H/H match update and End-of-Week Recap: ... ~~~Today's Action: Not many matches in today's full game. Still, a one-to-zero score is enough to crown a new champion. The departing champion had won a single game and $200. *Today's audience match question: "I am________"* (My thoughts: What I Am, ???, ???) - Can't wait to see some good answers, since I'm not thinking of any. The celebs: Richard (Woman), Charles (an American), Brett (a Camera*) *A Broadway play and later a movie The choice: Woman (Good choice - I'd forgotten that 1972 Helen Reddy song, but it's bound to be up there.) The answers: Hungry, The Greatest, Woman (I guess the Popeye saying is technically "I yam what I yam.") Once again a new champion, but will we see a new celeb chosen for the H/H this time? I doubt it. Richard's recent sub-par performance doesn't discourage our new champion from choosing him for a chance to win $5,000. This is now King Richard's fourteenth consecutive time answering the head-to-head question. He's matched five of those times so far. Stats: Richard has matched 92 of his 219 most recent attempts (42.0%), 75 of his last 176 attempts (42.6%), 31 of his last 79 attempts (39.2%), and 12 of his last 36 attempts (33.3%). His overall success rate is *41.7%* and this is his 697th attempt so far. For the sake of comparison: Fannie has matched 14 of her 29 attempts (48.3%), Charles has matched 33 of his 69 attempts (47.8%), Brett has matched 30 of her 70 attempts (42.9%), and Richard has matched 290 of his 696 attempts (41.7%). Dick Smothers and Minnie Pearl haven't answered any H/H questions yet. *Today's H/H question: "Foster________"* (My first thought was Foster Grant. Second is foster parent.) Richard begins writing quickly as is his wont, but he pauses to look over at Fannie and then looks back at his card with a critical/dubious expression, shaking his head. He appears to write something else before sliding his card into the slot. The new champion appears torn. She alludes to following her first choice and says "Mother," eliciting a chorus of boos from the audience (cold). The camera cuts to a stone-faced Richard, still holding his fingers crossed. Gene queries the audience, and I heard a lot of different answers, including mine ("Grant"), but Gene doesn't repeat any of them. Well, now all eyes turn to Mr. Dawson (who is nattily dressed today)... No, Richard mentions Foster Brooks but went with my second thought (although in the plural): "Parents" No H/H match today. ~~~The Week that Was: A double dose of H/H on "Thursday" gave us six question once again on this second consecutive all-Richard H/H week. But we only got a single H/H match all week: Richard 1/6 (It's a shame because we have three panelists with better track records than Richard, and none of them was called on all week.) Recapping this week's panelists: *Richard* had a dismal week, his overall average slipping from 41.8% to 41.6%. *Brett* was idle again this week, sitting pretty at 42.9%. *Charles* was idle for his fifth week, his accuracy score holding steady at a very nice 47.8%. *Fannie* Flagg finished her 65th week of 90. No H/H action for her this time, so her track record holds steady at a terrific 48.3%, the best on this week's panel. *Dick* Smothers completed his second and final week on the panel, never getting a shot at a head-to-head question. *Minnie* Pearl completed her first and last week as a Match Game panelist, also without answering a head-to-head question. (I thought Minnie was a delight and a good player. It's a shame she never returned.) ~~~Looking ahead, these are the faces we'll see joining our three stalwart regulars next week: -----Semi-regular Joyce Bulifant will return for her 30th week of 38 (you can tell we're gradually approaching the end of the show's run). Joyce is situated near the top of the leader board, with her three wins in four attempts (75%). I'd love to see her stats get fleshed out a little more. -----Mary Wickes will return for her 9th week (of 14 total). Mary last appeared in episodes 996-1000, and she hasn't played a head-to-head question yet. Maybe next week? -----Last but not least, Gary Crosby will become the latest of a growing number of one-week-only Match Game panelists. ~~~Finally, here's our updated leader board showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy: (Note: An asterisk before a celebrity's name signifies that she has "retired" from the show and her H/H stats are now complete.) (Note: For tied scores, I consider the one with the greater number of matches to be higher; if the matches are equal, the celeb who first achieved that score goes on top.) Orson Bean - 100% (4 wins in 4 attempts). TIE: (*)Jo Anne Worley - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). TIE: Joyce Bulifant - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). Gary Burghoff - 71.4% (5 wins in 7 attempts). Betty - 50.0% (19 wins in 38 attempts). Fannie - 48.3% (14 wins in 29 attempts). Charles - 47.8% (33 wins in 69 attempts). Jo Ann Pflug - 44.4% (8 wins in 18 attempts). Brett - 42.9% (30 wins in 70 attempts). Richard - 41.6% (290 wins in 697 attempts). Bert Convy - 33.3% (5 wins in 15 attempts). *These stats include every head-to-head match from episode 1 through 1050, excluding the missing/damaged/unavailable episodes: 31, 32, 33, 311, 312, 313, 324, 325, 645, 910, 1024, 1025, 1026, 1027, 1028, 1029, and 1030. *Also, note that episode 849 was never produced. (These stats do, however, include the H/H results of missing episode 968 as those results were revealed in episode 969. Note: There was no H/H in missing episode 1035, as we learn in 1036.)
"I am the greatest" - Gene, Gene, Gene. Sure it was Jackie Gleason's phrase - 20 or 30 years before this aired. But Muhammad Ali was saying it in the days when the show was being taped and aired. Good gravy Marie! (to steal from Brett)
John Stewart - you are correct in every sense about Fannie except about her misspelling words on purpose. She is dyslexic - so her misspelling was not a joke - it was for real. Makes her prolific writing skills even more profound, yes?
Here are the results from this week: Richard gave away the most money again at a total of $6,500. Brett gave away $750 and Fannie gave away $100 in an audience match. Richard also matched the most at a total of 13 matches. Fannie came in second matching 11 times, Brett matched 8 times, Charles matched 7 times, Dick matched 6 times, and Minnie matched 5 times.
I dont understand the end with "eats dates on a calendar" How is that a good answer, someone please explain. I'm probably overthinking it as I usually do lol.
I don't know if you read this but here it is I think. I didn't get it either until I thought about it. In this case I think it was a play on the word date where in this case referring to the fruit date. Did that make sense.. ;0)

Fannie Flagg (real name Patricia Neal) was/is a very attractive, intelligent woman. Among her achievements, she is the author of "Fried Green Tomatoes" - the book, and the movie. I don't like it when she plays dumb, or deliberately mis-spells words. If anyone gets a chance, see any or all of her interviews, you'll be pleasantly surprised at how articulate she really is, and how she can "think on her feet" i.e. think fast.
Just wonder with all the spit that was exchanged during all the seasons of March Game who caught what from who?🤔I loved the show but still think Gene was a huge perv!😂 💋
I thought Boo-Boo was a shoo-in for the Yogi Bear question.
Right? That or "My Pic-i-nic basket"
I am OZ! It may not be a winner, but it was the first to pop into my head.
No one said "Boo-Boo"?
They clearly didn't partake in cartoons.
That was my first thought.

Spartacus!
I’d love to have the Match Game theme song as my ringtone!
Really? You can probably find a way to record it and upload to your phone.
Richard seems very tired 😴 today. Fannie seemed embarrassed poor thing

Ever wonder what Dick Smothers does when he has to fill out one of those forms where you have to put your last name first.....
Paul D'Pa hahahahahahaha😳😁🤣

Yes she does Charles

Fannie was dyslexic
I have a feeling she mispelled words to be funny. She could've asked Richard to help her any time,

@kristabrewer6736 I love that Richard lives rent free in your tiny little mind 50 years after the fact.
