  • Lyrics:
A stranger lyin' on a barroom floor
Had drank so much, he could drink no more
And so he fell asleep with a troubled brain
To dream that he rode on a hellbound train
The engine was bloody, it was sweaty and damp
And brilliantly lit with a brimstone lamp
An imp for fuel was shovelin' bones
While a furnace rang with a thousand groans
The boiler was filled with lager beer
The devil himself was the engineer
The passengers were most a motley crew
Some were foreigners and others he knew
Rich men in broadcloth, beggars in rags
Handsome young ladies and wicked old hags
As the train rushed on at a terrible pace
Sulfuric fumes scorched their hands and face
Wider and wider the country grew
Faster and faster the engine flew
Louder and louder the thunder crashed
Brighter and brighter the lightnin' flashed
Hotter and hotter the air became
'Til the clothes were burnin' with each quivering flame
Then out of the distance, there came a yell
"Ha ha," said the devil, "We're nearin' hell"
Oh, how the passengers, stricken with pain
Begged old Satan to stop that train
The stranger awoke with an anguished cry
His clothes wet with sweat and his hair standin' high
He fell to his knees on the barroom floor
And prayed and prayed like never before
And the prayers and vows were not in vain
For he never rode that hellbound train
    Ha ha ha ha ha

The darkness mood that George gave to this song is impressive.

Best version of this song I've ever heard and on of my favorites from GT. He doesn't get the recognition he deserves.

This song has one of the best grooves! I haven't heard a song quite like it. The lyrics make me sad though. To George and to anyone else who has the mindset expressed in this song, you do not have to go to Hell. If you think you do, or you think that you are hopeless, you are spiritually blind, because you don't understand your own need of Christ and the hope you can have of eternal life when you die.
Nor do you understand what the Bible says about the terrible reality of hell. Let me be as clear as possible: There will be no parties in hell. In fact, the Bible indicates the opposite, for hell will be a place of absolute and total loneliness. In hell, a person will be cut off from others and from God forever. Hell, Jesus taught, will be a place of “outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth” (Matthew 25:30). Why would anyone want to go there?
The good news is that we don’t have to go there! The reason is that Jesus Christ died on the cross to take away our sins, and now He offers us salvation as a free gift. The Bible says, “The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work” (1 John 3:8).
I pray for you reading this,, that you will face your own need of God and open your heart and life to Jesus Christ.

As a poem or folk song it is said to have originated over a century ago as a cautionary tale about the perils of drink. The lyrics differ, notably concerning the "motley" passenger crew: ..."Catholics, Gentiles, atheists and Jews..."
      Fairly ecumenical.

The song maybe, but Chuck did not write the lyrics. It is poem, and the author said poem is unknown. Also a couple of verses were omitted in the song.

Track #10 of George Thorogoods album "Half a boy Half a Man", is "Hellbound Train (Downbound Train)". This song is basically a cover / rendition of Chuck Berry's song, "Downbound Train".
Not sure whats "LaUgH oUt LoUd" about that.
