This is beautiful - my father is still around, he is self taught hobbyist, very knowledgably hands on, we have a SB 9a I acquired at an estate sale. I dont see him much as we work different schedules but time shared together is around the lathe. I wish he had a box to hand me down, all his tools are in plastic bins and stashed in corners of the basement lol. I have two Gerstner boxes I also picked up at a different estate sale, I greatly appreciated the craftsmanship behind them, they were loaded with tools, the previews owners entire machining career in both boxes. My father and I spent the entire day going through the tools, figuring out what is what. Gerstner boxes gives me a sense of organization and appreciation for the trade. As the next chapter of my life is about to start, I am prioritizing work shop space as my wife and I start searching for our own home. With a interest also in woodworking, I hope to build a box one day and gift it to my father as a thank you for everything he did for me. A part of me also hopes he uses it to organize all the lathe tools out of the plastic bins he has stashed all over the basement lol. Thank you for sharing your video.

Out of passing interest, I think Gerstner sells fittings felt parts etc for most everything they ever made... and offers complete rebuilding/refinishing for anyone interested.
Also, it's been years, but I seem to recall seeing where Gerstner boxes are dated somewhere; perhaps on the bottom of the lower drawer. There's been some recent RUclips videos posted on them.
    Anyway, interesting videos, Thanks!

Hi Phil, I have enjoyed your videos. Gerstner dated their boxes. Pull out the bottom drawer and cover and look inside. Abom79 has an excellent video of a tour of the Gerstner factory.

Phil, I'm a former Erieite and former machinist. Actually worked at RM Kerner many years ago. Great videos.

Nothing like a Gerstner. I retired 4 years ago and still have my tools. I have a finished basement where my Gerstner sits atop of a bench. Every time I go past it I smile. I will probably sell or donate all of my larger Kennedy carts and chests of tools, but I can not see by Gerstner leaving me!

After 25 years in the T &D trade I decided to buy a Gerstner tool box, it was the same model as yours. After the 25th anniversary I moved on to a business that was extra-clean and the work was very clean. I was a jewelry factory in N.J. Stayed there till retirement 47yrs. and would go back tomorrow. Tool boxes and tools went to the graduating apprentice that ghosted me for his 4 years. Well deserved...P.S the company did give me an honest price for the kit...

There should be a number written in pencil on the back of each drawer. Give that number to Gerstner and they will tell you the exact day it was made .

Very cool story! I think I would put a piece of glass over the mirror to just protect the number 2 from getting erased by accident. Thank you for sharing your story, I can relate.

Phil, use "Aqua Coat" for your filler. It works great for a glass like finish. An old diemaker.

A Gerstner with a white apron over it. Old times! And obsolete now.
