This song represents to me that true kindness doesn’t require reciprocity.
When you do something good simply because it’s the right thing to do, it makes life worth living.
If you can help, even if it’s as simple as just being polite, it counts. If you can do more, you’re often doing yourself more of a favour than the recipient.
Life is compromised of moments that all add up to what sort of person you want to be. I’m old now, and I’m sorry for some of the things I did, but I’m sure glad I helped a little.

@@raymondmanderville505 Well, Jesus says don't let your right hand know what your left hand is doing. Yes, don't look for any immediate reward or you may not do it. Just do it because it is what God tells us to do, because it is the right thing to do, and God will reward you in the resurrection of the just. 😉

James Wells, Moderator of the United Free Church of Scotland, tells the story of a little girl carrying a big baby boy in his 1884 book The Parables of Jesus. Seeing her struggling, someone asked if she wasn't tired. With surprise she replied: "No, he's not heavy; he's my brother."

In 1918, Fr Flanagan saw one boy carrying his crippled brother on his back. When he asked if the boy was heavy, the older one replied:
“He ain’t heavy; he’s my brother, Father.”
This inspired Fr Flanagan to adopt the response as a slogan for Boys Town, and it, in turn inspired the famous song, which became a hit for the Hollies in 1969 and Neil Diamond in 1970.
This is where the saying is from.

Hi Dee and Chod! I have a story for this song. My brother died suddenly at the age of 23. Myparents said Icould choose the song for the funeral, "But don't make it too loud" She knew I liked rock and prog. This was still the time of vinyl and record player, I decided whatever was on the turntable was the song for the funeral. My mouth dropped when I saw this was the song.

Love this group. The Hollies are a British pop rock group formed in 1962 & known for their great harmonies. They were part of the Merseybeat scene. They had so many great songs such as "Bus Stop", "Stop Stop Stop", "On A Carousel", "Carrie Anne", "Just One Look", "Here I Go Again", "Look Through Any Window", "King Midas In Reverse", "Jennifer Eccles", "Long Cool Woman In A Black Dress" & "The Air That I Breathe". The title came from the motto for Boys Town, a community formed in 1917 by a Catholic priest named Father Edward Flanagan. Located in Omaha, Nebraska, it was a place where troubled or homeless boys could come for help. In 1941, Father Flanagan was looking at a magazine called The Messenger when he came across a drawing of a boy carrying a younger boy on his back, with the caption, "He ain't heavy Mr., he's my brother." Father Flanagan thought the image and phrase captured the spirit of Boys Town, so he got permission and commissioned a statue of the drawing with the inscription, "He ain't heavy Father, he's my brother." The statue and phrase became the logo for Boys Town. The Two Brothers concept precedes the magazine illustration that Father Flanagan saw. In 1921, there was a resident at Boys Town who had difficulty walking. He wore leg braces and the other boys would often take turns giving him a ride on their backs. There is a famous photograph of this boy and one of the other youth giving him a ride. Now there are several statues of the Two Brothers on the Home Campus in Omaha; one is the sandstone of the two brothers from the illustration, another is a bronze version by an Italian artist that was commissioned in 1977. There is also a version done directly from the 1921 photograph in the Hall of History. >

The reason Allan Clarke's mouthing of the lyrics appears so relaxed and effortless in this rendition, is because he's actually miming, (as can be seen when he starts playing the harmonica while he still appears to be singing the words at the same time") 🤨

I think that there is a recorded track with the strings and possibly some other instruments being played while they performed live. Allen Clark mistakenly says filled with “sadness” instead of “gladness” at one point, and Bernie Calvert, who usually plays bass, is playing piano. He can play piano, though, so I am not sure if that is on the track with the strings. I heard that a young and then unknown Elton John played the piano for the actual recording of their record, but I am not positive it is true.
