I am so glad you talked about Ants. I also sell Seeds and I tell my Customers that Ants steal seeds. This year, I actually sat and watched the Little Monsters :)
Yes Lord help me I am fighting them in my garden and spraying my dirt b4 I plant as I fight the spider mites here every week! Treating my dirt b4 I plant seems to really help .
I must have something that eats the ants, because I haven't had a problem with ants. There are a lot of different kinds of birds, don't know if they eat ants. I've heard hummingbirds eat mosquitoes, and there are a lot of hummingbirds during their season.
Just a side note, people new to corn should be aware of too: different varieties of corn need to be spaced out quite a bit since they're open pollinated, especially if you're seed saving, because they'll cross pollinate and might mess up your corn- particularly if they are different types- like dent and sweet. Thank you for the size recommendations for good trays for corn. I'm trying root trainers this year, since it's what I have, but if I can expand...well, now I know where to start.😊 I have only grown a small amount of corn, a couple times (our place is small, so we've never done more than a block of 12-18 for corn on the cob) and I've had good luck with planting them in pots I made from strips of paper feed sack. I let them get a little bigger, but the whole thing went in the ground, they grew through it and did great. Can't plant in the ground here in OR either. If it isn't ants, it's mice, pigeons/doves, or slugs as they come up. Praying for a bountiful harvest for all who make the effort to grow their food this year!
The slugs go after my tomatoes and hostas so I made some traps for them. They love cooked cabbage, grape juice, and beer. I take a 2 liter soda bottle and cut it in half, stick the top into the bottle, use a stapler and fix it together. Then I add the beer because I'm eating my own cabbage and cornbread with kielbasa or drinking my grape juice. A little every day keeps you regular and I hate prune juice lol. So beer lures them. They crawl in but can't get out! Tah-dah!! 😂 dead slugs!
I've never had a problem transplanting corn or carrots. As long as I transplant when it's really young. And must use deep well cell trays. Hopefully I'll do a video when I start planting them. Have a blessed day and happy gardening 🌿🌱😊🤗🌞
Thank you . I wanted to start corn in trays but was told they won't grow. So happy to see you prove them wrong. I'm gonna do this. And btw... You were so cute when you asked if you had dirt on your nose. Made me feel like I was watching a friend.
You are the FIRST one that I have ever heard mention that about the ants stealing the corn, and it makes a LOT of sense and I bet thats what happened to my corn years ago when I tried to grow some and it failed terribly. I just thought I buried it too deep, but I remember the garden being full of ants that year.
Will you plz do a folliw up video on what they look like (age) when time yo transplant) and show how deep on the plant you plant out in the garden, etc? Ive never grown any, but considering. Would like to learn.
Can't tell you how valuable this video is to me. I've never grown corn and have a lot of wild animals that love to eat it, but I'm finally gonna try to grow it for the first time this year.
Hey Mrs. Heart, I enjoy watching when both of you are in the video. My husband and I are planning to start a garden this season and I am learning a lot from Homestead Heart and others. I just let your playlist run while I slept and enjoyed. Thanks for all the good gardening advice. Keep up the good job. Sincerely, Wanda
I fence and row cover my corn until it is up enough to thrawrt the birds. I have soda/sugar traps around perimeter of my yard. June bugs ferment traps too. Buggers eat the silk.
Thank GOD for addressing the ant issue!!! I know GOD put them in the BIBLE, but LORD can they stay there?🤣🤣🤣. Love your videos‼️I’m in Zone 7b NC! ❤️🙏🏾❤️
Peace. We had the same problem with most of the seeds we planted directly in the ground. So I decided I would mostly plant seedlings. Between the squirrels, birds and dogs, something is always watching to dig up seeds.
Ok, i'm starting my corn seed today in toilet roll cores. The seedling roots can grow deep. Last year this worked great for me. I just have to move on it. The little pests won"t have a chance. Rain here in Olympia has been relentless this spring. Starting indoors works. I love your hoop house/greenhouse that you made. Your example set me on track to make a mini one over our u shaped raised bed.. It is two panels long. Waiting for the plastic and straps to come. You are a little bit of sunshine in my life. 🌽🌽🌽
Good afternoon I see you’re going to try yours in the toilet paper rolls. Will you be doing that inside or are you going to be doing that outside in the garden? I have never grown corn from the seed and that’s what I want to do this time and I’ve heard quite a bit about the paper rolls. Just wondering how you were doing it thank you.
@@wonderlymarshall6822 Last year I started seeds in toilet rolls by folding the snipped tabs in to create a floor to keep the dirt from washing away. I potted as many as I could fit standing up in large spinach tubs but I would drain off the run off water, which kept my windowsill dry. I have a small garden on part of a half acre so I don't plant as much as my dear Homestead Heart friends do. I did a sort of test run in our new place. 24 corn seeds and all but one seed performed great. Not huge corn cobs but I was pleased. You could cut off the cardboard or just open it up. I don't know if the cardboard has chemicals in it though, it is bio degradable. I have not looked into it. I planted two seeds in each tube. Planted outside when the frost date had passed and they were about 6"-8" tall. Paper dixie cups cut a "c" shape flap in the bottom, that you open up when planting works as a collar to keep predators from eating pea starts and sweet-peas. That worked for me also. Have fun experimenting!
Greetings sis. Watching you from England. Started my corn, butternut squash, pumpkin cucumbers indoors end of February to early march. Now I have put them in my little greenhouse. Still too cold and rainy to go out in the garden. Love your videos
Do you know how much I just love you? Not in a psycho stalker kind of way. Seeing you smile is so sweet. I prefer heirloom veggies except for corn. I bought some of your seeds last year and I started some in the house over last weekend. The cabbage is already coming up! And I think that the yellow squash is about to poke its way up too. I'm growing a ton of tomatoes this year. I'm waiting for the cushaw to come up and you'll know when that happens because you'll hear loud hollering come from up north in Wisconsin!
Oh ma I'm so glad to see you planting corn in trays lol. I get so tired of hearing ppl on YT say that corn can't be transplanted.. I'm in SE Louisiana and that is the ONLY way I've been able to grow corn successfully is by starting them inside then transplanting out once they're bigger and stronger.. I try to direct sow but as soon as they sprout a good rain comes thru or the wind knocks em down.. I did peaches and cream the last 3 yrs it's been my fave lol sucks it doesn't do well for yall I swear it's the sweetest most juicy and tender corn ooowee I can't wait to harvest some and slather some butta on it 🤭. Bless yall!
I live in a high valley surrounded by mountains, zone 5a, so I start my corn in cell trays, too. Our last frost can be as late as June 15, so it gives me a head start. Last year I planted twin rows, with two plants side by side in the raised row. That method did very well. I use bottomless cell packs for easier extraction. I save my potting soil from the year before, and rejuvenate it with a little compost, and press a hole in each cell, then add a little vermiculite, followed by the seed, and top it with some more vermiculite. It seems to do well.
This year I put my corn 🌽 in sandwich bags wrapped with paper towels and put them in trays I will plant them hopefully this week only if the weather is good
I planted corn in the ground last year. Well the blue jays decided they wanted it. They would pluck it out eat the corn seed and left the little green leaf on the side.
Oh my! I was wondering why my corn didn’t appear to germinate In areas of my garden. Thanks so much! The year of 2024 will be different when planting my corn.
I’ve never started my corn early with this method, some around here do, but I never had. It’s great way to get your corn early though. Looks great!! Happy gardening.
Have y'all ever tried the incredible corn. They use to grow lots of it in Kansas but now it's grown everywhere. The Amish in Ethridge, Tennessee grow it to eat and sale. It is a yellow. Sweet corn and it's absolutely delicious
I’m so glad I watched you & heard your good teaching! I’m going to do this-I have enough trays to start 100, then I’ll plant those & do a 2nd set. We haven’t grown corn in too long but this sounds promising. ❤
Hi My name is Leticia Mrs. thank you so much, for the sharing information. About the ant? I don’t know if you ever have tried put to cinnamon powder around the area that you want to protect. For me did good, in my roses.
The last time I tried growing corn, the crows came in and got it all. They sat in the trees watching me plant it! They even got the stuff that was sprouting.
I am so glad you are growing corn. I don't know why more people don't grow it. I love corn and also want to learn how to make corn meal. I am trying to only use Heirloom seeds because I worry about the government trying to control our being self-sufficient and I know they say non-heirloom have patents problems. I have already heard people starting to say growing gardens use up too much water so I think that is going to be what they use as an excuse to limit our growing. I will be keeping an eye out for more corn videos. 😊
Mrs. H, we just moved further east from Taylor county. We always had a terrible problem with the ants, too. We almost always got our corn seed from Kountry in Montezuma. We have grown silver queen, silver king, and Incredible with wonderful success. I am pretty sure they have the Bodacious, and Peaches and Cream, too. The feed and seed store in Butler usually has a few varieties also. We are trying a different variety from there this year. I just thought I would pass along that info in case it could be useful to you. 💜
Oh you are such a great teacher, know much on planting, following for sure. I will be planting silver queen, my favorite. Do you have a cooking channel? Sure you can cook great garden food. Thanks for all you do to help.
We're zone 8 also and we grow silver queen. I have never soaked my corn. I grew always planting corn unsoaked. Just learned this year from Mrs. H to soak but have already planted. If I have to replant will definitely soak before planting. Also since I plant my seeds in groups of 3 I have to thin them and I always take the extra out and plant them in spots that didn't produce.
Try spreading dried horse molasses in your garden. I learned that from an old timer and it has worked for years. I spread it in early spring and late fall. It does not harm animals and it feeds the soil. Win Win.
Interested in what you're doin. Corn is such a diva! Between the weather, and the bugs, and how thirsty they are, I just gave up a couple of yrs ago. BUT THEN, I planted some hard corn from my chicken scratch last yr, just for fun. Best idea ever! So this year I bought some Hopi Purple corn seeds from our area. Gonna give it a good try. Hope it works.
Thanks for video. I have transplanted corn as well. Really have few problems with anything I transplant. Many window of opportunity is the key. Thanks Happy Gardening zone 7a
Mrs H, its mid April and you would not believe how chilly it is in the uk. You cannot grow anything well in certain areas. Have you seen this video about the weather. RUclips: 'They've made WEATHER a weapon!' Its on Richard Vobes Channel and it may help you in certain aspects of planting.
I just started my corn on the 12th for the first time. I'm excited and nervous at the same time. They are already sprouting out of the tray. I told my 8 year old why buy groceries when you can grow it yourself. They put so much crap in our food who knows what we're buying these days.
I wish i had more room to grow corn. I tried last year, but i only had a small 4 foot by 4 foot area and i had to hand pollinate everything and it was just to much work for little yield. So, maybe one day i can grow it, but not now. I'll live vicariously through my RUclips Gardners 😂😂😂. I'll enjoy you all growing it and watching you for now.
Good morning and thanks so much for the corn video. I'll be starting my corn today as well. I've never heard of soaking them first so I'm on it this morning. Thanks for the tip and video. See you in the garden 🤗
You have better success because you are a PROFESSIONAL! Our favorite is peaches and cream, but can't grow any type due to the deer and raccoons! We have to hope that people have some to sell. I've mentioned to my husband that I was thinking about shooting a raccoon, cooking it to see how good the meat would be. My mother's sister used to bake them back during the Depression. She even made baked Groundhogs. I tried some lamb (greasy) and tried the groundhog meat when I was a teenager. It tasted better than the lamb meat to me. We just gave up on corn. We have put out coyote urine and motion lights but they still come after it. We're done. 😢 Buy it from a farmer or get it in cans is all we can get here.
This is my first year growing corn, feeling like I'm late here in 8b Coastal SC. Now, I feel it was meant to be cause I also have any issues. I will do the start as you just recommended. Thank you so much
Hey sis!!! We need to know where you got your greenhouse from please! Or what materials that you used! Please do a video on it!!!! We need your skills 🏆. Thank you kindly
I love your videos. I planted some corn last year and something kept cutting them. I will love to try again but afraid to do so. What would you suggest?❤
Ma'am may I ask what size is your shade cloth on your building? And the size of the building? And why did you pick that size? I'm trying to educate myself on these matters. Thank you for the video.
Thank you for this video!!! I have failed at corn every year. I wasn't going to try this year, but I'm going to do it 🙏🏽 so this video is RIGHT ON TIME!!! I would like to know about the seeds that you soak. Do you plant them wet or do they need to dry some or completely? Again, thank you💫💜
Would so appreciate it if you would make videos along the growing process. You have a way of being such a motivator .
You can never have too much corn!!😋

Thanks… I tried corn last year and didn’t soak it, will be sure to do that this time! You’re always dropping gems!!!
Is it canned corn or corn seeds???
Seeds!

We have put out coyote urine and motion lights but they still come after it. We're done. 😢 Buy it from a farmer or get it in cans is all we can get here.
I am going to try that!!
thank You .
I don't have an ant issue, but I think I'll soak them then plant directly in the ground
Have fun
Thank you for this educational video ❤
This is my first year growing corn, feeling like I'm late here in 8b Coastal SC. Now, I feel it was meant to be cause I also have any issues. I will do the start as you just recommended. Thank you so much
Thank you for all the knowledge you share. It is very much appreciated. Keep up the great work. Greetings from SC.
Thanks for the tip I always have problems with the ants eating my corn also. I'm going to try this method this year.
What month do you put your seeds in the plant cells??
Hey sis!!! We need to know where you got your greenhouse from please! Or what materials that you used! Please do a video on it!!!! We need your skills 🏆. Thank you kindly
We have a video on it. It’s our cattle panel greenhouse. Tfw
She has a video on the Cattle panel greenhouse. You can find it in the video section. ❤
A good idea. Thanks so much.
Love your videos….
Fantastic and helpful info. Have you ever dealt with Squirrels. We planted corn last year and non survived due to the squirrels each them.
Do you have a cat or dog? I'm sure they would chase off the squirrels.
