I have been asked, from time to time, how I do the Eddie Van Halen trademark harmonic horse winnie (or scream)...so I thought I'd make a short video, to show how I do it. I have learned this technique by watching others play it in the past. So hopefully you can now learn it as well. I hope you enjoy the video and keep jamming!!

great tip! I never tried to do a pinch harmonic to do a dive bomb, I always did it with natural harmonics... thanks!!!

I believe on the “tap harmonics” are always on the 5th, 7th and 12th fret from where you are fretting the string. An example would be if you are using a finger to “fret” the D string on the third fret - you would “slap” the string with the other hand directly on the 8th or 10th or 15th fret. This (if done right) will cause the string to “ring” at a harmonic.
Ain’t physics fun?!
Oh damn - so you cover more ground by hitting both. That says a LOT right there...because half the time I do end up missing unless I plan ahead exactly where I'm going to pick. My mission then...to incorporate this into my next video - whatever it is. Lessons learned but not implemented are wasted - so it's time to apply it. Thanks brother!!!

We saw them at the Carrier Dome in 1989. We were the entire football field plus the end zone plus about 20 rows of seats away from the stage. The horse sound made the hair on the back of my neck stand up every time. It was intense.

For the longest time i was having a problem grabbing it at the 2nd&3d fret and getting it to ring out until i changed my setup from ( boss me80 processor ) and just using my 5150 Amps Distortion -i guess the higher the gain the more it will ring out-now it’s just ridiculous effortless

What you call a "country bend" is the whole reason I have to have a hard tail guitar. Every time I picked up anything with any kind of tremolo bridge when I was growing up, I couldn't bend one string and hold the other without the one that isn't bending, going south. That's why I don't even try anything like a strat or a shredder with a floyd rose or anything like that. So how do you do it without detuning the unbent string? Anyway thanks for the content!
Thank you for watching brother, Craig!! Yes Sir, I remember that happening if I was doing a bend with a floating tremelo system. If I had the low E string ringing, while doing a bend, it would sound horrible. So thankfully, with the non-floating systems, this issue does not occur. If I'm using a floating system, I just try and make sure not to have any open strings ringing, while performing the bends. Thank you again for watching my friend and I hope you have a wonderful day!!
On a non-floating trem you can increase spring tension to keep the bridge from being pulled forward when you bend.
does low output pickup caused me failed to this? mine has 8.3k output
Yes...unfortunately a low output pickup would make this a lot harder to achieve. I'm sorry my friend. Maybe some extra overdrive from a pedal, could possibly help. Thank you for watching and commenting. I hope you have a wonderful day. 🎵
I can get virtually all of these harmonics but I can never get the exact one at 3:40. You seem to get an octave higher (or so) than I can get. What's the trick? I see G string, 2nd, fret whole step bend pinch harmonic pick. I have the gain, hot pickups, all that stuff but this one eludes me!
Where you hit the string with your right hand makes a lot of difference. I have trouble with it too sometimes.

These guitars harmonic themselves with little effort. And I dont run my guitars into really expensive shit just a little fender champ with a distortion/overdrive.
Note to self: l need a delay pedal
