@@mthunzimhlongo660 that's understandable, however this movie was made in 1987, and it would not have been possible to get South African actors to play those parts at those times in part because of the Apartheid regime. They had to shoot most of the movie in Zimbabwe because they were not allowed to shoot it in South Africa. There was also no way that they would get funding to do the movie at the time without some name actors attached to it. They could probably do the movie now with South African actors now, but it simply would not have been possible to do that in 1987 and get a wide release like this movie did. This movie helped a lot of young people like me wake up and put pressure on our governments to act against the apartheid regime.

Hi I'm 60 do the math I was there...in time...aka the 80s and saw Peter Gabriel perform Biko after I'd seen Cry Freedom. I did not see Mr Biko rather Mr Gabriel. Please tell me how to make Peter Gabriels song BIko famous at last. Also I remember buying the LP Sun City by artists against Apartheid around that time. BTW Mr Mandela was still imprisoned at that time.

@@mundiakarue8849 It’s not about his heritage, clearly he is African but he is also American. The accent wasn’t good, but in my opinion it doesn’t take away from his beautiful performance. He’s a great actor and brought feeling and emotion to the role. He was perfectly cast.
why didn't South African's PRODUCE this movie instead of Hollywood??? Denzel has African roots, it is not like Tom Hanks played the role of Biko... take pride in Biko are you a South African? why couldn't you act as Biko? got BS?
liveni ndlovu I disagree this was a good performance by Denzel. That's why Richard Attenborough chose him for this role. When I saw Denzel in Cry Freedom, I knew we were watching a great actor in the making

Denzel’s nuance portrayal of this character is phenomenal. Something very few actors have achieved in the contemporary age of film making.

The film was shot in lobengula west Bulawayo , Zimbabwe during apertheid era in SA.1987 and some parts of Harare ( Highfield township)
