      I like him, but the name pronunciation thing bugs me. I speak a few languages, and my name is pronounced differently in each. It never bothers me. I know that is the equivalent of my name or just how it will be said.
      Note: one of the languages includes the one his name is from, and writing it in Roman characters (as English is) limits the ability of others to pronounce it "correctly".

How my name is said in English vs my native tongue is different, and it is pronounced differently in other languages in other countries I lived in. At the same time though, I mean there's more of some basic respect that I like to hear when people say my name - for example, I do hope that people spell it correctly (especially on things like email replies where my name is already there), say my whole name (just two syllables, but people like shortening it for some reason), and at least I personally prefer it when people try to pronounce it the way I like (which is also very easy in English, by the way)

    Not just in Saudi Arabia, UAE has totally different pay structures for various Asian workers vs. Americans , etc. My husband worked in Dubai for a decade. He rose through the ranks of a multinational engineering firm eventually because he is exceptionally hard working and talented, but being Pakistani made it a slow process because even Indian managers discriminated against him.

    • @eskarinakatz7723
      @eskarinakatz7723 Год назад +5

      Considering the border beef that India and Pakistan seem to have, it’s entirely possible that they may have actually made it harder, though I do have to note that geopolitical tensions don’t necessarily translate into workplace issues. And it’s not a simple correlation either, what with the aforementioned pay structure differences! It’s a complicated thing!

    • @shawkiizzat
      @shawkiizzat Год назад +7

      It’s not an Indian thing, or a Pakistani thing, or even a south Asian problem for that matter. The way they mostly see it is that your ethnicity is registered before your professional skills. They don’t see an engineer first, they see a race, and depending on how saturated a particular race is, they see the person as easily replaceable. So say for example you’re a hardworking Indian or Pakistani or Bangladeshi and if you try communicating that you’d like to get a promotion, the management doesn’t entertain those requests seriously because they’ll just replace you with another person of your race because of how densely populated the UAE is with desis.
      As far the south Asians at higher positions are concerned, they always look at young folks as a threat. In healthy work cultures, superiors feel the need to mentor somebody new and they genuinely feel a sense of happiness when they see somebody they’ve trained climb up the ranks. Unfortunately, much like in the case of the person you mentioned and for many others, those people view new folks of the same race as a threat to replace them, so they don’t bother much in terms of mentorship or defense.

    • @baronesselsavonfreytag-lor1134

      @@eskarinakatz7723 That's generous of you but even though the uneven pay is company policy, Indian workers told my husband when he granted their requests for vacation days or whatever, "My family and I are surprised that you are so nice, growing up we were told that Pakistani people are monsters who eat babies". The "border beef" is mostly one-sided because of the violent xenophobia of the Modi government and right wing extremist Hindu nationalists. They are constantly spreading misinformation and blaming Pakistan for stuff they do.

      @@shawkiizzat Thanks for your perspective! The way it’s explained could also be used to explain how, among others, misogynistic discrimination and trans discrimination in the workplace may work-not seeing a person for their skills, but rather for their being a woman or trans (especially if they don’t pass as their true gender vs their Assigned Gender At Birth (AGAB)).

      you should learn, it’s such a fun language and you can express things you can’t in english. super cool. especially if you’re fidgety like me, it can be easier to learn than spoken word

    Honestly, my kid stopped letting me dictate her reading choices at around 3 when, on one of our regular library visits, I introduced her to the children's graphic novel area. After that, she refused to check out "baby books".

    Our schools need to be reformed. We have to teach children to think. What it means to be a part of society. Why we all matter. We need to end grading, the children are there to learn, and not to be judged.

      I basically agree. The weird thing about the US is that they have both some of the best and the worst teachers in the world. I often use their teaching ideas but am apalled when I read about the quality of teaching of other teachers in the US.
