The Truth about China's Wet Markets!

- China's wet markets are going through something of a renaissance, as more and more tourists seek them out in order to get a real experience of the places that they're visiting. So, I went to one such market in the coastal city of Qingdao, known as the Tuandao Farmers Market; a place known for its incredibly fresh seafood.
And at this particular market, you can have your food cooked on-site. It doesn't get much fresher than that. So, take a look at what was on offer, and find out what I bought and ate.

No mate, not all the 'Wet Markets' in China are as organised and sanitary, as the one in this video.
Nice try though.
Starfish, interesting. Never thought they would be edible.
Like sea urchins. Who'd have thought they're edible. But they are.
I didn't know that either. I'm Chinese 😂.
不是所有品种的海星都能吃啦,就像河豚🐡一样,有的能吃有的真吃不了一点😂
just because it’s edible doesn’t mean you should eat it, pretty much all the recent pandemics have come from these wet markets
@@SoosRamirez1might as well stop eating seafood i guess
Here are some starfish facts: Starfish or sea stars belong to the Echinoderm phylum that include sea urchins, sand dollars, sea cucumbers as well as sea lilies. While we tend to visualize them as having just a total of five arms, these organisms refuse to be limited by our assumptions when it comes to their number of limbs. With more than 2,000 species of them, there are individuals that present with 10, 20 or even 50 arms! It has a pretty impressive way of eating! After attaching its body to the chosen prey, it extends its stomach out through its mouth. Enzymes from the stomach then begin to digest the food. This allows the nutritious grub to pass inside the stomach, which in turn retracts back into the body where digestion is complete.
While sea stars don’t exactly see like we do, they definitely aren’t blind. Instead of eyeballs, sea stars have tiny eye ‘spots’ embedded beneath the skin of each arm. Although the spots are certainly small, these spots are actually visible if you look very closely at the end of each limb. Usually appearing as a dot that is either black or reddish in coloration, these spots are photosensitive, enabling sea stars to recognize shapes as they navigate over the seafloor and around both peers and prey.
fascinating
About starfish arms, each "arm" also contains hundreds, if not thousands of "feet". These starfish feet are for moving around, carrying/holding the food, etc. Their mouth is at the bottom center of the main body, while their eyes are on each tip of their arms.
Love wet markets here in China 😁
Oh, I also see you in tiktok post videos about your school food from Monday to Friday 😂

Oh wonderful footage; how I wish I could shop there too!
congrats 司徒! for the 3rd prize in 5th international short video competition (Zheng Zhou 2023)
Thanks Jimmy! I found out today.
The seafoods look so delicious. My mouth is watering, hahaha...
Would be such a fun experience coming here!
Also Stu, your Chinese continues to impress me! You know all the names for all the different types of seafood 😮
It's cool to see what a boiled sea star looks like. For some reason, I didn't think that the arms could be so easily broken off after simply being boiled or that there was anything other than muscle in them.
They're still a bit spiny, a bit like crab in the sense that you can hurt your fingers trying to get it open.
Ccp has clamped down hard on poor wet markets. Now they are very good like this one 😊
I’m subscribed; excellent work
Thanks Daniel! Welcome aboard
Even if you try to go during the non-touristy times, tourists going there isn't a bad thing! It's a great thing that a market like this gets a lot of visitors because it's all part of the cultural experience of Qingdao. You want local places, that put their heart and soul into what they do, to thrive! Mantis shrimp are incredible creatures! Despite their name mantis shrimp, they aren't actually shrimp! They're in the order Stomatopoda while shrimp are in the order Decapoda! Their eyes, which work independently, are on mobile stalks and have three focal points each. They target prey very efficiently! And their front claws are also designed to make them effective killing machines!
These specialized appendages produce one of the fastest recorded movements in the animal kingdom! A mantis shrimp’s punch has the same acceleration as a 22-caliber bullet, delivering a blow of 15,000 newtons, a force equal to more than 2,500 times the mantis shrimp’s weight. That power is pretty impressive, especially for such a little guy! Their punch can easily break quarter-inch glass!
Better start with those less spicy like starfish. Otherwise, the freshness will be covered up by the chilli 🌶️
Well...can't say the truth about the markets when you're in the complete wrong part of the country.
从来没吃过海星
好想去这样的海鲜市场奥
You enjoying your life in china than the UK
Enjoy!
as a Chinese,我还没有吃过海星😔,羡慕海边的孩子
Good idea to cook at the market. I never try those seafood. Sea star is very interesting. 😊

They were robbing you blind back there😂
Animals really have it quite bad dont they
China is not the only place with wet markets. You find them all over Asia. You can see some in Spain as well. "Wet market" is a name given them by the west because of the profusion of produce which need to be kept moist or in water.
I quick search on wiki shows that the term " wet market" started to be used in singapore, not by the west.
“Wet market” is a term given to traditional markets that also sells fresh meat and seafood. It is a term created after the invention of supermarkets by the west.
Envy you! Food paradise, China!
In Singapore our wet markets don't have stalls that cook the fresh food for you on the spot, that's such an ingenious and convenient idea.
Have . . . especially a fish hawker stall in Toa Payoh. Instead of ordering buffet (usually for 100-150 people), my wife would order fish/prawns, etc, from this particular stall (he'd then ask his friend at nearby coffee-shop to cook for us), and then have the cooked food delivered to our place, usually be noon. The food are better (in terms of taste), fresher and cheaper than if you order from buffet companies (buffet companies charge $25-$30/pac and for 150 people might cost up to $4500 but it's not the cost but more often they "under-delivered" as in giving you inadequate amount of food).
能理解啦,主要我们这边地方大一点。
基本上所有的海鲜市场周边都有饭店提供加工服务。当然体验有好有坏,有个别地方的一些商家会有让人唾弃的宰客现象,所以有时会先看网上评论再去消费。
Thanks for sharing and surfacing the truth. 👏👍
faster, faster, does Bob try fresh sea food this time?
Seafood lovers paradise right here. Best ever!

Very clean and big wet market. Greetings from Germany ❤
Hello! Which city in Germany?
I like the way you say gala.😂👍👍❤
You can probably sing it ga la ga la ga la
Since sausages are made of intestines, both names were right😂
I’m curious what phone you use, saw it in the video for 2 seconds. Also wants to know foreigners like you, living in China for a long time, normally choose foreign brands like Samsung, apple, whatever, which are easy to access play store apps, aka using android and Google, or, pick a Chinese brand like huawei, etc. but need to download apps manually when in Europe or the states? 😅
I use a Xiaomi 13 now. I used to use Smartisan, that's the best phone I've ever used but unfortunately the company went out of business. Xiaomi (and previously Smartisan) can install Google Services so you can add the play store for when you are abroad. Hope that helps.
@@TravelinChina manually install google service? So that means if I could have someone ‘smuggled’ a huawei mate to the uk, I can install all the apps via play store like those Europe version phones? The google service you mentioned, it’s an app itself as well? Many thanks.
I don't think you can install it on Huawei handsets. It's not an app, it's more of a settings update.@@ringhyy
@@TravelinChinaoh, a setting update only. But xiaomi is available across the Europe, so I presume xiaomi can automatically use google service when in Europe. 😢
I'm not really an expert in this, so I don't know all the ins and outs. All I know is, if you buy a Xiaomi in China, it doesn't have google services pre-installed, so you have to do it manually. In Europe, presumably it ships with google services pre-installed.
I’m from Maryland, USA and I couldn’t help but notice at around 2:58…. ARE THOSE BLUE CRABS????? I know they are an invasive species in the Mediterranean and other places around the world, but I didn’t know that people in China eat them! Well, they ARE the best crabs in the world, so it’s understandable! 😂
Not sure whether they're blue crabs. But I wouldn't be surprised if they were. There was a lot of non-native seafood on sale.
Wow, all look so delicious! But, 青岛啤酒?有加“料”的哦😯。
不是所有青岛的啤酒都是青岛牌啤酒啦,有很多当地小厂的鲜酿啤酒也好好味
Let's do some real job !😁😆🤣
