  • Lesson on cellulitis and erysipelas: similarities and differences, pathogenesis, signs and symptoms, diagnosis, treatment and Complications. Cellulitis and erysipelas are both skin infections caused by bacteria, particularly most commonly caused by streptococcus and staphylococcus bacteria. Cellulitis and erysipelas differ in the layer of skin that is infected or involved in the infection. Furthermore, systemic symptoms are typically more involved in the erysipelas as opposed to cellulitis and they both have different timings of onset.
In this lesson, we discuss the risk factors of getting cellulitis and erysipelas, how to make the diagnosis of these skin infections, what antibiotics we use to treat each of these infections, and some of the complications of having these infections. We also discuss a variety of atypical bacterial causes of cellulitis depending if a patient was exposed to freshwater, saltwater, hot tubs or if bitten by a human, animal or tick.

3 ER docs diagnosed me with both of these conditions bc I presented with red, swollen ears.. turns out I was having an allergic reaction 😩😩 3 weeks on strong antibiotics for nothing.. they didn't listen when I said it was probably a reaction to something.. suffered nearly two months.. Prednisone finally saved me 🙏🏽 Thank God for the one doctor who listened.

Hi, for how long you were prescribed prednisone?
I am suffering from a similar problem, since 3 months, antibiotics arent working, no other medication working, its all started spontaneously one day after working on fields during rain and storm, with too much pollens etc in the air.

Gosh. I guess I’m going to the doctor. Last week I woke up with a swollen ear. It was hot and hurt. I kept it clean, put antibiotic cream on it. After a few days it went away. This week I have some type of hot rash around my nose and my lower leg. I don’t have risk factors except kind of overweight.
Thank you as I for sure will see a doctor.

This is horrible the pain tender legs swelling so tight the sores just break open and start pouring with liquid very unpleasant I'm not out of the woods yet l have to be careful not to scratch as it has an attentive to come back. And really don't want to go back into hospital so there it is I'm home still so l wont be going any where iam so fed up and there is not much other than try and get your head around it

you will come out at the other end. I had exactly what you described 8 years ago and oedema - one month off work - it hurt to even put my legs down off the bed or couch. Had 7 reoccurring episodes since. Fast forward to now - I'm diagnosed with chronic vein insufficiency and prescribed 30-40mg compression stockings knee high open toe. Going great so far, but must take care of legs - I point my toes upwards to work the calf muscles (our second heart) for blood flow.

Sorry to hear about your condition
Yes it's debilitating my legs got to a point where they could have been cut off below the knees but a high up wounds nurse saved them and iam also very Grateful to my son the nurse gave the instructions to him and every day did as advised it was alot to go through the pain was unbearable but l just had to grin and bere it my legs now need compression as well as the Antroquoril cream and the QV cream
It's just something l have to do on a daily basis to save my legs iam more posative now and it's just routine
I hope you are much better as iam
I hate it but it's got me and l don't want it back it's Lymphoedema now but l just go with it there is no warning when you get a pain.

there are videos out there that explain how to treat these kinds of things naturally... it will take a lot more effort and work to get your immune system back to where it needs to be, you'll likely need to change your diet and start exercising and losing weight, but if you have a skin condition like this you really need to be doing all of that anyways.
the drugs he listed should only be used when there is no other option.

Cellulitis is not a skin condition like acne or eczema. It is a life-threatening infection that will kill you if left untreated. There is a time and place for antibiotics and having cellulitis is it.

I noticed it back in Nov it kept growing I was in so much pain. Well Iam a bit worried and scared to be honest cause even thou I was given medication to fight the infection my boil was on my back. Now I have a bumb and it feels like I have pins and needles on my back on the the site of the infection. Can’t sleep on my back it also hurts when I put pressure and I feel a bumb. This is annoying.

I was hospitalized last October with my face very red and swollen and with a fever. Clindamycin did nothing, IV Vancomycin nothing- in fact my fever spiked to 103 and my face got more swollen and my eyes looked like blisters and were almost completely shut. IV Levaquin worked and I was put on a secondary antibiotic. Both of these were diagnosed but my GP , who saw me both days I was in hospital, ruled them both out. Still no diagnosis .My face still get red and warm at night.
