    The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

    My husband Dick Dale is the pioneer and creator of his own sound in 1954. Dick Dale and Leo Fender, Freddy Tavares are the pioneers of Fender equipment in the 1950s. Leo Fender was like a second father to my husband DD as when they met in the 1950s they collaborated on Loud Sound and much of the Fender Equipment such as Amps, Speakers, Transformers as well as Guitars, Strat Guitar, and more. DD was placed in Life Magazine in 1963 and when Ed Sullivan saw the 17 photo centerfold in Life Magazine he immediately called Dick Dale to request him to be on his TV show in 1963. Ed Sullivan Loved Dick Dale and of course Dick Dale thought the world of Ed Sullivan. Rock History at its Best!

      I wanted to add that my husband began his career in 1954 once moving to LA from Quincy, Ma. Born in Boston, Ma. with his MOM and DAD and sister Shirley. His Father was brought to LA Hollywood, Ca. by Howard Hughes himself requesting Dick's Father who was an Engineer to work for Hughes Aircraft. DD and his dad as well as mother and sister Shirley all worked for Hughes Aircraft in the beginning. My husband was a Metallurgist.

    Dick Dale is one of the legends of the surf guitar rock scene. The other songs he is playing after his singing introduction are "Misirlou" and (I think) "The Wedge". This episode also featured top hitmakers the Angels singing "My Boyfriend's Back" (also posted), Kate Smith with a WWII song medley, the Three Stooges and Sonny Liston.

    He has a Middle Eastern heritage and his music reflects that. Plays a right- handed guitar left- handed. This makes it sound different from a regular guitar. He also inspired Leo Fender to make his amps more powerful, louder and beefier as he used considerable volume and would often fry them. Leo was fronting him equipment as a test venture. A really brilliant guy for sure.

    One thing I just thought of, Dick Dale was left handed. Why was that never talked about, or why was he not popular for that? When people first saw Paul McCartney play, being left handed was the first thing people noticed about him. Were the Beatles so popular that Dick Dale was just overlooked?

    • @RobyLaPorte

    I saw Dick Dale at the Cat Club in NYC during his revival. He was great. By that time his guitar sound had become more ratty and fuzztone-ish. It was a great sound. A lot more aggressive than the early 60's sound but still totally surfy.

      @dclipper8052 Месяц назад

      I think it was always like that in live shows--even back then. All the gear he was using when you saw him was the same gear he was playing on in the 60s. I think the difference is that those earlier recordings didn't manage to capture an accurate representation of his sound. He actually complained about that in later years.

      The guitar sound in the familiar studio version of Misirlou is heavily doctored. Jan Davis took a recording given to him by Dick's dad and reworked it extensively, including running the otherwise dry guitar through a spring reverb, I think. He clearly added a ton of thickness to it as well. None of Dick's other recordings of Misirlou come close to that same thickness.
