    @AI Addict Waymo has expanded to way more places than just Chandler. They now have fully driverless robotaxis in the majority of SF as well as all of downtown Phoenix, including the Phoenix airport. They are just not charging money for the driverless rides in SF yet like Cruise is. They also recently announced that they plan to expand fully driverless to LA next. So Waymo has expanded fully driverless robotaxis to multiple areas, beyond Chandler.

    • @TheDoggydogworld
      @TheDoggydogworld Год назад

      They specifically said paid service, though. Waymo only charges fares in the Chandler service area, not downtown Phoenix. I agree it's a fine line to draw. Speaking of fine lines, Waymo's beta SF taxi service is NOT driverless. The videos they post are all from employee test rides, not "Trusted Testers". And they don't actually serve the busy Phoenix airport, but the SkyTrain depot on a nearby property (you take a short train ride to reach the airport itself). And the SkyTrain depot service uses safety drivers, so not yet driverless.

    • @TheDiplomat27
      @TheDiplomat27 Год назад

      @@TheDoggydogworld Correct. The SF service for the "trusted riders" is not driverless yet but employees can do driverless. CA requires a special permit to charge a fare for driverless rides, different from the permit to test driverless. For some reason, CA regulators have not yet granted Waymo the permit to charge money for driverless even though they can do driverless for employees. It is a weird regulation IMO. If you have a permit to do driverless why would you need a separate permit just to charge money for the same thing? The SkyTrain services the airport so I count that as the airport. Waymo does say they plan to remove the safety driver for the ride-hailing to the SkyTrain in "coming weeks". So I suspect it will probably be driverless by the end of this year.

    San Francisco says that as GM started deploying its fleet of driverless Chevrolet Bolts on city streets, the 911 calls started racking up. In late May 2022, city officials started noticing an uptick in calls related to Cruise vehicles. City police officers started noticing disabled autonomous vehicles sitting, blocking travel lanes. Emergency callers reported Cruise vehicles driving erratically, in one instance signaling in one direction but heading in another, or parking themselves in front of transit vehicles.
    And then the backups started.
    “The most common complaint to 9-1-1 [regarding Cruise vehicles] has been about Cruise AVs blocking travel lanes for extended periods causing traffic backups,” the city said. “In some cases, callers reported evasive maneuvers by others such as driving on a sidewalk to get around the blockage.”
    But it’s not just because one Cruise vehicle is stopping the middle of the road. It can be many of them, all at once.
    Thirteen Cruise robotaxis stopped simultaneously on a major arterial street in June, the city said. Two more “large group incidents” were reported to San Francisco in August. Cruise declined to comment on the claims of “group incidents” involving its vehicles.
    A full third of the 28 emergency calls related to Cruise vehicles placed between May 28 and Sept. 5 “involved multiple non-operational Cruise AVs and affected multiple travel lanes.” Though the city said it lacks reliable data on the number of incidents, they can last hours.

    Remember that these cars are equipped with high precision lidars, and GPS sensors. Also they only drive in areas that have a high precision map that needs to be generated before the car can drive that. The speed bumps are probably not detected by the car but read from the map data. It’s a totally different setup to what Tesla is doing. Their cars are training for any road and situation in the entire world. It’s much harder to do than these robots taxis.

    But how is this system working that it is so much better, what are the technical differences compared to Tesla. Is it having an extremely detailled map? Or could it go in any town?
    But Tesla struggles with complicated traffic situations we haven't seen here.
    How would this taxi behave, if
    a big semi would want to back up into a drive way or parking spot and needs space, if
    a garbage truck blocks the road, if
    the street gets too narrow for 2 cars, if
    road is closed because of construction with not super clear barriers or confusing cones, if
    other vehicles don't give you space to merge into a lane for turning at the next junction, if
    an unprotected left gets confusing because the gap is getting too small because of suddenly accelerating cross traffic
    etc.

    • @hshing
      @hshing Год назад

      @@AIAddict Good point! I believe they have to calculate for dynamic situations, i.e. cars, pedestrians etc. However, road construction may involve bigger "less dynamic" changes, such as number of lanes, road block, detour ... I wonder if those are handled by real-time computation or require updates of map data.

    • @paulmeynell8866

      It uses HD mapping and off board route planning.
      The route is sent to the car and it sticks to that predetermined route.
      If it gets stuck it just stops and puts its hazard lights on.
      It’s great to use in small towns if you put the effort in , but level 5 fsd is Tesla’s dream where the car can go anywhere in the world without any other input.

    • @hshing
      @hshing Год назад

      @@paulmeynell8866 Yes, I think Tesla’s effort toward level 5 is the way to go. It is a long-term global solution.

    • @communityband1
      @communityband1 Год назад

      @@hshing I think there may be no point in pursuing level 5 autonomy. If you're going to have a car that can handle literally every situation a human can handle, it actually needs to be as smart as a human. And if you can invent an AI capable of that, self-driving cars are just one tiny application for it. Your AI might create self-driving cars for you. 🙂Experts generally expect we're a long way away from artificial general intelligence. But for those working on it, there are likely better domains to start with where data collection and variation is simpler. My guess is that race will be won, if in fact it is won, by a company dedicated to AI research, and not one that's tied to a particular product domain.
      Keep in mind that Elon Musk and Tesla have backed off their claims to be pursuing Level 5. They now claim Level 4 in their public statements, though in their statements to regulators, they assure that FSD City Streets in its final release form will still be Level 2.
