This match, on 15 March 1987, was the final first class cricket match to be played at this venue after 105 years. The Tasmanian Cricket Association moved its headquarters to Bellerive Oval (Blundstone Arena) after this season. The Hobart Greyhound Racing Club vacated the ground in October 1980 and the Hobart Football Club played their final match there in August 1982, leaving only the North Hobart Cricket Club as its sole tenant, the stadium fell into a terrible state of disrepair during the 1990s as a result of fires, vandalism and neglect until it was renovated in 1999-2000 when Hobart Football Club resumed playing their matches there.
At his best he was a superb attacking batsman and certainly could've been a T20 dynamo today but Wayne Phillips should've been a mainstay for Australia in the 80's. Career killed by keeping for Aust which took a toll on his batting , then he criticised the selectors after being dropped and was never selected again - particularly galling in this season, while Australia got smashed by Gatting's team in the Ashes, Perth Cup Challenge and WSC, Phillips piled on 882 runs and hit 3 hundreds (inc one against English tourists). Bishop was seen as a real prospect at this time. Played a couple of ODI's in the Perth Challenge (Aust didn't win a game) and was disgarded. Never quite got the volume of runs to warrant an extended run in the national team and fulfill his considerable potential. A pity because he was a powerhouse on his day and could rip an attack apart, being particularly strong against touring teams. Mike Whitney was once asked which batsman gave him the biggest touch up of his career 'Viv Richards? Ian Botham?' the interviewer asked. 'No it was Glenn Bishop' Whitney answered 'He was a fantastic player' .
In an interview before the game hookes was told the crowd might be around 12,000. So he replied 'great 24,000 heads' a inbred joke. But he coped the boos from the crowd and the silence during his innings.
Astonishingly SA has won the 6 team one day competition just once in the following 35 years - in 2011/12. They have also won the Shield only once in last 40 yrs - 25 yrs ago !!

Wayne Phillips would have dominated in T20, incredible eye
So good to come across this and hear the commentary from my childhood. Was too young to remember this match but loved watching it.
Hard to believe Wayne Phillips was only an international player for 3 years
He should have stayed in the side as a batsman when Ian Healy took over as the keeper , but yes it is
Many thanks for the upload I can remember watching this game. Wayne Phillips was incredible to watch, even better than Hookesy at times.
Ah, the good old orange ball that was experimented with in domestic matches.
love these McDonalds cup matches! Could we please have some more?
