In days before broadband internet, people theorised we would eventually have "digital gravestones" or something like virtual reality monuments for ourselves. As children in the 90s, we did not think about it much. now, 30 years later, we have an appalling record of neglect of our cultural heritage, and many have already gone silent, leaving chatlogs that will never be answered, and profile pages that will never be updated again.

I have guild mates on WoW last online 12 years ago. Their character sitting dormant. Each insignificant be item in their inventory a memento of a good memory. A time they spent in a virtual world with friends. Now all that’s left is name on a list, greyed out, likely never to say “online” again. Generations will come and go and the internet will continue to fill with names, profiles and avatars of people that are no longer with us. Eventually they’ll outnumber us. It’s equally as beautiful as it is depressing.
