  • Since his debut album Flight entranced listeners in 2018, pianist-keyboardist-producer James Francies has expanded personal explorations of sound bending and orchestral approaches to the music. Collaborations across stylistic realms - including those with Childish Gambino, Pat Metheny, Mark Ronson, The Roots, YEBBA, Chris Potter, Common, Eric Harland, Marcus Miller, DJ Dahi and Ms. Lauryn Hill - have enhanced his development and refined his sound. In issuing Purest Form, his second Blue Note release, Francies accesses intimate chambers of his artistry across 14 tracks, interpreting love, grief, frailty, and fortitude.

I saw James with Pat Metheny a few years ago, totally blew me away. No need for a bass player and he would change from left hand/left keyboard to right hand/right keyboard for the bass parts seamlessly. After the show I saw him cut out the back stage door and jog 3 blocks to the hotel. I caught up with him told him he was insane and wired differently, he smiled so he got what I met and said 'for sure'. Same applied to Pat and the drummer that night, might have been the same guy as in this video.

Love his playing have seen him twice now since 2018: 2019 in Washington DC w/Chris Potter Circuits tour, Nate Smith I think on drums; and then 1 1/2 mos. ago in Durham NC w/Pat Metheny and Joe Dyson, drums, from N Orleans. Just amazing amazing trio. He has just his OWN SOUND. PERIOD. Like Art Tatum way back in the day had his OWN SOUND, PERIOD although yes concentrating on piano, and a different era, but the complete ease and mastery of the instrument (and for JF, instruments plural!) is so similar to my ears.

oMG this level!!! The only comment would be about the recording and the piano sounding upright /detuned. But what a performance!!! Congratulations

James played more keys than the other guy demonstrating the Korg NAUTILUS in the other video in just the first few seconds! Kidding aside, my mind is blown! This is how to feature your instruments Korg! Although...not really showcasing what the keyboard can do, still an awesome video.
