Hiking Alone In Death Valley (Looking for Abandoned Mines)

- The property here at Cerro Gordo is about 400 acres and borders Death Valley. This week I decided to show you some more of the surrounding area by hiking out from the town to some remote abandoned mines that overlook Death Valley. I haven't been hiking in quite a while, so I over-packed, made some omissions in my packing, and had to make some tough decisions and realizations.

I was once like you when I was young I loved to roam the Colorado mountains. Now I am 89 and can enjoy your antics. Keep on keeping on.
Happy 90th sir.
I live vicariously through his videos...I require a walker to get around anymore. So my mountain hiking days passed by long ago...
I plan to move to Colorado with my husband hopefully within the next two years and that is one of the major reasons why. I absolutely love hiking and nature but especially in the mountains! I got a small taste of it hiking in the southern California mountains, we left California a year ago and going up to the mountains is what I miss most.
Let's all take a moment to appreciate the guy that sent Brent the "buy a ghost town" article.
It was you, wasn't it?
He deserves a plaque in the Hotel.
Without that stone being thrown into the pond none of this would have existed. The ripple effect is magnificent!!
"My one Pet peeve is littering" *Proceeds to become excited when finding 100 year old litter.*
Lol!
Ya but that 100 year old litter becomes valuable 100 years later when it becomes Antiques.
I was going to say the same thing but this was the first comment lol
At that point, it's not trash anymore. It's an artifact lol
Because trash used to be rare. We live in a disposable society. Everyone throws things away all the time. Back then people didn't throw out things that still worked. Trash has a whole different definition. A lot of these items were soiled or lost. And are now collectible because they were rare (creating low supply).
Also we used to have trash and rubbish. Rubbish was usually burned. Only trash was thrown away. Now we throw it all away.
Brent: "I'm going to play it safe"

"This looks like a collapse, I'm just gonna go a little bit farther"

I know right? Lol btw nice pic lol
He needs to get Ron howard to narrate his channel
The only guy who can make 45 minute videos and I’ll still watch every second of it!! Great videos love to watch them
I'm like that with Bald And Bankrupt or MichaelCtulhu - I could watch for 2 hours and it'd still seem like 10 minutes.
Same. Not many RUclips videos this length I'll sit through. Can't not watch these!
@ballisticrholo nah, I'll just enjoy the videos for what they are, everyone has a past and I can be arsed to research every RUclipsr I watch. Ain't like I'm dating them or employing them.
I can't stand Harold Baldr is that's one of the ones you mean, comes across as a right creep, I don't watch any with him in, nor could I watch ones with that whinging Welsh bloke in.
Thank you! I really appreciate that. I keep trying to make them better. Hopefully they continue to be entertaining
@@GhostTownLiving don't stress it.. you have only 42 dislikes out of the 85k who've watched it so far... I'm confident everyone likes the vids, including me!
One of the things that has kept me interested in this channel is Brent's evident appreciation for history. The way you cherish Cerro Gordo is very much transmitted on these videos. I hope to visit someday, even though I'm a foreigner.
Same here, love to visit!
Its sure that the miners spirits possessed him
Brent's contagious enthusiasm is what hooked me. He's a born storyteller. He draws you in totally.
Hey Brent. I was an underground miner in NW for a couple years. There was over 250 miles of tunnel when I started there. I did everything from drilling to driving 55 ton haul trucks. It was like working the night shift, always about 55 degrees. I found some cool rocks. I would love to explore with you someday, I love exploring old mines. I have enjoyed watching the channel grow, keep up the good work!

The sunset chat towards the end of the video was by far the best part. Sure, the mines and what not have that immediate, visceral appeal... but the real quality is when you discuss what life lessons that brought you to that specific moment. Thanks for that! And the setting was perfect, you couldn't have had a better visual framing for that speech.

I’ve been thinking about why I love your videos so much and why I watch and rewatch your videos and it’s not just the history and the beauty of the landscape but it’s because of you Brent. These videos have the feel of a diary with great wisdom thrown in. Watching the joy and heartbreak that you continue to go through because you’ve fallen in love is incredible
it is exactly...it's like we're THERE with him.
This will probably get buried in the thousands of comments but I wanted to say thank you for your talk at the end of this video. I've been pretty down about making a career move late in my thirties and have almost regretted it here lately. There is a lot of back story that I'm sure you don't care about, but I wanted to just say that I have enjoyed watching every video that you have put out and I look forward to more of your future content. Hearing your story gives me the inspiration to keep my head up and believe in the choices that I've made to this point. Thanks again and be safe out there!
You only live once if you aren't happy in your life change it
Don't buy a deserted mining town for 1.4 millin dollars. Do something that brings you immense joy without feeling you owe anyone anything! That be RUclips viewers, investors, yourself, or anyone.
@Jeff Kestie : Stick with it Jeff. Im over 50 and have had to make several career moves, and some were forced (contract ended with no prospects, etc). Be ready to learn, and be eager to work. Even at 50, employers have liked that. You can do it. Believe in yourself. I will be praying for you.
I'm currently just about to turn 40. I'm waiting to finish a settlement. Making big changes can be difficult but life is too short to be miserable or sad. I almost died and after I get my money I'm going to try and change my life and do what I want. Be happy be safe and live your life how you want to. Keep your head up.

This is my first coment on youtube in my life. Usually i stay away from discussion on internet. But after this beautiful video from wild nature and your confession about you, i just want to say. Hey, maybe you are living in a ghoust town, but you aren't alone. Aside from the stunning visuals and interesting ghost town content, my favorite part of Brent's videos are the sincere, one-on-one moments about life and purpose. You inspire us my friend, keep on keeping on!
Brent, I realize that this is a video from December of last year but I still have to add my two cents. First, had you taken that corrugated sheet metal and made two walls held in place with the rocks and THEN built your fire (or even two firepits) on either side of the fire, the metal would have heated up to some extent.
Also, first thing you learn in camping; you don't unroll your sleeping bag until you are ready to go into it so that the creepy crawlies won't have a chance to get in there before you do. There is always the chance they will come in as you sleep, but that can always happen...
Also, if you use a bedsheet inside your sleeping bag you will not only be much warmer but much more comfortable as nylon is not the most comfortable material next to the skin.
Finally, you should have built your night bivvy in the first stone structure that you came across; it still had remains of walls which would have served as a windbreak and would have supported a roof made of the corrugated sheet metal...
Random thought the desert seems like a perfect place to stargaze have you ever considered buying a telescope? Hiking up a mountain and setting up a telescope would be cool.

Times have changed. Back then, there were barely a billion people in the whole world. Now, we are approaching 8 billion and it's only climbing exponentially from here on out.
Resources are diminishing, the climate is changing, polar ice caps are melting in front of our eyes, and we need to do everything we can to preserve the delicate ecology that human sustainability is hinging on. This starts with ending pollution and that means to put your trash where belongs so that it doesn't injure wildlife who might accidentally eat it, to prevent pollution of our dwindling fresh water sources, and reduce soil erosion and acidification.

Get a metal detector, the old miners would hide their valuables behind loose rocks in their walls.
But then carry it half way and leave it in a mine shaft with all your other stuff haha
It always seemed like common sense to me that most people would hide their valuables inside buildings. Do it outside somewhere and you'd run the risk of someone seeing you hide or retrieve it whereas inside you could take your time away from prying eyes. I think some of those locator beacons like the one he has have a feature where you can just send out a location ping sort of thing to specified contacts just to update them on where you are. I think it would be really good if he made it procedure to send one of those out at the entrance of each mine before entering so if something does happen someone will know the last mine he went into so that they know where to look. Maybe even leave a note at the entrance saying if he is inside and then update or take it down after leaving so that in the event he ever did get trapped in a mine people would know 100% he is in that mine and can focus search efforts and rescue there.

A lot of wild animals use those mines for shelter too, wild animals which can get very dangerous when cornered down a dark mine...
If he keeps on doing this he won't live old... It would be so sad... He doesn't seem quite conscious of the huge risks he takes.
I fucking love Brent, he's like the older brother that I've never had that decided to take a different path in life and never looked back.
You go Brent, much love all the way from Lisbon
This is netflix material. My new favorite channel!
Hi Brent, just wanted to say thank you for posting your videos about your life and adventures in Cerro Gordo. Ever since I found your channel, I am obsessed with watching your adventures. I absolutely love ghost towns, so I am hooked on watching your videos and following your explorations. It's so cool you get to see your dreams come true. Stay safe and please, keep posting. Hope I get to visit Cerro Gordo one day. Hi from Holland!
That is awesome! Thank you so much for the note. I hope you can visit someday as well
You're like the Bob Ross of Exploration!
That “some kind of structure” pile of rocks at 30:44 is where something is buried!
Facts
Or someone.
Still With You! Thanks Brent For The Reflection On LIFE! Forever Grateful for the adventure and the refreshing state of mind! Cheers man!
In the beginning, I was like, I sure hope he knows he needs a stove or something for the meals. You could also cold soak it. It'll take a couple hours or so to fully rehydrate the food, so you're gonna want to do it as you hike. Also, you need a sleeping pad!
Ther is something quite disconcerting hearing you say 'ooh look some collapse' followed by the sound of falling rock and the word 'oopsies'
And how he walks past it and continue on😅
Kendal mint cake is a traditional hikers treat to have when you’re hiking. Quite high in sugar but it’s very tasty! It’s from Kendal, Cumbria (also known as the Lake District).
I'm in the lakes at the minute. Absolutely love it here.
Now then young Brent, that has to be one of the the best content videos on RUclips I have had the
privilege to watch. What made it so good was the totally honest chat near the end Thanks Brent and
best wishes to you.Beautiful beautiful !!
Thank you Brent for sharing your adventures with us. I can almost smell the fresh air!
Glad you enjoyed it!
These solo videos are so much better, the vibe when it’s just you and us is much more immersive and entertaining. You have a talent as a solo entertainer. Well done.
Never would have thought of it that way but I think you got a point. Is he crazy or what? Lol. Thats what I wanna know.🙂
They are cool but id prefer he go with someone else if he is going to be entering mine-shafts
"Two tracks diverge and abandoned mine, and I took neither and thats has made all the difference" Love it :D
Brent,
Been following you for awhile now, and so far this has been your best video. Thank you so so much for the words of encouragement. I’m going through a rough patch now with my ex and looking to make a new life for myself. This has got to be the best words I’ve heard in a long time!
Thank you again so much!

I love mornings like this. Sunny, with that warmth and the scenery. Nothing like it. And your area in the morning is beautiful.
I’m at a point to when the weekend begins, i think: “yes, a new episode of Ghost Town Living”.
That escalated quickly
Same here. If he doesn't post, he's probably also dead
Blue rock is most likely azurite, Green would be Malachite , both an indicator of Copper
Are there any practical uses for Malachite or Azurite? Or is it just neat to look at?
Both were used as pigment in the old days, but I think jewelry is their main use now.
Neat! Thanks for the response. Though I figured as much. Still wanted to ask. 😎👍
i thought lapislazulli
@@michaelmich00 Lapis lazuli is found mostly in the Middle East, countries such as northeast Afghanistan , Pakistan, also Italy, Mongolia. It is found in the US and Canada but is not common. Not saying it cannot be found, just not a common as Azurite. Yes both were used as a pigment, and also jewelry
I just started watching your videos. I think it's awesome that you took the leap and your happy. I'm at that crossroads right now. I became a Harley Davidson Technician back in 2004. The first 3 years were great and it wasn't like a regular job. Now it's just a job. You've awoken my spirit to move on to what I really want. I'm in the ground digging. Hope to make out to Cerro Gordo. Thanks Brent, very inspiring 🙂✌
Wow. Your videos are fantastic. Not just the awesome location but also your relaxed style of talking to us, the viewer.... Only a few yt channels have this. So thank you for reminding me to get out hiking and camping.
you are living almost a real life minecraft mixed with elder scrolls...
It is really incredible to watch. Thanks for sharing your adventures
I’d say it’s more red dead redemption tbh
These Minecraft texture packs are getting crazy
He makes his videos so inspirational, how many of us could really say we could survive in a ghost town alone for 6 months. VERY FEW this is a brilliant man!
I loved this video! I am 75 now, living in Tn, but was raised in the desert in Nv and miss the beauty of that country. This country in Ca looks like home to me. I appreciate all your videos and commentary very much!
I had to comment on the last part of your video, I spent 20 years climbing the corporate ladder in finance and one day I got to the top and I felt lost. I was making 6 figures, had a $100k car, nice clothes etc. But I wasn’t happy and it was killing me inside. So I took a chance, I had to dig deep, what do I love, what makes me happy. I retired a couple years ago and I got in to antique dealing mainly jewelry. I feel like a kid again! Jewelry always made me happy and it’s something I will never get tired of. I can do what I do from anywhere, I can move wherever I want to, I’m free and out of the 9-5 rut. With the internet these days there are so many opportunities, I’ve seen people get in the corporate hamster wheel, I saw someone die at their desk, I saw someone retire at an old age and die quickly after. As Ferris Bueller once said, “life moves pretty fast, if you don’t stop and look around once in awhile, you could miss it.” Good night! 😊😊😊
