First Winter Snow Storm | Living In A Van| Vanlife Europe
In this van life travel vlog, we get stuck in a snowstorm in Austria whilst living in the van with ‪@JitsIntoTheSunset‬ !Winter vanlife so far has been quite easy but this week we see the problems with van life when in sub-zero temperatures. We start the travel vlog with some of the top things to do in Austria. We visit the Dachstein Skywalk, Hallein Salt Mine and go sledding for the first time in Ramsau am Dachstein. Then the weather dropped to -18 and a blizzard came in leaving us snowed in until a snow plow came to the rescue!

Another tip - if it's going to snow overnight, leave your wipers up so they don't get crusted. That way when it's time to put them down and get wiping as you drive, the wipers will have uniform contact with the windscreen surface - very important for winter visibility!

You need to invest in some cans of de-icer and keep one with you if you go out for any length of time, no point having the cans in the van and you two frozen outside. Don't force any of the handles or most likely things will break. If you can park up on the flat I would leave the handbrake off too because sometimes this can freeze on. Just leave the van in gear. When I was your age I did several winters in Northern B.C. One Christmas it was minus 49 and the snow was frozen like rock. Great film, you're like the William and Kate (HRH) of independent travel!

I'm from Scotland and it's still childs play! We get that much snow several times every year! The first time I went to Austria(1984) we had 5m fell in a week. The Austrians piled it up at the side of the streets till it reached the shop roofs and created a cozy tunnel that you could walk along out of the snow and wind. Those cute alpine buildings are actually practical...

Canadians here! Today, in the center of Manitoba. Canada, it is -23 C, feels like -27 C with the wind chill. It is actually warming up.....lol. It has been very cold the last couple of weeks hitting -40 C with the wind chill a lot of days. We are used to it, complain, but it doesn't get us anywhere. I just count the days till spring! While we are not winter lovers, we do love a beautiful snowfall, and the beauty it brings, so we can still appreciate it. It was nice to see your excitement, and see it through fresh eyes. Seeing & hearing the absolute joy in Emma sliding down that hill was PRICELESS! Not sure we would be brave enough to do it in a van, so good for you guys! Loved the video!

I'm in Minnesota, USA. That is a wet snow that hovers around freezing. Turns to ice when the temp drops. I actually feel warmer when the temp drops to where the snow stays frozen, and I'm insulated. It's that wet cold that seeps into every pore. So, you can't really compare that to the extreme cold, which is its own beast.

The trick to thaw a frozen lock is to pee on it or pee on the key to warm it, easier for Alex than Emma. A bigger problem is the door freezing to the door seal, it will tear it if forced open. Wiping it over with Vaseline or Glycerine stops it from freezing stuck. Did neither of you toboggan down a hill on a tea tray as kids?

another Canadian here. We just finished having 2 weeks of -30c. On the positive, its always sunny at that temp. At -30, you get exhaust fog when a group of cars all start from a stop at the same time. And frozen flat spots on your tires.
Read your instructions about the chains. Most come with a speed restriction.
Lock deicer .. kept on your person. A bottle stored in the glove box does not help when you are outside. A quick hack .. use a lighter on the key, warm it up then put it in quickly. A frozen lock means there is moisture in it. So a warm key may melt it, at some point you will need a lock deicer to disperse the moisture.
    Safe travels.

Thank you for making a big deal of the snow. I'm from Australia so you very much expressed how I'd feel if I was there. Only really experienced snow when I lived in South Korea but kept falling over in it (and the ice) all the time (on sidewalks / footpaths I mean). You're so right, it's great for 5 minutes (or in the comfort of your home looking out a window) but walking in it - totally different story.

I 2nd/3rd the lock deicer. In a county with that much snow I'd expect to find it in any gas station. If it gets REALLY cold (-25 maybe), fuel line de-icer/antifreeze. A must in my 80s VW in Northern Ontario. Lastly, a compact snow shovel. That would have gotten you out of that park up pronto. Snow can be fun, unless you're in a hurry.

I went to a salt mine whilst staying in Berchestesgaden in southern Germany. Not automated like yours, but to drop down into the depths meant sitting on sleds and sliding down icey slopes. To get back to surface meant climbing many stairs. You can't beat seeing so many mountains and wonderful scenery in Austria, Switzerland and Bavaria. I went to see the Eagles Nest, Hitler's hide out perched on the top of a mountain. Access was thankfully by an elevator to a restaurant perched high up with magnificent views.

Childhood memories of cars and snow: Lots of swearing from my dad, while my mother sat still and refused to get out of the car stuck in snow 😅
I think the combination of heavy snow and heavy winds creates the most surprises. I have found my car covered in snow after a day of mountain skiing once. We only spotted the front windshield. Driving in 10-20 cm of fresh snow I have done several times. But older cars were more suited to that. 70 and 80ies cars. Volvos, Mazdas, Toyotas, Chevrolets and a Buick. Modern cars are all low riders and get bogged down.

You need to buy a roll of bubblewrap for your windows inside. Cut it to size, spray glass with water which will hold the bubblwrap on. It will save heat loss and freezing water on the inside... no condensation on glass normal winter weather... very cheap . haven't tested it in -18 but it's worth a test try on one window.

I have to say, props to you for driving "on the Continent" (as I once heard it described by one of our UK friends). I've driven on both sides, but each time with the corresponding proper placement of the steering wheel. When we lived in The Netherlands, there was a temptation to take our car across to the UK, but I couldn't quite get my head around being way over on the "wrong" side. Well, "wrong" from the point of view of where our steering wheel was. Carry on!

When you get a chance (warmer area) use WD40 in the door locks. You’ll need to use light oil after the WD but should help prevent locks freezing up.
Vaseline on door seals will help prevent them sticking

I love snow. It's when it is -49 C that winter is not fun (yes, I'm Canadian and that was the temperature yesterday). And that was not a blizzard - your van was not covered in 5 feet of snow ;) But it is so cute, watching you experience real winter and snow for the first time. We don't get that wet snow - ours is drier/powder snow. It only looks like that in the spring. You also need to try snow tubing as those sleds were cute but lacked any real speed. Insider secret: none of us can control or steer a sled - you just get on and go! Have fun

I am. scottish and have had my fair share of very hard winter weather. We had years Back a foot of snow. Power cuts
Had to put teacher up for the night from our highschool ,shopping done by sleigh as roads were totally blocked
But we had so much fun like with sledding down the hills beside us .
Heating pan of bake beans in the ashes of our fire at home ,making toast ( power was out for quite a few days ) .
But living in Europe now i seen some snow very heavy ,and the different affects it brings to live in general .
We had - 23 few years back We were the coldest place in the country that night 🤦‍♀️. my oldest son did the morning papers its was crazy .
Brilliant video really enjoyed your min Road trip with jilts 🥰

This video made us both smile so much! So much child-like joy which is amazing to see. Even being from Virginia (USA) I feel like I was used to much more snow but it's q lot nicer when you get as much as you did and it's easily plowed! Everything would shut down for 2 days until roads could be properly cleared! About a week before our wedding in mid-March it dumped 50+ cm and our car was under 1 meter of snow due to the snow plows 😂 We can laugh now, but it left us a bit on edge then. Safe travels, you two! 🤗

I like to think I'd enjoy that much snow and cold but I think I'm lying to myself. I enjoy watching other people brave it though.

Another great video, so fun! I like being able to go to the snow, not have the snow come to me - drive up into the mountains and spend the day playing in it then drive back down to warm weather :) Stay safe out there!

Back in the 90s I did a cicle the Baltic expedition in a 1971 Range Rover, self conatined but with a blocked heater matrix. One night I slept on the Finnish/Russian border in -35c with no heater. My sub-zero Everest bag kept me alive...diesel heater what a bunch of whimps..LOL

Being a hardy Ontarian, I can honestly say this is nothing comparatively speaking, just everyday life in Canada in the winter but watching you beans experience it is pretty funny. Get yourself a can of lock de icer and some thermal window coverings. It currently -33 today!

The trees are absolutely beautiful with all the snow on them! from NYC here in the states and have had a few 20+ inch snow storms/blizzards and it's so pretty but like Alex said it gets mushy and pretty nasty quick living here in the city.

I absolutely LOVE this video of yours, it was so much fun to watch you and Jits, especially the sledding scenes! I'm also liking all the tips in the comments section on how to deal with frozen locks, etc. My husband and I have lived in mild climate areas all our lives and will be moving to an area that actually gets some snow. We've both driven a little in the snow before on vacations, but hardly at all and definitely not as much as you all experienced! One thing that I would recommend though that we bought that has helped for times when our windows get iced over is getting a proper window scraper. Not the kind you have which is really meant for water and condensation, but an actual hard plastic scraper.

You guys do live in a country where you get weather like this in winter, its called Scotland, anyone from South of Manchester cannot believe we get very cold, very snowy weather up here in Scotland, not just for a day or so, but weeks on end. Come up in the winter (but buy some snow chains for the highlands) and enjoy the beautiful scenery. D

normal coolant antifrezze, best applied with a syringe from a pharmacie into the lock is the best against freezing them up. It can also be used to rub down the rubber seals around doors and windows, preventing those from freezing on the opposite frame or the glass and breaking.

Reminds me of my childhood when we had great snow in winter or the time I spend in Switzerland. I was in Austria and Italy in the Alps many times but not in winter. Yes, I love snow, don't get any here in Cork, Ireland. too bad. Have to travel again. I love snow, not skiing, but sledge riding.

Having had the issue of frozen locks old trick heat key up (mind you don't get close to the plastic top) and try it in lock gently turn the key back and forth once free spray WD-40 in DO NOT ATTEMPT TOO FORCE THE LOCK OR YOU COULD SNAP THE KEY once you have the door open spray the door rubber's with WD-40 silicon oil.
Under no circumstances force locks or doors.
