Tsingtao beer is authentic German beer. The brewery was originally built by German in Qingdao.
Correct! Qingdao was a German 'Concession' when they cut up the 'Chinese Water Melon'.
And my high school was right next to the Qingdao beer brewery, oh the smell.....

It’s interesting that your childhood memory is grilled cheese and chicken noodle. I think in the us it’s much more commonly tomato soup with grilled cheese. It’s definitely a great combo!

So I visited these places when I was in first grade elementary school, before they opened up shops and were just streetside stalls. I would eat there with my dad and his friends at ~2am after they finished playing basketball and drinking. However these stalls were a huge problem with the city government, and they were getting shut down frequently. But the way my dad conveyed this idea was strange. He told me the “mayor” was someone who personally drove around at night in a white van to find unpermitted stall owners and beat them up. I asked him if the mayor did this alone or with a group of people. He said there would be a group of people, but they were mostly there to hype up the mayor. The mayor himself had to be very strong. Since that day I became afraid of eating at the wonton stall, worried that the mayor of Qingdao would come to kick my ass.
