Understanding the Monkey Mind with Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche

  • Monkey mind loves to create problems for us. In this video, Mingyur Rinpoche clarifies that what monkey mind is doing is not terribly important. Instead, what is important is how you relate to monkey mind. This teaching is from the Joy of Living Level 1 Online Program bit.ly/3s9gXK9
In brief, if you are able to avoid empowering the monkey mind as the “boss” on one hand and trying to dominate it on the other, the qualities of the mind-such as pliability and flexibility-will naturally emerge, and the monkey will rest.Subtitles are offered in multiple languages.

I read something somewhere a while ago and it really stuck with me. Maybe some people here will have a use for it:
''You are focusing hard and trying to banish the thoughts, and they are not going away. This is the nature of the mind, but it looks like you are very prejudiced against your mind. When you are doing your meditation, you don’t mind if your kidneys or your lungs are functioning or if your heart is beating. You don’t mind all the other processes in the body - only your brain should not function! The notion that if you do something spiritual, your brain should stop working is simply wrong. Do not be concerned about your thoughts. Above all, do not try to stop them. Let them happen like the activity of your kidneys is happening. Do not bother about your thoughts or about how to control your thoughts. Depending upon what is there inside today, thoughts will flow. There is no significance or consequence to this. You just need to do the meditation - do not do the thoughts. The kidneys will do their own thing; the liver will do its own thing; the brain will do its own thing; you do the meditation - that is all.''

The locals there pray to 'BHIKHAINI' Baba (Beggar Baba). Bhikhaini was mispronounced by Buddhists as Bhikshu. Who is BHIKHAINI Baba. The Buddha no doubt. But people are searching for a man called Buddha. In the real Vaishali, in Beluha the Buddha suffered a sickness and felt he had grown old. The locals pray to 'BURHA' Baba (Old Baba). Who is BURHA Baba. The Buddha no doubt. In the real Vaishali the Lichavies pressurized Buddha not to die. They trailed him to Bandagawan pressurizing him not to die. To put pressure in Hindi is DABESHWAR. Three dozen villages around the stupa where Buddha gave the Lichavies his patra, the villagers pray to Baba 'DABESHWAR NATH' meaning the man who won the pressurizing game. Once you realize your thoughts are not smart at all, that they are in fact quite stupid and of no use to the weal of the world, then they will stop bothering you. Like you are sitting in a house and you are watching out the window, then you see a cow pass by, then you see a horse, but you just sit there drinking your tea. It’s attention that gives power to your thoughts. Your thoughts are stupid, let go of your stupid thoughts.

How I perceive "monkey mind" is the relationship you have with the things you perceive as insecurities about yourself. The more you let them control your thoughts subconsciously, the more you give them room to disrupt your way of living. The more you acknowledge them, work on them if possible or accept them if not, the calmer your mind will be, allowing you to reach a higher level of perception.

Important concept to bring forward in conversation. I learned the 3 Elements of Monkey Mind are: (1) limitless greed - nothing is ever enough, especially if something brings pleasure (relevant to a world dominated by materialism/consumerism/exploitation); (2) tireless fear - people live in constant fear even in the absence of threat (the genesis of ego is caused by fear), especially fearful of new or novel stimulus/information/arisings; (3) constant seeking of highest position - Monkey Mind reacts to threats by assuming highest position (this is to protect the ego/status/self-identity) and in absence of threat Monkey Mind schemes to gain advantage/status/control over other beings.
But to our great fortune Monkey Mind is subject to impermanence, and requires practice to achieve rewarding success. If the practitioner knows how to overcome ego identity by generating a clearing in the mind space, then Monkey Mind simply atrophies and the result is a good Human Being able to benefit and serve others. The Path to Liberation begins with dispelling of Monkey Mind. And since we are all seeking Liberation from the Cyclic Existence of Samsara, dispelling Monkey Mind is an imperative first step. Namaste 🙏🏼

I am so happy now I know of your teachings. I have been looking for meditation videos for years. There are many techniques to help meditate and even more books were written on the art of meditation. But none of what I have managed to see so far resonated with me - with my understanding (even though very limited) of what meditation actually is. Because the interesting thing is, that even though I was not educated in the art of meditation, I somehow had a feel for what it should be. From the first words, from seeing your way of connecting with others I immediately recognized that I have arrived to a place where now I can also join this plane of existence that meditation brings. As my voyage before wasn’t successful, I ended up creating my own videos based on the feeling I had on what I have expected to feel and get from meditation. Your lessons bring me closer to my expectation of meditation. Thank you for being a guiding light on the path we often call Life.

Aside from "give the monkeymind employment", the rest is good ( for me ) to manage past-negative repeating thoughts. I don't fight thoughts or try to police them anymore.
