Everytime I've made a vid like this RUclips has removed my thumbnail lol let's see if it stays this time (I have a feeling it'll stay)
I just came to this video because it's hilarious to me everytime your videos pop up for me, they have been about butts 😂

I love the fact that Nightwing is a male character who's sexuality is portrayed as apparent but non-threatening, but at the same time I do find it rather uncomfortable that his sexual assaults go basically unexplored or unaddressed throughout a lot of his appearances.
You are so right, I recently watched a video called something like 'the top 10 worst things that happened to Nightwing' and it wasn't even mentioned
Plural? Everyone knows about the time Grayson tried to deal with her own trauma by writing Grayson getting raped, but I don't remember the others. Though there probably were stolen kisses or ass slaps I've forgotten.
That honestly happens a lot in DCU where rape, sexual assault, sexual harassment etc. happens and then in the next panel or comics it’s never talked about again…like most of the time we don’t even see characters get therapy for the trauma-it’s like it never existed
Agreed. And even when this happens to a woman is treated as "normal" but when it happens to a guy is weird and doesnt have importance. Both ways are so wrong

I love how Sasha examines the societal implications of Nightwing's butt. Most comic channels would never think of doing that!
Trust me, on youtube you'll see a deep dive or a trail off about anything. But Nightwing's ass is definitely a first.
Dick Grayson taught me:
You can be both a lover and a fighter.
Taking care of yourself is the most attractive thing you can do for yourself.
As long as Dick Grayson is laughing with us about his butt, I’m good. Like he know he looks good and wants to show it off. Consent should be key. Unless the writer want to go in depth about objectification, boundaries, consent, keep it light hearted
"I did the research, now I get to talk about BUTTZ! Woo!" - Sasha Wood, in a buttshell.
First off Sasha, I love hearing a woman talk about this. As a guy, I sometimes feel that I'm not allowed to talk about enjoying an attractively drawn comic book character. That that's objectifying women, and that women would never do the same. But my sisters certainly enjoy themselves some cheesecake, and it's nice to hear a fellow comic book geek say that she does as well. I admit, I've never really thought about Nightwing's butt, but now I can't stop thinking about it and frankly, I find the whole thing adorable. Dick is a good looking guy, so why shouldn't he be a sex symbol? It doesn't change how I feel about him. He's still a favorite character of mine.
Women does look at ass as much as men do ! i have very good ass and they look at my ass all the time lol
RogueTwo so you like the butt or you don’t?
Same. As long as the character is enjoyable who cares? I’ve see plenty of male fictional characters women go crazy for. Hell im seeing it left and right in the superhero genre and that’s fine. I don’t feel insulted or anything by it yet the world looses its mind when it’s a female character? When people engage with media they wanna see a character that is attractive generally speaking and this applys to both genders
The only way I would see it as objectifying is if that was your only reason for liking them but if you like their attractiveness as well as them then its fine
The issue falls on his it's weaved into the story kaleb.
Is this a birthday party cuz there's plenty of CAKE😳😳😳😳

Batgirl can see through his disguise via his butts only I'd say that's iconic enough. When was the last time any superhero identity got exposed by their butt?
I'd wager if Captain Underpants ever gets a SO the cat'll be outta the bag pretty quickly.
Harvey Bullock recognized Renee Montoya by her butt when she took up the Question mantle.
Some heroes need to wear masks. Dick needs to wear more loose fitting pants to hide his identity.
@@AesculapiusPiranha He needs to wear padding to protect that butt to be quite honest
I believe midnighter did too. Don’t remember if it was during his Grayson run or not.
It feels like Nightwing is the first male character to be widely sexualized like women in comics both due to the butt jokes and genuine interest. Like you said, rarely is he ever in a situation where he is actually powerless to stop any assault, and when he is it is glossed over because the creator doesn't want to portray him having any moments of weakness. This leads to situations like when he was raped, being groped, and catcalled with all of it being taken as a joke. Since of course the strong male character wont object, or at least wont care, about being used or seen sexually. So in a way if a creator wants to add sexual humor Nightwing is a safe option, since he is 'too strong and confident' to let things like that get in his way.
None of this stops me from loving some good Nightwing tush of course, but having Nightwing actually want to show off, go out of his way to shove his ass on screen, or jokingly accepting the attention his ass gets feels way better than when its him begrudgingly accepting attention he doesn't want.
I think that if sexualization were about a sexy character enjoying being sexy, there wouldn't be so troublesome as it is
I'm surprise the whole assault thing was not treated as assult, there is no other word to describe what Tarantula did other than rape.
Because society (mostly women) believe that guys can't be assaulted/harassed/oppressed/raped by girls and is thus dismissed (and even laughed at) in most cases since "men are bigger and stronger, women small and frail". Fucked up double standard.
@Molly H! I dunno know, I've seen ALOT of "feminists" talk as if men never get assuaulted, battered by their significant other or raped.
@Molly H! I can say I seen both females and males not take male sexual assault seriously and I heard the same things brought up from both sides.
It's why you never trust those bloody eight legged abominations other than Peter Parker, Gwen Stacy.... oh and Miles too, i'd say Ben but I'm sure he's still trapped in the 90s' never ending clone saga.
Since as far as I'm aware she hasn't posted a video on it, care to provide the context?
I do think Sasha raises an interesting point of when is cheescake allowed, or better said, appropriate, and as most things in life, it comes down to context. And Nightwing is one of the few male character's whose's sexuality is a noticeable part of him, which leads to the conversation about him as a sexual being, both as he presents himself and how he is perceived, to feel fitting.
The problem is that when we talk about female characters, their sexuality being prominent character blocks is almost a default at large, and worse, only aesthetically rather than narrative in most cases. It's hard to talk about the concept of agency when it comes to fictional characters, yet even agency as a pretext within the characterization is just sorely lacking on so many female characters that are objectified by the artwork that portrays them. No matter if you are a scientist, a hard ass, a shut in, a mother devoted to her children, you are most likely going to get drawn as a sex symbol, regardless of your character's context.
Nightwing feels special because he is an exception, when for female characters it's the norm, and it feels there has to be more of a balance when it comes to that so we can reach cheescake homeostasis.
And as a parting thought; Nightwing is just male Bayonetta.
Nightwing is one of my 3 favorite comic book characters of all time and as a straight male I gotta say the whole butt thing is great I fully support it.
Why does the Batfamily keep getting sexually assaulted?

Honestly the reason I got my attention caught by DC books was Nightwing's butt, and a friend telling me how much of a great bisexual disaster Constantine is, had mostly ever read Marvel, a lot of Spiderman stuff mostly - who also has a great butt, come on - but best friend was really into Batman and the Flash and I was seein a lot of Nightwing ass goin around so 'hecc Im into it, lets take a look.' Nah man she would understand its nightwing
My favorite nightwing moment was when he was showering and a freind walked in on him while showering. And he said "i almost lost two secret identitys." I forget what issue that was. Which you did put the shower picture in your video.
I feel like I remember something like that with one of his buddies but only ones with the shower I can think of are from 1984 teen titans( thought it was with Raven but after scanning first issues of 80's serieses I realized it was'nt Raven, it's on 12st issue of 1984 Titans series.)
Then I remembered there was one with Helena Bertielli in new Rebirth Nightwing run.
I feel like there are 2 more shower scenes I can't remember. What you're talking about sounds like it could be from 90's with Roy/Wally or simply Oracle. But I really can't remember. I'm gonna look for that though. I really feel like that happened in 90's too.
I rewatched the video and I realized you were talking about a panel shown in video. Saw that girl is Black Canary so I googled the panel. This is from 56th issue of Nightwing 1996 series. I can't believe that I totally forgot about this. I think I was more into Dinah teasing Babs rather than Dick.
some thing I haven't seen discussed about "THE BUTT" is that it all started when he ditched the cape and then you could see "THE BUTT" and thus a new era began... (they even made fun of it in many episodes of Teen Titans Go)
One thing no one can say about this video: "The cake is a lie"
the cake in comics is always a lie. think about it: it's ink on paper, you never actually get to taste it.
So you want to have cake and eat it too ... a man of culture I see
Shut up and take my like.....
Speaking of projection-Devin Grayson:
“Devin Kalile Grayson is my real and legal name. It's what's on my driver's license, passport, social security, etc. I've never written under a pseudonym. I was born with a different name, but had it legally changed in my early twenties - well before I was working in comics or even thinking about such - in response to sexual abuse issues in my childhood that made me feel like I needed to distance myself from my past a little bit psychologically.”
So she changed her name to “Grayson”, but it’s totally a coincidence and not a reference to Dick Grayson. And then by another coincidence wound up writing the comic starring the character, whom she wrote as a bisexual (like herself) and a rape victim (like herself). Just more coincidences.
Pretty clear evidence that she wrote herself into the character. In an odd way since he is a dude but she is bisexual. So does she have a fantasy about being a man dating women?
I literally screamed "Yes!" when I saw the video
Nigtwing + Powergirl = ultimate fanservice life-form
If this two couple up, the fanarts are gonna destroy us all
I gotta say something that I’ve only started to admit to myself.
Me being a questioning male (that’s the self admit part) who has unfortunately been sexually abused, I’m so grateful with how Dick is now being portrayed. Sure he’s a sex symbol for all people, but he’s also still vulnerable and willing to bounce back by always seeing the better in life. It took me a while to see the better in life after my experience and to see my favorite hero be able to, it gave me a lot of hope and optimism. It also made me feel that male victims have finally achieved another win with being recognized as true victims. Thank you writers and Dick Grayson
I'm a straight guy and I love that his butt has become part of his character. Cause everyone loves butts they bring us together, lol.
Great point about the feminism aspect how does objectifying really help? Sure exploring sexuality in comic characters is good. That panel you used for Dick stripping undercover definitely showed that left some emotional scars.
Not american comics but Berserk does a great job of exploring sexuality and truama. I personally believe one of the main characters, Griffith , to be gay and have love at first sight with with The main character, Guts(who is straight), and it drives the plot of the whole story. But creator just thinks they're bros.
I'm about to watch your Powergirl video cause I bet you make some great points in that. When I found out why she has her cleavage out like that it made her character for me. Still hard to decide whether its origin is as innocent as the characters motivation, but lets see what your video teaches me.
I believe that it's ok to draw Nightwing with a so called perfect backside if the artist chooses to. Depending on the type of person viewing the comic some will love it, some will hate it, and some will not even notice. The key in my opinion is what is said in the comic and what actions are being played out on the page.
Context matters. I would be super grossed out if he was drawn in high loving detail sexually while getting raped, for instance, but if he is flirting with some girl while both of them are rendered in high detail as hot then that's pretty expected and fine.
Women who don’t read comics: “Why do all the female characters have such over-exaggerated poses! You’d break your back if you did that in real life!”
Women who read comics: 4:55
Men also had alot of impossible poses on comics but not as sexually focused as women's are
@@homorockerbloguero5079 It depends on what people find to be sexual.
Well I mean Dick is an acrobat so he’s obviously gonna be more flexible than ur average dude
personally, i like nightwing as a hero bc (im not saying its ALL the time) hes agility and way of moving is how you would normally see the female characters fight. it's graceful but still really effective. another is his personality. he seems like the type of big brother that would tell you to stop doing stupid shit but then hed suddenly get curious and actually enable you into doing the stupid shit.
I'm a straight male and I love that Dick is like this. It is fun to see characters like him kind of revel in his attraction and be openly be attracted too.
I think Dick and how he's sexualized can be used to open the conversation about sexualizing comic characters (specifically female ones) to people (generally gate keeping men) who don't see how the excessiveness of that art is damaging to people's perception of people.
If the people who champion excessively over sexualizing female comic characters are made uncomfortable by the same treatment being given to male characters, then maybe we can open a dialogue about how to properly address it as an issue and find a middle ground.
Not sure if that made sense but yeah...
Since you've made a video about Nightwing's butt and the back and forth about that, could we get one on Jason Todd's thighs? Asking for a friend.

We all know his thighs save lives.
Ah, we finally talk about "dem cheeks", The Dick-Butt, everyone wants to clap that THICC cake, the Helen of Troy of the Booty Wars. I went all out on this sentence, but i'm not done ! This is the 41st cake Lex Luthor wanted to steal, but that would terrible, in summary, he looks like where's nothing at all, andhis full moniker is "Stupid Sexy Nightwing", now i'm done lol
(Tangent, I care WAY TOO MUCH about character ages and costumes, the Tardis is about the sixe of a city, since it can break the mantle of the Earth if it used it's actual weight)
I'm a male and I totally love what's being done with nightwing's butt. Every single bit of it. It's just being handled so perfect.
I haven't read any Nightwing comics so it's a little weird for me since I still mentally clock Dick Grayson as really young (and most associate him with Burt Ward if I'm being entirely honest) despite seeing him as the oldest Robin when I read things like Tom King's Batman.
But I can offer some male perspective on self body image. I workout hard and diet even harder with the express goal of making my body more attractive to women and this is a fairly normal motivation for males in the gym. Personal trainers will complain that most clients (the non-athletes that are still constantly in the gym) won't admit actual fitness goal is 'look good naked' until they've been working with them for weeks to months (and then they may need a program overhaul to reflect that).
Dick Grayson wouldn't have ever had to workout with this goal in mind as he was raised as a gymnast before he was raised by Batman to be a crime fighter. He always would have trained to be lean and athletic which would push him towards an above average physique naturally, even more so as the average physique in reality has fallen over the several decades Dick Grayson has existed as a character.
So Dick Grayson could work as a character that is proud of his ass which he no doubt has to be training off panel if they don't actually show his workouts. Or a character that has a near ideal physique incidentally and wishes it would garner less attention. You didn't really touch on his thoughts on it much.
And I'm glad I include targeted glute work in my leg days and will continue to do so.
I'd also note that, to me, this whole issue is complicated not just by Dick being a rape survivor, but also that for the past couple of decades he's been ethnically Romani in canon, and portrayals of Romani people so often make them into sexualized, exoticized fanservice that it ends up feeling pretty reactionary to make him yet another example of that trope. If you were going to choose a male character to strike this blow for fanservice equality, he's arguably a choice who comes with a lot of complicated baggage attached.
YES! A Nightwings butt video!! Casually Comics: Known for Butts, boobs etc 😂🤣
World renowned atp.
I think it’s interesting how Dick Grayson doesn’t really ever acknowledge his own appearance often while everyone inside and outside of comics is fascinated by it. He’s usually portrayed as oblivious to his own beauty with people commenting on it behind his back or him ignoring comments outright. This kinda goes both ways I think, not many female characters ever acknowledge their beauty either. So far, Nightwing has only ever acknowledged his ability to have had many relationships. Would it be weirder if he liked that people found him attractive or if it went the other way and he expressed annoyance over being objectified constantly? Overall it’s created an interesting culture where nobody can know that they’re pretty. Though, maybe since he’s in a world where everyone is pretty, he really doesn’t think he’s that different from everyone else?
"That aspect of his character was leaned into"... First chuckle of the day. It's going to be a good day.
The disco wing is my favorite costume. I love him being with Starfire. Idk why but I always think Babs is like highschool age, 16, while Dick is a 12.
I very much dislike Devin Grayson. She turned Dick in to a character who was constantly in meaningless relationships who before had been written as someone who couldn’t be in a relationship with someone he didn’t love. Not to mention the whole Tarantula thing **shudders**
That's only valid if you started reading the characters with New Teen Titans, to be honest. It was a retcon to push a narrative agenda. Before that, he could be interested in a girl from sight alone and want to go out with them just because they were good-looking.
The Tarantula thing was traumatizing...
Out of every relationship you mentioned, you had to remind me of *that* one.
Honestly, if you get bruce moral code, shit like that will happen to you.
Problem is treating it as fetish, it's character development, it's supposed to hurt in the reader.

@@lloydgush very true and agree I fell compelled to mention after Barbara got crippled Grayson went over to invite her to his wedding. He she was crying he decided to comfort her and then they slept together. The morning after Barbara was little more happy because she thought they was getting back together then he turn around and hand her the invite to his wedding. She kick him after that.
Dick being allowed to become Nightwing and leave the Robin role is a triumph of the licensing department. Still no mention of how cookies made Dick Grayson become Nightwing.
Also, no mention of page 28 of "Tales of the Teen Titans" #50 (the Wedding of Donna Troy), which is one of the earliest occurrences of people (women) mentioning Dick's "tush".
"Cheesecake" is officially my least favorite ass-related word. Ecch.
(great work, though, love the channel!)
It's funny because the evolution of that slang word never pertained to butts in the past. "Cheesecake" photography in WWII only meant a pretty pin-up girl, like Betty Grable and Rita Hayworth. These women showed more LEGS than anything else, to be honest. Similarly, the word for male physique photography was "Beefcake." Guy Madison and Steve Reeves would be examples of that. I have never heard a man's butt referred to as "cheesecake" before. And I don't know where this idea that "cheesecake" refers to butts came from. It seems to me to be a misunderstanding of the origins of this slang word. It actually just meant the women in the pin-ups were sweet like a dessert, and it was in fact, innocently intended. Especially by today's more sexually explicit standards.
Amanda Conner wrote that Harley Quinn has the biggest bootie among DC's ladies. It was just a throwaway joke but I accept it as canon.
I am pretty sure that Starfire knows that Nightwing has a good but.
"I'm a fan girl and a shipper"
Me: hello rotten sister, I am your rotten brother
Nightwing has the perfect booty. More perfect than Superman's, more perfect than Batman's. Hell, even more perfect than Wonder Woman's!
Ah yes, another comic anatomy lesson. I do enjoy these very much. And your questions are always spot on. I love all..er most Titan related characters and Nightwing is in top 3. I get the overall idea that people view Nightwing's butt in similar ways to Power Girl's breasts (no problem with either) but the cases with Tarantula and Mirage could never be written in the reverse. I feel at times his 'sex-symbol' status is pushed really far in a way that would cause a revolt if done to a female.
No Sasha, you've earned your cake privilege! Enjoy it as you will!
When you said "I've opened up the Pandora's box of Dick's butt," I've never laughed SO HARD in my life. I don't know if you appreciate how loaded that sentence was, but I love you for it. Jason Todd's thighs ✨
The uncomfortable question I'd ask after this is if Dick's sexualization is at all tied to the "Seduction of the Innocent" perspective where Robin was already, in a kind of disturbing to think about sort of sense, seen as sexualized by some as a youth?
This woman was simping for grayson.

This is the hard hitting questions being talked about that reminds me why I subbed for Nightwings booty and Power Girl chest ☺...
Having both sides giving the thumbs up...
Harley Quinn calls him "Nightbutt" in Gotham Knights.
Thank you for talking about this! Personally, I think objectifying Nightwing is a step in the wrong direction as far as feminists are concerned. It’s a double standard if we support it and honestly I could use some more average looking people in comics. The reason I even took an interest in Dick Grayson is because of the sticks called Robin in the early 2000s animated shows.
As a woman, I totally love all the attention Nightwing’s butt gets, but I also believe that if we are allowed to so openly objectify the male superheroes, we should be just as allowed to objectify the female superheroes without being bashed. Otherwise, you’re just being sexist.
“I was promised butt!” Hahaha
In my opinion, I don't think people mean Nightwing's ass is a COMPLETE "feminist" victory, as in...his butt solved sexism forever (although I'd LOVE to live in a world where it did). Instead, I think it's meant to be a small tactical victory. Cheesecake and sexualization are mostly fine in a vacuum, but as you said, not when there are different societal expectations and baggage. For those that want truly equal representation, the problem has always been that one gender tends to sexualized by default while the other was not. I don't think leaning too hard in either direction (nobody is ever sexualized ever or everybody is always sexualized all the time) is healthy for the creative industry, but being able to have a variety of characters fulfill these roles for a plethora of genders, sexualities, and so forth is a good thing. Nightwing has certainly gotten a lot of female creators more willing to explore sexual content in comics, and in turn he's also shown male creators the "right" way to make an attractive male character. So overall, yeah...I think it's a small victory.
Wow there was a level of analysis here I was NOT expecting
This is a really interesting video, it's nice to move beyond the surface level appreciation of a nice ass on a comic to the juicy stuff that inevitably comes with sexualising any character. Love it when the recipes are brought out, makes the whole meme into a curious (yet kind of funny) debate. Personally I don't mind the ass, but I think there needs to be a balance to it. I think there just needs to be that use of context when the ass in brought up in the story, like realistically would Dick react well to potential enemies observing his ass while he tries to beat theirs? Probably not; at least that's what I like to think. I just think the second you make it into a core characteristic that's where you lose me (Grayson I'm looking at you). Maybe that's because I prefer a Dick Grayson that's colder and more serious, so bringing up his ass repeatedly kind of ruins that for me (even though I do very much appreciate said ass in existing art, bless). Also bringing it up in story too many times breaks the realism (listen,, don't laugh I'm trying to make a point allow it) of the character interactions for me, it just screams the fantasy of the writer which breaks my suspension of disbelief. Ehh I'm taking this a little too serious but it's a fun topic for me so we move! Also I'm curious, would we ever get a video on your favourite ships or friendships in comics? From one fangirl to another I'm mad curious smH.
"Opened up the Pandora's box of Dick's butt" 🙄 and gone where no one has gone before? A well deserved thumbs up for this channel. 👍😮
As far as the Nightwing ogling/objectification being a "win for feminism", I'd always assumed it was in regards to not just women being objectified/drawn in a more sexual or provocative nature. I'm a believer in equal opportunity cheesecake - hot gals and hot guys \o/
I do agree that it depends on how it's employed. I do think an arc showing that a guy being uncomfortable with ogling/objectification too could be important. A meaningful aspect of comics is helping people see different perspectives on the world.
[also someone mentioned ogling butt and also being outraged at Power Girl's boob window - I am 100% pro boob window]
Oh man, I'm gonna go Too Deep here too. I remember, with regards Grayson-the-Spy-Comic, that what bothered me wasn't the emphasis on sexuality per se (though I thought it was overdone), but that so often it was done in the context of people treating Dick in ways that were clearly portrayed as making him uncomfortable, including outright groping him without his consent and violating his privacy at times. I think it makes a world of difference when the character is portrayed as being in control and enjoying what's happening, as opposed to being harassed or violated. Why would I enjoy watching a character I love and care about be treated that way, especially when, as this video discusses, he's a rape survivor twice over in canon?
I have no issue with scenes where characters lightheartedly flirt with Dick or comment on his looks, and he lightheartedly flirts back or just casually brushes it off. (There's also a difference between a character being flustered and a character seeming genuinely uncomfortable or threatened, I think, though I recognize it’s a subjective line.) Watching him be treated like a piece of meat is something else, and I do think Devin Grayson is responsible for introducing a lot of those consent issues, though of course earlier runs weren’t flawless. I almost get the feeling that some of these creators thought it was striking a blow for equality to have him objectified in the same nonconsensual way female characters so often are, but that’s not the kind of “equality” I’m looking for. If there’s going to be a bit of fanservice, I’d rather it be in a context where the character feels like they have agency and aren’t having their consent violated.
I love the idea of Dick being portrayed as Bisexual especially considering the history of gay panic with batman and robin.
Yeah in a way it sorta makes sense which honestly I don't mind😏💙
Honestly yeah, if there's a comic book character who definetly screams bi is Nightwing
Definitely.
I am a little torn. Because on one hand, Nightwing is somewhat framed as the default golden boy. He will be obedient, sincere, hot, and skilled. He is kind of meant to be the most basic and unconventional archetype. So being straight kind of makes sense. Plus, making someone bi after being established as a sex symbol could have negative connotations that LGBTQ people are promiscuous or at least more easily associated with the word "sex". He's hot and names his buttcheeks? Oh, he's definitely gay. On the other hand, it would be really really funny if he was bi since there would be so much sweet sweet poetic justice.
Nightwing never striked me as a bi.
I just heard about this and I was like " There's no way there's a RUclips video about this". I'm sorry I doubted this beautiful platform
Thank you for this public service. Nightwing has always been my favorite character. I don’t mind the objectification of him. It just means other people are appreciating him.
This is the video that got me back into DC. It'd been 20 years since I'd considered myself a fan, but now I'm back at it.
I just discovered this channel and I saw... this. I umm. I think I'm going to like it here.
I like his butt. Not just because it looks good objectively, but because it shows what kind of work he does in comparison to the other bat-gang. He has a background as an acrobat/gymnast adjacent performer and it shows. He isn’t big and beefy. He’s leaner, more toned and slim. If you have done gymnastics or know someone who has, you know that it requires more leg and core power. He keeps that background of his in his physique, his fighting style and how he works out. THAT is why I like Nightwing/Richard ‘Dick (Thicc)’ Greyson and his amazingly beautiful posterior.
It’s so heartening to watch the social science and geek cultures collaborate in this new era, whether it’s about Nightwing being a sex symbol or literally ANYTHING in the superhero world. I love that you’re bringing an almost NPR level of professionalism and friendliness to talks that are often dead from edgy posturing before they even begin. I look forward to film and tv Nightwing catching up with how progressive and experimental comics are, even when it’s “just” fun cake.
Mostly? Just keep sexualizing characters in a healthy way because sex is healthy.
Some things that I can add. I think it helps that Nightwing's history is as an acrobat and he's a sculpted prettyboy that wears (as opposed to most heroes like Batman and Superman who have always had what looks like built-in shorts) a skintight, almost painted-on looking costume... thanks to that, even if the artists don't intend it, it leads to many images of him flipping around and stretching in all kinds of angles, showing off all his angles. This leads to the kind of "sexy shot" for male characters that aren't the stereotypical "powerful muscular hunk" kind that usually men think fits the bill... instead we got the kind of shots usually used for female sexy characters applied to a man. It may be more intentional now, but I think it started because everyone picked up on something that probably wasn't intentional at first. Even long before I saw the trend of people pointing out his ass, the first time I heard of Nightwing and how cool people thought the character was, it wasn't long before I saw comments about him being a heartthrob for female readers. I always thought he had a bit of that rep, so if any male comic book hero's butt got noticed, I'm not surprised it was his.
And I don't think society as a whole has decided yet on how to deal with the unbalance and double standard when it comes to female characters being shown more sexually than male characters - stop doing it entirely or don't stop and also do it for male characters more and balance things out. I've always preferred the latter, so yeah, as a straight as hell make, I welcome Nightwing's booty to the DC universe. Society, whither their morals are driven by religion or not, hasn't come to terms with the idea that sexuality and sex and the body are normal and natural and not bad, dirty, evil, "sinful" things, and are probably healthier to go to for fun and entertainment than violence as we usually go to. Cake for everyone. But that said, we need balance too. We don't need to stop with female sexy characters but we could use more new ones (rather than trying to change established ones) who don't have their sexuality as one of their main traits.
I agree with most of that. I generally welcome more sexualisation than less. I also think people say male characters are just as sexualised as female characters, when they often aren't. Them being shirtless, is not the same as how scantily clad women often are and how the camera focuses on their body parts. There's constant butt shots with female characters, but very few with men. Female characters are often introduced with their asses in full frame. I also think, even with Nightwing, they shy away from showing his bulge. With a skin tight suit, it should be shown more.
I've read the Top Cow Tomb Raider comics recently, and Lara and all the female characters were heavily sexualised, which is fine. But I felt the male ones should have been a bit more so too. There's lots of female fans of that series, so they should have been given some eye candy too. Nearly every panel focused on Lara's boobs, ass or thighs, but I'd say only in one panel, was one of the male characters sexualised, and even then, not as much as Lara. I think there should have been at least one shot of Kurtis revealing his bare ass, and probably some others of male characters wearing g'strings, where their bulges show.
I think it really just depends on the character. With Nightwing and Harley Quinn, they have that charm that comes with them. I think with Wonder Woman it’s weird cause she’s not the flirty, charming your boots off type
Apparently, Ted Kord is also of the phenomenal buns club, at least according to Ice and early League issues
I'm sitting here in my Nightwing hoodie.
Let me tell you I am happy I got this notification
The entire 'Grayson' series was pure, unadulterated gay-baiting... And I was 100% on board with that.
Personally I love my cheesecake as well. I think it all comes down to an image issue. as long as people think of comics being written primarily by straight men, for straight men to a lot of people nightwing will always feel like a unicorn. the more times people who don't fit that mold get comic runs, or make channels like yours, or something else increasing their vizablity the more I believe you'll see the perception change.
He's far from an unicorn.
@@lloydgush I know, but my point was that can be hard to see from the outside. I was talking about outside perceptions of the comic community and why I think it happens
@@solacessewingcorner1396 But I don't get why "written by straight men for straight men" would make anyone think this way.
I'm a bisexual man that loves cake of all kind, and I do find it a bit hypocritical and slightly uncomfortable that sexualised a female character is viewed as always objectifying, yet the opposite is not true for male characters.
Thanks for talking about this!
Bruce Wayne 🤝 Dick Grayson: Having prominent butts
As for the cheesecake debate: Portion control is helpful, having adult characters show off their butts or busts shouldn't be a problem as long as it's not overdone to the point of being annoying/distracting (ex: confident poseing vs literally dying).
'My Barbra Gordon don't,
My Barbra Gordon don't,
My Barbra Gordon don't want none unless you got buns Hon.'
I became aware of it during Grayson and Batgirl. The girls at the school who named each cheek. Huh.
It's probably a dour topic but I'm interested in the conversation around that kind of assault in comics. Positive examples vs poor examples. Not sure a single condensed episode covering multiple instances of terribleness would be easy to put together tho.
I love how RUclips knew this is the content I’m interested in lmao
My husband walked in on me watching this video at 2:57 wearing a blue jacket, blue collared shirt and blue pants - and now I cannot unsee it.
Hmmm, well, the thing is I haven't read a lot of comics, I just read like 5 or 6( I am still in the middle of reading Nightwing. Nowhere near finishing it), however, from what I've seen in the Hawkeye Initiave is that a lot of women who were in it were shaped in such a weird way so that their butts or boobs were the main highlight in the cover. It didn't feel like there was a subtlety there that you would see in one of Nightwing's comics.
