Yes, this would be "tOxIc" in real life, BUT remember this is a freaking fictional story where everything has a reason and you can see more perspectives and inderstand them. Both Naoki and Kotoko suffer in different ways, and are like that because their personalities are reeeeally different. Stop looking for this narratives to be realistic, you are destroying the reason why these type of stories were made in the first place!
I loved it but also found this a little too much. Where Kotoko is too much of a door mat. Irie is too cruel to her. However I came to terms after watching all of it. Those were just their personalities. Irie is a mean bastard but he says “where I can do 90 % of things Kotoko can do the 10% I will never be able to” (something like that. He doesn’t show it like ever, but when she’s not there and when someone challenges her place or position in his life (like the honeymoon tart) he confesses that no one compares to Kotoko. He admits that he doesn’t want anyone but her. His jealousy shows he’s incapable of PDA or even mildly show some respect or care for her but he’s had his moments where he has been extremely vulnerable and admitted he needs Kotoko more than she needs him. Again it doesn’t justify his shitty attitude I’ve cheered Kotoko on the few Occassions she’s stood up for herself and lashed at him but he’s got his way of crawling back in to her heart. His mother is super funny I loved her and she knows he’s a pig but she’s done a lot for Kotoko. I just wish Irie would be less cruel to Kotoko if not an apology scene at the end would have been nice.

I honestly gained a whole new perspective of her crush on Irie after my own experience of realizing my (now former) crush wasn't meant to be. I never actually dated him but I did try to ask him out for coffee when I last saw him. Sometime after that is when it was confirmed he was not interested through Twitter messages. At first I didn't know how to react because there was something off by the way he responded. As time went on, I thought it over and made the realization that it was a huge favor on my behalf. Being single the whole time is what helped me shape up my own character development. The thought of staying single made me feel better about myself because I can keep focusing on what I want to do next in life. I may never know if I'll meet someone else in my future, but I feel so fortunate to have made this realization when I did.

In the manga Irie Naoki's character gets jealous of kotoko getting comfortable with kotoko thus he said yes to Matsumoto......on the top of it didn't understood ie he's not good with understanding human emotions . Kotoko completes him this he only understood after he again gets jealous 😂 His personality may be a little bad but certainly he never cheats so think kotoko got lucky to get such a guy........
These type of protagonist was popular back in mid to late 00s romcom animes. I honestly prefer jerk but actually nice in his own way type of guy like Naoki here over the boring, self insert no personality protagonist(s) we got in recent romcoms

i don't really like the anime bc it makes this relationship sooo toxic but i love the manga, everything is more explained for example there irie decides to go on a date with matsumoto bc he thought that sudou and kotoko had a thing (he was kinda jealous bc of that he even wanted to play a tennis match against sudou). in the anime kotoko asks him to go to the cinema before matsumoto but in the manga she never asked him that, only matsumoto did and that makes sense.
similar to the 2013 version "mischievous kiss love in tokyo'' in that version matsumoto asked him if he wants to watch a movie with her and he hasn't reply to her yet until he saw kotoko lying on the ground with sudou on top of her and matsumoto then took advantage of the situations and made up some lies saying that there's rumors in the tennis club about kotoko and sudou having an affair lol.
This dude needs to try losing her so he regrets it and always be alone and die alone forever. Kotoko is too sweet for him although she can be annoying with her Irie-Kun obsession at times. I hope she divorces this lil shit in her 30s or sumthin and marry a rich and a lot handsomer guy who is crazy about her.
