    It's absolutely true - I bought one back in 2006 as I wanted a "fun" car for a couple of years, and 13 years later I still have that same car, looking stock, with absolutely no plans to part with it. I see so few on the roads here that it's an absolute joy when you see another one. You don't just buy these cars, you fall in love with them.

    BEST way to put it. This kid had me in tears...dreaming about my '87. The way he describes ownership of one of these cars is spot on. You could own any car in the world, but a budget car that is so damn versatile and fun is so damn rare. God bless the designers and builders of this one-of-a-kind legend that will never die.

    • @Godmason
      @Godmason 9 лет назад +2

      Thebergla The 3S-GTE's stock power output is like 220hp, and the transaxle means the factory RWHP is about 180. Though people have done it, I wouldn't recommend a high-power build for the 3S-GTE because it simply doesn't have the aftermarket support of engines like the K/B-series, the SR20DET, or the 4G63T.
      The SW20 is more about cornering than straight line speed.

    Being a Kid of the 80s, watching Sonny Crockett driving that Open Top Ferrari in the middle of a hot summer night on TV stuck to me. All tough I knew that I would never ever own a Ferrari - I will never forget that special moment in my life with the MR2. In 2003, I purchased a black MR2 with T-Tops. That summer we had a heat wave in Europe. I took my MR2 for a spin-putting on the Jan Hammer Miami Vice Soundtrack CD, and drove with open tops the whole night. It was just a Toyota…but for me, it was like a dream came true. That's why the MR2 always has a special place in my heart. It definitely IS …a poor man's Ferrari. ;)

    I saved a mk1 mr2 a week from being scrapped at a pick a part.. Bought the car for for only a grand and it ran perfect with little to no rust.
    I must admit, I'm in love. Nothing I've ever driven has made me feel so connected to the road. It seems like all you have to do is think about where you want the car to be and it's there. Plus having a cosworth designed 4age surging behind you makes it that much better. I will never sell this car.. Ever.

    I saw this video when I was 15 years old and never saw an MR2 before. I immediately knew it was what I wanted for my first car. I worked and saved for the next 4 years, spent 3 years just trying to find one somewhat locally until I finally did - a 91 Turbo model (in my thumbnail picture). That was when I was 18 or 19. I'm 26 now, and the car is still in my garage. It's not going anywhere! To this day I get people taking pictures and running up to me in parking lots because either they don't know what it is and want to know, or they do know what it is and want to ask me about it. It's a good feeling! It's nice to pull in to a meet of 500+ cars and no one else is in the car you're in, at least in western Michigan. These cars a special for sure!

    I may not be part of the 3S-GTE crowd but even with the 170hp version of my 3S-GE, its still an incredibly fun car to drive. It's my first RWD, mid-engined, petrol sports car but I hope it's my last. The connection I have with my MR2 is something I'll never be able to put into words but ever since I was a kid, I've been unable to take my eyes off of the one I have today. 13 Years dry stored, abandoned and with a bleak looking future, I pulled her out of that unit and now she sits in my driveway every night. It's a feeling that will never go away. From the age of 7 I always knew that the MR2 was THE car for me. I've had the privilege that not many 19 year olds have gotten and I've driven all sorts of JDM Icons from the R33 GTST to the SC300 Soarer, Silvia S15 and so on, yet each and every time, the MR2 has come out on top for me. Every time I get in that car and go for a drive, the world around me seems to melt and I just feel like its me and the car on the road. Nothing else in that present moment matters and its just the sound of the engine to keep me planted in reality. Yea she has her blemishes but at 32 years old, I don't expect perfection and in fact, it's something I adore about my MR2. There's beauty in imperfection. Like the way the bumper makes her face look a touch wonky or the slightly mismatched colours on the front wings. It's all part of why I love this car and always will. For as long as I drive, I intend to always have this specific MR2 and if by some chance I don't, I'll always go back to the SW20. It was a dream car and now its a DREAM car. There's something special that connects you to these cars and the feeling will always remain unmatched

    • @ModifiedImportsandDomestics
      @ModifiedImportsandDomestics 10 месяцев назад

      It's always been one of my favorite Japanese cars. The MR2 feels a bit more special and is better looking than alot of the other jdm cars of the time. I think the MR2 is very overlooked. The skyline and supra are very overhyped. Yes they are great cars but being in one doesn't feel special it feels like being in any other toyota or nissan so i could never justify their super car price tag these days.

I'm the only one who has a MR2 Turbo or just a mr2 in general. The MR2 has been my favorite car since I was a little kid. I've had 2 mustang gt's 89,92. I've had a Honda CRX in high school and I loved it but I would have to say my MR2 is the best one of them all. I got a red 91 that I just started restoring this summer. The 2 red MR2's in this video are close to what I want mine to look like when I'm finished.

    I was going through my old box of hot wheels/ toy cars from when I was growing up. Realized the one I always played with was an 2nd gen mr2. The beauty of that car was imprinted on my mind at an early age and that it all made sense as to why I fell in love with my first car..... a 93 mr2. Only lasted 2 years until my inexperienced driving skills at the time cost me the car. Ive tried to fill the void with a mkIII supra but it doesn’t do it. I want another sw20

    I never get tired of watching this vid. I own an MR2, and it's a real head turner. I get asked stuff about my car all of the time, compliments galore. I have the 5s but I'm swapping it pretty soon (fingers crossed) not for more speed, but because the 5s is old, and will need parts soon. I want a newer, upgraded engine for the mileage advantages, I want to drive this car forever.

    This video bought back so many great memories when I had my 93 MR2 Turbo! Bought it new, tuned it and drove it for over 5 years. I never forgot how the 3SGTE sounded and felt! That was the golden age when Toyota still made great sports cars like the Supra Turbo and Celica GT-Four. The MR2 is a very special car I miss so much. Oh how I wish I had kept it and never sold it!

    Thanks for the video... I'm driving an MR2 since 2 years now. This is not the most faster car that I had but it's my favorite. The feeling that you have when you drive it is just amazing. And as the guy said in the video "it's car that you keep". I'm looking for a new car now but I will not sell my MR2. I love it.

    100% true. My first car was an 87 aw11. Got it in 2006 and decommissioned in 2010 after my engine seized up on me. It's been sitting in my garage waiting to be restored and I will NEVER get rid of it. In fact, I'm in the market for another aw11.

      GripHobby I don't know much about MR2s (I do love the SW20 though) but I saw a supercharged AW11 in Hobart, Tasmania and even I knew it was rare. Didn't even know they existed until I saw that one. And of course, it was two tone white and grey, with SUPERCHARGED in big fuck-off 80s lettering. Yes, I did smile widely as I walked by :)

    Didn't this car become an instant classic recently? Either way it is the best looking car out of the MR family.
    Would be nice to test one out. And compare it to my "OMFG it's an S2000"

    These are extremely rare here in Italy, it's definitely easier to spot Ferrari, Lambos etc. I'm glad Petrolicious covered the MR2 so I can appreciate it too, and I admit I'd love to drive one.

    First car I ever bought. It's been six years; I remember bringing it home and my sister's reaction was "it doesn't look good", and of course, my immediate response was "I didn't buy it for it's looks" ... A relatively modern, mid-engined, back-wheel drive manual at such a bargain is a no brainer for a petrol-head 1st year college student I went on to explain.
    That same night I took it to my friends. The car immediately commanded respect from the 'petrolhead' crowd -- which by default, extended on to me. :D
    It was an absolute joy to drive. And the winding Scottish roads somehow seemed to subconsciously make me get in the car on most weekends and make the long trip back home from college knowing that home was a boring way to spend my weekend. But I digress. The response was good, but the feedback from the road was bar none for me at the time. I loved taking on those bendy Scottish roads and knowing EXACTLY how far I could push it. It was a visceral experience. This car is an unadulterated pure machine, and I like pure machines; which is why the 997 GT3 RS is my dream car.
    Thanks for the homage.
