  • An intro to Maya's Render Setup editor, a powerful tool for preparing render layers for compositing.
    These lectures were originally built for a college VFX class that I teach, taking students from beginner to intermediate level. Over the course of this 9-hour course, brush up on PBR surfacing with UDIMs, learn about lighting, AOVs, render layers, batch and sequence rendering, EXR compositing, and ACEScg with Maya, V-Ray, and After Effects.

    This answered my question about getting AOVS with my render layers without having the master layer on!

    Not sure if you mentioned it or not but do you think this workflow/layer rendering would work fine for Arnold > After Effects?
    I've cooked a beautiful scene for Pwnisher's Eternal Ascent... But I'd really like to render my scene out in layers, at the very least I'd like my two characters to be separated from the environment, but would also be cool to render even more passes...
    The scene also uses Ai atmosphere, I'm wondering if I could render a fog pass the same way you rendered the clouds..? Not sure because I'm pretty sure I would need an alpha channel/black so I could set the blending mode to screen and I'm praying that the characters shadows will still be cast!

      Arnold AOVs have different names, but it's essentially the same workflow. Same for the render layers. I believe Arnold has a shadow catcher material.

      Awesome, I've cooked some of my best work for Pwnisher's Eternal Ascent challenge and would love to render it like a pro! I always render my entire scene as a single EXR sequence...... Noob moves.@@CGStirk

    Have any of the issues in this lecture been remedied in newer versions of Maya, V-Ray and After Effects?

    Awesome Series! Thank you for this great content. I see how usefull is to render layers one by one but unfortunately we do not have the Razor Crest shadows on the clouds anymore with this workflow :/

    • @CGStirk
      @CGStirk  2 года назад +2

      Ah yes, we will cover how to do this in a follow-up video while we work on the shot shown in Part 01. Basically, we would leave the Razor Crest on the cloud layer and override the Primary Visibility to Off as long as the clouds don't pass in front of it. This means it would be invisible to the camera, but still visible to the scene and would cast shadows. Alternatively, we can override the Razor Crest with a material override using the V-Ray Mtl Wrapper. This allows for more control if the clouds do pass in front of it. This can get more complicated quite quickly so I left them out of this intro video.

    Really comprehensive
    I think if you enable "Use Display Color Mangement" from the View menu, you don't need to use Color Profil Converter!
    you get the same result.

    • @CGStirk
      @CGStirk  2 года назад +1

      Thanks, actually you would have to disable Use Display Color Management and interpret input and output to Preserve RGB. That's too many steps for me. The Color Profile Converter is one step once.

    • @CGStirk
      @CGStirk  2 года назад +1

      @@TheElrachyd Yes, the result is the same, but it requires more steps and is more error-prone in my opinion.

      Thanks for this.
      I still struggle to move from the old legacy render layer which I find very straightforward, but a bit clunky and buggy and I am afraid it will vanish in the near future from Maya.

    i fallow yor course till part 10 but here i start to lost bcos im useing 3d max there no layer comp can u make same part 10 but with 3d max ?

    • @CGStirk
      @CGStirk  2 года назад +1

      So with 3ds max, since there is no layer system, there's a few things you can do. There are state sets, which are incomplete and hard to use, scene states (probably better for this but hard to use), or you could xref your camera into separate max files. None of these solutions is great. There's also RPManager, which is laggy af, and Vexus, but you can easily ruin your scene if you use the same workflows as discussed here, but these are mostly for rendering different camera sequences from the same file. 3ds max is not suited for these workflows unfortunately.
