Brian Vega we always get them as tight as we can make them so you aren't feeling like you are trying to grab the cymbal. If you hold it out in front of you and it is dangling any then it should be tighter.
When we cut our own we start with 3 inches of free strap then wrap around your hand like you are in the garfield grip and pull 3 inches past before cutting. Then after you cut your first strap and tie it, you will see how much excess strap is left. This lets you know if you should cut shorter or longer for the next strap.
We used needle nose pliers.
How tight would you usually want the strap to be on your hand?

How Long Is The Strap??
We make each one specific to each player. Most of my high school kids have really small hands as compared to my Drum Corps kids.
