rocking with Wu Tang in NYC? lol. Dipset, G unit, th'ats commercialized rap crap
Fat Joe early 90s and still relevant in hip hop, Big L, KRS One, Lox, LL was still dropping shit, NAS by far had an impact at that time. Illmatic was bonkers, his story telling was bars and bars above. Big L was a beast. I can’t say who was more impactful, but these are names to consider and it depended on where you was from in my opinion.
Wu Tang, Boot Camp, Gangstarr, Mobb Deep.. these were my favorite things.. Im from queens.. you 20 year olds really believe that ONLY your time period exists?
New Yorkers lessen wu tang in these conversations cause it's Staten Island based. Had wutang been from any of the respected hip hop Burroughs then they would think differently than Shultz opinion
I grew up listening to Dipset but once I went and listened to Wu’s discography, collectively and individually, there was only one winner. Wu were more talented, creative and impactful than Dipset. Wu transcended hip-hop. Maybe the hood f’d with Dipset more but overall no rap group is touching Wu. The Lox beat Dipset in a versus but you know if they had gone up against the Wu it would have been a different story entirely.
They keep saying Juicy but Juicy wasn't even the best song on the Ready to die album. But Ready to die was better than 36 chambers but CREAM was probably the best song from out of all the songs on those albums.
NY NATIVE HERE. Wu was impactful but BIGGIE was WAY MORE impactful. Charla and that chicks points were all trash & their rebuttals made no sense. Just because g unit, biggie and them came after they’re dismissed? Biggie had I LOVE IT WHEN YOU CALL ME BIG POPPA !!! Jay z made everyone fall in love with NY and proud. Idk, weird but I’m going to go with the NYers on the show on what was and is popping in NY. I live in Canada and grew up outside of Toronto. I can TOTALLY see what they saying about Wu being globally popular but necessarily resonating in the city. Especially since everyone I know who loves Wu-tang is suburban and white.😅 Also, people who aren’t from that city need to stop telling people from that city how they should feel about it. Prime example non-Raptors fans and non-Canadians telling me that Vince is the greatest Raptor not knowing we don’t fuck with that guy like that! “He put you on the map!” Bitch, we been on the map sorry you never looked.
